We just passed our local vicar who was visiting parishioners with Mothering Sunday posies.
DH lost his mother a week ago and so we are not really celebrating.
((hugs)) to all.

dogsmother Sun 11-Mar-18 12:44:03

We all think of our own mothers too.?

FlorenceFlower Sun 11-Mar-18 13:11:20

Sorry, posted my message too soon. It should have read: Flowers for everyone, hope that everyone’s day turns out as well as possible, so very sad when family members die, lose contact or are unhappy. Missing my own mother tremendously today. ?

grammargran Sun 11-Mar-18 13:18:03

Mothering Sunday is a much sweeter, gentler name than Mother’s Day which just reeks of commercialism to me. Mothering Sunday just reminds me of posies. Can we have a campaign to get it back?

Greyduster Sun 11-Mar-18 13:18:06

My grandson has a school friend who lost his father a few weeks ago. My SiL was taking them to a football match yesterday when the subject of Mother’s Day came up and the boy said that his father had always helped him and his brother to sort out cards and presents but of course, given the circumstances it had gone by the board this year. So after the match my SiL took him to get a card and a present for him and his brother to give to their mother. I want to cry every time I think about it.

Reading these posts makes me realise I should count my blessings more often. Greyduster, such a sad story but what a caring SiL you have. ?

kittylester Sun 11-Mar-18 13:37:39

Exactly what Jane43 said. It made me weepy too gd.

My lovely sil has just been out and bought DD'S best friend some flowers because her Dh said, 'shes not my mother' their children are 7 and 5.

NonnaW Sun 11-Mar-18 13:55:52

My son posted on fb this morning ‘happy mother’s day to all mothers and mother figures’ which I thought was lovely of him.

Rosina Sun 11-Mar-18 14:01:30

Peace and happiness today to all mothers and to all who have sadness for whatever reason. x

Mauriherb Sun 11-Mar-18 14:54:16

This is my first mothering Sunday as a gran but also my first without my own mum, so mixed emotions here. My heart goes out to those who have lost their daughters xx

flowers for those of you who find this a difficult day.

marylane1996 Sun 11-Mar-18 15:06:20

I have been hard at work cleaning my apartment from 8 this morning not because I love the task but to completely exhaust myself as yet again after 4 years no phone call, text from my two daughters whom I brought up single handedly since their dad died when they were 3 years and 4 months respectedly. I certainly don't want greatful thanks that was my job but it was lonely as all other relatives had gone and here I am lonely still as they don't bother with me. I have tried everything possible to find out why they hate me, their words sadly, but they want no contact. I have got through the day though and about to collapse with a coffee. I can never understand this situation but thank you to all of you who have sent kind wishes.

Kerenhappuch Sun 11-Mar-18 15:07:08

Sending love to all who are sad today.

Some lovely stories of kindness and help on here as well, which have cheered me up.

I've had a phone call from each of my grown-up sons apologising for not sending a card! Because, reasons! grin

For some reason it's hit me harder this year than any year since my mum died in 2009. I've been having counselling for anxiety and depression, and talking about my mum quite a lot, that might be why. Also my mum in law, who lived near us, died in 2016, and for some reason her not being around has really hit me this year - I am out of 'mother figures' in my life!

Chimaera Sun 11-Mar-18 15:26:46

My 2 daughters saw fit to cut me out of their lives 10 years ago - I remarried and they didn't approve. I have 2 grandchildren I will never see too. I'm not a huge fan of mother's day! I bought them up single handed after their father decided that family life wasn't for him (he was having an affair). Oh well!

Lovely post for all of us who have lost touch with our children and who no longer have mother's of their own ...... seize the day with fond memories flowers

Saggi Sun 11-Mar-18 16:34:19

MY SIL turned up few hours ago with a lovely bunch of flowers ...saying I’m the only ‘mum’ he’s got now...hie died just after he married my daughter.I love him for that! Then my son turned up with flowers and a saucy card AND an expensive bottle of wine ( which I know he can’t really afford). Me and him drunk the wine...ate the lunch I’d scrabbled together...and had the biggest laugh when he tried to cut into a roast spud as it shot across the table and into the snug!!! My daughter was with HER children but sent best wishes.I forgive her as Mother’s Day this year is also her birthday!! I’ve got a mild hangover now but well worth it.

Marylane1996 I am so sorry for you. I do not understand how flesh and blood can be so cruel. You only have one mum. I feel very lucky today. Although I lost my daughter last April we did celebrate Mothers day together with her children by her hospital bedside. She even bought me a heart necklace with Nan written across it. I have three other children who each have sent me a card with lovely words inside today and also gifts and one of them have invited me to lunch although I have had to decline as I have flu and do not want to spread my germs to her family. I was very emotional this morning and I put up a previous Mother's day card that my daughter had sent to me, its silly I know but somehow comforting. I cannot bring myself to say god bless all mums as I do not believe in god but I do wish every mum a happy day and feel for all those who have lost their mum whatever the circumstances. I also feel so bad for my grandchildren who have lost their mum and I am not able to comfort them. I hope their dad is doing a good job today. flowers

Barmeyoldbat Sun 11-Mar-18 16:56:11

Met with my daughter today for lunch and took her some flowers as she will never be able to bea mother. The cat is her child! Son left a message before going into work saying Happy Mothers Day from your little soldier, as I call him, so I am happy despite no cards. So sorry for all those who experience pain on Mothering Sunday. flowers

KatyK Sun 11-Mar-18 18:18:49

Some awful situations here. Sending good wishes to all who are struggling today. flowers I will consider myself lucky that my DD and DGD came today with a lovely gift and cards. I am grateful. My own mum died many years ago when I was 23 and my younger sister was only 14 at the time.

nanaK54 Sun 11-Mar-18 18:26:26
