I'm feeling guilty

My mil and I have never had a good relationship. I've always found her mean and very passive aggressive and full of moans. She never warmed to the children, I had to remind her of their birthdays etc. She lives about a half hour away from us and over the years I've been making excuses not to go see her when my husband does. Last week she was taken to hospital after a fall. She's frail and when I went to visit her she went on and on about what a lovely woman I was and how much I've done for her son. It's completely out of character and now I feel terrible. sad

Just a thought minimo.... a leopard really doesn't change their spots..... maybe she's after living with you!!??

I believe she’s speaking from her heart. As mother, we all want our children to be safe and happy. She must realise that you make her son happy! So be loving to her as one day, it’ll be your turn to be a mil.

Oh minimo ! Please do not feel guilty. Just enjoy the good weather while it lasts! I had it with my Granny. At home she was very unkind to me and said nasty things about me and my father. Then in hospital, she was telling everyone how clever I was and all the things I did for her etc. (I was still at school, she was my mother's mother.) Once back home she was nasty again. I think when people were around she was playing to the gallery.

However, I think in your case things might be different. Your MIL may have realised how good you are, now she is not so strong. Who knows? Being old is strange. I'd like to think that she is trying to say sorry, she did always know you are a good person. Maybe she was jealous because she had lost her son to you? Whatever it is, just enjoy the good times and don't feel guilty!!

Ditch the guilt! We can all only do our best.

MIL has obviously just cottoned on to your worth - bask in the glory - it may not last!!

Try to accept that mil's can be a wife's worst enemy. Having said that, I would continue the pleasantries so long as they're reciprocated so you don't feel guilty once she's no longer there.

Perhaps she was jealous of you "taking her son away!"

My wife had an Uncle whom she was always scared of as a child. I saw a different side and told my wife. She did get the chance to see I was right and was pleased. Unfortunately, he passed away shortly after.

You have the chance to make up for those lost years! Take it! Don't mull over the lost years but embrace the time you have!
