I seem to remember many people having a nickname when I was wee, but hardly anyone seems to have one nowadays. Some I remember hearing about were;

The Exorcist (because when he came to your house, all the spirits disappeared)

Vimto ( because nobody liked him)

Two Soups ( because his name was Campbell Baxter)

They seem to have vanished now, probably not PC or something.
Nobby Clark, Dusty Rhodes , Chalky White etc

Wingnut - because that was the shape of his head and ears.

We have a friend called Peanut because of the shape of his head, very narrow when you face him but long front to back when viewed from side. Another friend, died a couple years ago, was Nobby Clark.
Know a Whacker, real name Ernest, no idea where his nickname comes from though.

My oldest son is known by all in his circle as Jungle so I am known as Jungle’s mum.

My second son invented his own nicknames and for a while I answered telephone calls for someone called Stag! Then he left home and reinvented himself once more (he was an aspiring rock musician of course) and he came Cain. Very odd to meet a new girlfriend and her mum and hear them talking about this character called ‘Cain’ ... then the penny dropped! When we had to dash to the A&E in a London hospital it took me several attempts to discover which of his names had been used to admit him - I had no idea what name his companions knew him by. In the end it didn’t matter. At his funeral you could tell how all this strangers knew him by which name they called him by. All very surreal!

My Dad was called Split pin as a boy. He had long legs and a round head!??

MissAdventure Fri 02-Feb-18 19:04:16

Things weren't very pc in those days. My dads friend had nicknames for everyone in our family. My sister was egg on legs. (Plump) I was mouth on a stick (skinny)

Someone we know is referred to as "Ariston" because he goes on, and on, and on and on

Anyone remember the advert?

MissAdventure Fri 02-Feb-18 19:18:28

I remember someone referring to a 'bloke' where he worked as stinky. When I asked why, he said "cos he stinks!"

BBbevan Fri 02-Feb-18 19:25:35

My dad was a postman and had nicknames for several people on his round. One poor woman was referred to as Bogside because she was Irish. We have names for the neighbours, - Afghan (he looks like his dog, long and lanky), Hairy Nose (no explanation needed) and his wife, Mrs Busy (always walking at top speed with an empty shopping bag on her arm. Maybe it's an inherited trait because both our son and daughter have nicknames for their friends.

Just remembered - my school friend's uncle never looked where he was walking - nickname Trod-in-it.

My children called one of our neighbours Mrs Clock, because she walked down the road at exactly the same time each morning, and when they saw her they knew it was time for them to set off for school.

Marydoll Fri 02-Feb-18 21:47:15

We have a neighbour, called "Pitbull" by all the other neighbours.

Marydoll Fri 02-Feb-18 21:47:51

...and it's not because he has a dog.

grannyqueenie Fri 02-Feb-18 22:16:40

My dad often called me Molly, I’ve no idea why. He had nicknames for various neighbours too, e.g. “The Stornaway Gazette”, a woman who came from the Western Isles, there was nothing she liked better than to pass on a bit of neighbourhood gossip!
