I was bullied at work in my 60s and have decided never to let it happen again. As a 'little old lady' I doubt anyone would be violent towards me so will stand my ground.
A while ago I was at an event with small children. A demonstration was being prepared which I thought would interest them but there was no room so I asked a very tall man if they could go in front of him. I did not suggest that I did too. He became very annoyed and said they should have asked themselves to which I responded that I had asked for them. By this time they were in front of him. He then said that I should have taught them to ask themselves which surprised me as it must have been obvious I was too old to be their mother. I explained why it was not my place to teach them and he called me "an arrogant white woman". I responded with "If I had called you an arrogant black man you would have accused me of being racist". He said "I am black and that gives me power" which I found shocking.
The whole time DH was trying to pull me away and the woman with the man was cowering from him. Every time he turned to me he bashed the child with him with his backpack. The demonstration started so no more was said.
DH and I discussed this this morning and he still thinks I should have backed off. I still think I should have stood my ground. What do you think?
