brunswick, what a great birthday 1.1.11 is! We were hoping for 12.12.12 or 20.12.2012 for our DGS, but he arrived in between them.
I need advice for a mutually messy situation

Hello , I'm 60 next week and I'm dreading it . Have always disliked my birthday . But this one is hitting me hard . It is not just the being 60 and feeling old .
As my birthday is so close to Christmas it's mostly a disappointment for 1 reason or another .
My daughters and I were going to Dublin for the weekend but 1 pulled out then it was decided we'd do it another time . But that's The crux of my birthday , celebrating is put off as everyone busy so plans are put on hold and then never happen . Any suggestions for over coming my hang ups most grateful received . X

Have a great birthday, OP, whichever day it is! Plenty of
and treats, even if you get them for yourself! Birthdays around Christmas often fall a bit flat (I've got one myself, as had my DF and now my DGS1), but we've to make the most of them, and spoil ourselves if nobody else has the time or cash to do it for us. As for getting older, it's a privilege, as others have said. I hope you are one of the lucky ones who get a bus pass. I would have been delighted to have that as my 60th birthday present.
It's a shame about your Dublin trip - some posters have read it wrongly and think that you have dropped out, but I see it's one of your daughters (it's a 1 in the OP, not I) and that must have been a huge disappointment. Probably the reason you feel so down, and you must make sure it goes ahead in the New Year.
Fingers firmly crossed for the pension debate today - go WASPIS!!!
When you are in your 80's and 90's 60 will seem very young. In fact it is a marvellous age to be!
You know what they say about birthdays? They’re good for you - the more you have, the longer you live
Seriously, being 60 is no biggie. And like others, I don’t understand why you’re upset about the Dublin trip given that you said in your original post that it was you who pulled out

Although bus passes for most areas are now in line with the state pension age, as with most things, there are exceptions.
Residents in London (in the Oystercard area, I'm not sure where exactly) and Merseyside still get local travel passes at the age of sixty!
Although we are geographically in Cheshire, our postcode falls within the Merseyside boundary, so we both got our passes on our 60th birthdays this year
I had my 60th first week in November. I wasn’t dreading it at all. So much going on in life..it’s just another birthday.
I started planning mine and had booked things up to do with and without family in January. So ruddy organised am I. We celebrated right through November. And now here we In December with a move on the horizon on 18th !!!
Please don’t Dread your 60th.....life’s for living . Embrace it all
Yes Jackie the question of delayed women's pensions is coming up in Parliaament 14th Dec. Write to your MP NOW-don't forget your address-nothing will happen if we don't keep up the pressure!
Then we can enjoy our 60s again. . . . ,
As a kid I always loved my December birthday (2nd). It always seemed special. But since all the family grew up and started having kids /grandkids it's not so unusual. Three... count them 3 kids in family born on Christmas Day .... and when my granddaughter was due 5 years ago... you guessed it ..she was due Christmas Day . My daughter couldn't stand that as her daughter's birthday for one particular reason. Her favourite cousin who she adored was one of those born on 25th... and then 29 years later died on HER birthday! we don't much celebrate birthdays now especially my daughter.None of us are fussed about getting older ( only my husband) ,we all try to stuff as much into life as possible ...we get ill... but then we get better, or put up with it.Age doesn't register with us. So Nanano.. have your birthday.. celebrate or don't ...it's up to you...but take time to look about your family and be thankful you've got them. Happy birthday Nanano.
If you are agile enough join a really energetic group, e.g. Morris Dancers.
From that you will gain exercise, fun and friendship, plus a real sense of achievement when you survive to attend the next session! You won't have time for concerns about your own birthday after that.
Check out WASPI everyone

Have a friend who has birthday in December. She emigrated to NZ. Now has summer birthday and loves it. Suggest you do the same. Nominate a day in summer and then sort out a fun plan with family and or friends. No numbers of the actual birth date needed!
I was 60 this year and I loved it. Did lots of celebrating with friends and family.
I have a lot of friends & family who have December/January Birthdays, not a lot of fun, one friend's Birthday was Christmas Day, she was 40 before she celebrated her Birthday properly.
I was widowed at 57 so for my 60th (July) my DD, her OH & DGS took me out for Lunch & generally spoilt me.
I don't get my State Pension until I'm 66, no Bus Pass until then, if you're still working you pay NI until you're 66. Good things are Senior RailCard, free Prescriptions, free Eye Tests, also you may qualify for other Senior/Pensioner Discounts.
60 isn't a big Birthday now as women have to work longer.
Definitely book a nice treat for after Christmas
Nina no, which day next week is it? Let's have proper birthday for you on Gransnet!
FGS, 60 is barely past middle age! Get a grip.
As you get older, you can celebrate your birthday as proof that you've managed to survive another year. I don't suppose I thought that way at 60, but 17 years later, I certainly do.
Wont deny .60 is a blooming horrible milestone ... I was nigh on suicidal ..didnt celebrate as others( younger!) wanted me to . Now I am 62 and finally over the negative feelings I had and now I just concentrate on my positive attributes. Look after yourself...the rest is in the lap,of the gods .. bugger all we can do about getting old but as a woman its doubly tough in my view. .
Can't understand it really. Dont' you know that 60 is the new 50! I'm 65 and my birthday is right on top of Christmas, it has never bothered me. I don't think about the number and therefore do not think "old". Feeling old has a lot to do with your lifestyle...make some changes if you feel this way.
Its brilliant being 60, (I've gone past that point now). Freedom Pass, lots of other perks. my daughter;s birthday is 20th December, ( I iwas in hospital with her over Xmas) my grandson is 1st January and his birth date is 1.1.11 and my son is 6th January and then I follow on with 10th February.
I feel your pain i turned sixty last June and I dreaded the day I had a very small get together with my grown up children after work and that was it i haven't told any of my work colleagues as a big fuss is made of special birthdays I work in a school however i now feel the build up was worse than the actual birthday and on the plus side I got cheap theatre tickets and when I feel really fed up of I remind myself some don't even make it to sixty so I feel very grateful
I too used to dread 60. but it came and about a month before I had a brainwave. I said to DH 'How about your give me a surprise 60th" We were living in NZ so we sent out invites to all my close women friends and hired a cafe in a beautiful garden not far from home. Over 30 people came, we had sandwiches, drinks, laughed, reminisced, and at the end we all went home to our tiny place for coffee. It was a wonderful experience. Yes, I had to remind DH and tell him what to do and how to do it, but that is the way things work between us. We returned to UK, got our bus passes, have made more friends, and are enjoying life. The only downside is we are not allowed to see our grandchildren. But even that can be coped with! Good luck to you. Try something like U3A if there is one in your area. It's been good for us! Take care!
As we have so many Dec/Jan birthdays, and are scattered, we have a 'family birthday' in the summer, with picnic and / or barbecue.
My mother used to say 'count your age in friends not years' and she made many lovely friends, of all ages throughout her life. She died though before most of her friends, so didn't have to watch the count go down.
I would say forget everything else, book in for a massage, manicure hair do ,which ever is your favourite, get a bottle of bubbly, a take away, chocolate, favourite film or music etc , what's the alternative ? a duvet day!!! No do what ever it is that floats your boat, best wishes .
My birthday is 27th December though as a child I thought it was 27th February, as that is what my parents told me. Two of my children have Christmas birthdays as well, eldest son on 24th and daughter on 28th. One of my grandsons is 1st January and anothet son on 10th Jan. We don't run one into the other and always celebrate them all to some extent. A couple of years ago when I was 80 they sprung a lovely surprise party on me. I was asked for tea at my daughter's and she was going to invite the others. I was told that some of them couldn't make it which didn't particularly disappoint me as I don't let thimgs like that upset me. Anyway, my grandson picked me up and took a phome call in the car from his mum , supposedly saying that unfortunately his uncle and family couldn't come but would he call in their house on the way back. We duly arrived and my DGS suggested I went in for,a few minutes. I had quite a shock when I went in and saw all the family there, a lovely spread laid on and a great birthday cake made by my lovely daughter. They all know that if possible I like to celebrate occasions with the family rather than loads of friends.
My mom always said that Old age was a gift denied to many so we should be grateful for it. Following her advice I'm just grateful to still be having a birthday. The only big one I struggled with was 30 - no idea why. You'll more than likely wake up the next day feeling no different to when you were a mere 59
