Have a secret life on Gransnet?
Do you all share with your partner and family all the things that happen here?
My H would no longer understand but even when he did he wouldn't have been interested and would not have understood the concept of talking to strangers and then just how involved we become in each other's lives.
I could not share with him all the sadness that is happening on here and I find that very hard for me as I long to share to help me with my feelings for my virtual friends.
I think he has become withdrawn but I now realise he has never been a sharing person.

No, they wouldn't be interested for the most part.

Willow500 Fri 10-Nov-17 09:02:36

My husband has no interest in social media of any kind so doesn't really take any notice but I do tell him some things that have come up in discussions or show him videos on FB. It's not really secret more like apathy on his part grin

I do share a lot of my Gransnet life with my DH and he has even asked me how various people are getting on or what was the conclusion about a particular thread. I don't share with anyone else as I don't think they would either be interested or as annsixty said wouldn't understand. My sister has a huge friendship group (how lucky) whereas I have no friends in real life. I feel great comfort knowing that I can talk over many problems with some lovely people on GN who understand.

Marydoll Fri 10-Nov-17 09:06:36

My DH doesn't know much about it. He does know I have a few GN friends and also that I play the games, as I often burst out laughing at some of the posts. I have mentioned the sadness and pain on here recently , as it has affected me.
Apart from that, he is not in the least bit interested.

Dh knows and shows some interest in happenings but I don't talk about gn to anyone else except in a general way.

Ann you know you can offload on here - maybe counter productive! Or pm one of us. I'm happy to 'listen'.

harrigran Fri 10-Nov-17 09:15:22

DH knows about GN and I tell him about certain threads and we laugh together over some of the funny things that have been recounted.

Teetime Fri 10-Nov-17 09:19:30

I tell him some of the general points he's not really interested and I'm on here less and less anyway.

Chewbacca Fri 10-Nov-17 09:20:49

I tell no one that I'm on GN. I make sure that I completely close down this site when I put my laptop down, so that OH doesn't know what I've been doing. I haven't told my RL friends or family that I come here either. This is my retreat!

DanniRae Fri 10-Nov-17 09:21:20

I am always talking to my husband and family about things on Gransnet. If I am sitting with my husband and I burst out laughing at something on here he will want to know what has made me laugh. Or sometimes I ask him for help with one of the games I am playing - he is very good at it too. I also find myself quoting something I have read on here when with my family! Gransnet is now a big part of my life and it would be weird for me not to share it with the people in my life................I don't let them know what my Gransnet name is however (and it is nothing like my real name!!)

Marydoll Fri 10-Nov-17 09:24:41

I meant to say, none of my family or friends know I'm on it and I don't want them to know. Just like Chewy, this my private retreat.

annsixty Fri 10-Nov-17 09:26:11

It is a huge part of my life too

I would be lost without it.

paddyann Fri 10-Nov-17 10:16:53

Like some others no one knows I'm on here ,I wouldn't have told about some of the things I have if people who knew me could access it.Its the anonimity of strangers that offers me the space to discuss things I wouldn't with friends or family

merlotgran Fri 10-Nov-17 10:24:17

I often tell DH what's occurin' on GN and he likes to give me his opinion, especially when it's a ding dong discussion about something that interests him.

Whenever there's a thread about environmental or farming issues I sometimes consult him before posting although I will often say, 'Blimey, I'm not telling 'em that. I'll get lynched!' grin

cornergran Fri 10-Nov-17 10:32:14

Mr C knows. I get a sort of bemused look. He is aware of recent sad news but I dont think understands the links that form in this virtual world. It’s a bit like my career choice was, he will defend my right to do it while acknowledging he doesn’t understand ‘why’. I haven’t told the wider family or RL friends. It’s like keeping work and home separate, always my preference.

humptydumpty Fri 10-Nov-17 11:15:10

I feel this reflects what seems to be the general difference, that men don't really seem to have friend groups in the same way as women, in RL or VL.

Moocow Fri 10-Nov-17 11:18:49

All who are interested know if they remember is another matter! It has always just come up in general conversation.

JackyB Fri 10-Nov-17 12:02:33

Like Moocow, I mention it if a subject that has been discussed here comes up in general conversation. My DS all get the concept, and I have no compunction bringing it up with DiLs and friends.

Nonnie Fri 10-Nov-17 12:33:40

DH knows I am on here and thinks we talk about our GC all the time. I do occasionally talk to him about a thread but not often, but then he never talks to me about the football threads he is on. Now why would that be? Oh yes, I know nothing about football!

Bathsheba Fri 10-Nov-17 13:22:41

My DH knows I'm on it. At least he knows I used to be on it, but he doesn't know I've signed up again. I often tell him about different threads on here, but I would never tell him my username in case he took it into his head to have a look round!!
I have never told any of my wider family or friends in RL that I'm on GN - I would hate it if one/some of them were also members and asked who I was on here shock. I prefer to keep this part of my life separate from RL, as many others have said.

ninathenana Fri 10-Nov-17 13:33:20

He knows and I will sometimes talk to him about a thread but as someone else said about her DH he has no interest in social media, and wouldn't have a clue how to look. D also knows and could probably ID me but she has no interest in looking. I haven't posted anything I wouldn't want her to see anyway.

Menopaws Fri 10-Nov-17 14:18:14

I'm with chewy and Marydoll, it's my place, my time, my thought and my friends, no one else knows and that's how I like it, there's very little that's my own these days but GN is my own thing

lemongrove Fri 10-Nov-17 14:54:10

I sometimes read out choice comments (!) to DH and we laugh, ‘it would take a heart of stone not to laugh at some of them,’ to paraphrase Oscar Wilde.
He also enjoys hearing about tasty recipes, as do I.
I have encouraged one or two friends to join, but they say they already have forums and that GN sounds a ‘bit old’.Fie to that.

lemongrove Fri 10-Nov-17 14:55:55

We have more humour generally than Mumsnet I think.

kittylester Fri 10-Nov-17 15:41:00

I agree - but I do wonder why.
