I’ll post then run for the hills ???

Just reading through threads this morning and left asking ‘is it me?’

An example, someone comes up with an idea they are really keen on and at least half the posters rain on their parade. Or someone is asking for advice and off some of us go just talking about ourselves and ignoring the OP’s request. Reminds me of those ‘friends’ (ex-friends) who monopolise the conversation.

Then there’s those who seem to think you and on the downward side of the hill after you hit 70 and are getting rid of ‘stuff’ from their lives, presumably in expectation of shuffling off this mortal coil in the not too distance future. Now I’m not a hoarder by any means and anything that wasn’t beautiful, useful or had sentimental value was ditched along the way even when I was young. So what is their point now?

Then there’s the old sparring partners who’ve been getting digs (and sometimes ‘slings and arrows’) at a particular poster who they fell out with in 1066 and seem to live for the chance to twist the knife.

And of course, extremely irritating, those who don’t read the thread and other posts and say exactly what I’ve just said as if they had just had the most amazing idea. And even more irritating those who comment on that post ‘that’s a great idea why didn’t someone else think if thst?’ (they did - me ?) making it a double whammy. Grrrr...

Then, there those with a listening ear, a bit of common sense and, above all, logic ....thank god.

We went out to dinner last night with old friends. Friends who were in a pop band, rode Vespas and rebelled. I was a rocker, leather jacket an’ all. But we spent half the night comparing our ills and operations and the other half being in the right. Until the witching hour approached, then the booze kicked in, numbed our aches and pains and we got silly. We are still here, underneath, mini skirts an all, but life and cares can get in the way.

(I’m guilty of not reading all through the threads, cos I cant keep up. I think some are on GN all day)

Be nice to have enough hair to straighten!

Morgana Wed 08-Nov-17 19:21:54

Re being survivors of the sixties: I often wonder how we have allowed the world to become such a mess when we had such high hopes. But heaven forfend I should way lay this thread!

Bluegal Wed 08-Nov-17 19:25:15

Pmsl. Loopyloo did you iron your hair? I always had long straight blond hair and my classmates were so envious they used to actually iron their’s on an ironing board with brown paper!! Thank G for straighteners eh?

I had 4 daughters and 2 stepsons and I told them there
Was NOTHING they could do that I hadn’t (as a seventies teenager). It was true! Was always one step ahead of my children and thankfully they weren’t like me lol.

I don’t forget it all either! Loved my life then and love it now! Just need to accept my limitations. But I speak out more now
When I get bad service or see anyone behaving anti socially I say so!

I went for my last official mammogram today, so as far as the Health Service is concerned I'm too old/not worth bothering with any more. Well, bugger them, 70 is the new 50! I'm not de-cluttering either, because when I win the lottery I'm going to buy a penthouse with a sea view, furnish it with a bed, a table, two chairs and a very comfy sofa, and have the best of both worlds; a minimalist flat to sleep and eat in, and my tip of a house to play in. grin

If I come across posts by the grumps and bickerers I just scroll on by, I don't feel the need to react unless I'm feeling grumpy too.

As for black-catters I do sometimes feel tempted to ask what makes some people think that their grandchildren have got bigger heads than other people's grandchildren...

I still struggle to straighten mine loopyloo - although it is short now!
I always had 'difficult' hair and I moaned about it then and moan about it now grin and I hope I can still keep it and carry on moaning about it.

Chewbacca Wed 08-Nov-17 20:27:49

I used to spray my hair silver, back in the 70s. Don't need to do that anymore! sadly

NanKate Wed 08-Nov-17 20:37:58

I was a rocker in the 1960s with a purple streak in my hair. I'm still an old rocker now in my early 70s and always say yes when my 6 year old GS says 'Do you want to boogie in the bedroom Nan ?'

I'm equally at home with Jerry Lee, Chuck, Sheeran and Ariana.

I must admit I now go to bed about 4 hours earlier than I used to as a groovy chick but there is still a bit of fun left in me.

Rock On. ?

So true Anya but in my experience of senior forums generally, gransnet is not the only one by a long shot sadly, that fits your description ..it's such a pity.

Sure we are all older, sure we do need to exchange experiences due to age etc, good and bad, but yes, I get very sad watching the infighting, and on the whole it puts me off posting.

When I was younger, I loved older people they were always so nice it seemed, and wise too , I couldn't wait to get to be older... and be like them, but it seems to me at times that some my age have just brought the school bully mentality with them as they grew...

M0nica Wed 08-Nov-17 21:04:04

I actually think that most people on here are pleasant and courteous all the time. Try reading some other Forums, the flaming and name calling and abuse is horrendous.

We are a random collection of older people who like any other random collection includes the occasional curmudgeon, a few moaners and some one subject obsessives, but those apart, a nice friendly bunch.

The best things is that views and attitudes expressed on GN are so various and peoples circumstances so diverse that it exposes us to ways of life and problems and attitudes we might not otherwise meet in our every day life, which I have certainly benefited from.

We choose the glasses we look at GN through.

Leticia Wed 08-Nov-17 21:04:21

Just normal on GN! It has never been any different and at least it isn't as bad as MN!

Imperfect27 Wed 08-Nov-17 21:53:27

Well, I have been busy over the past few days and haven't been able to keep up with Gransnet ...just dipped in on the 'last hour' and this thread caught my eye.

First thought 'Yes Anya ... a lot of miserable old buggers (I have been cultivating my own grumpy old woman style quite nicely of late.)

Second thought - how I have missed this: the grimaces and gripes, the get ats, the get overs the giving my tuppence worth and as a counter balance, the kindness, the compassion, the sound advice and good sense, the fearless exchanges when views differ ... GN in all its fullness.

I am just glad it is here .

Nelliemoser Wed 08-Nov-17 22:40:50

Grumpy old Moo. I am facing about seven weeks of enforced and pretended Christmas and New Year jollity on TV, before we get back to some degree of nomality.

Am I downheated? Yes!.

Jalima1108 Wed 08-Nov-17 23:01:17

What I can’t believe is that the majority of those I’m talking about were growing up in the 60s, but it seems to have passed them by entirely.

Or perhaps we enjoyed the 60s so much and so thoroughly that we don't need to re-live them!!

Those were the days, my friend
We thought they'd never end

varian Wed 08-Nov-17 23:45:14

Do you remember a tv programme called "Grumpy Old Women"? I found I agreed with nearly everything they said, and it was years ago. I wasn't even middle aged then, let alone old. These days I try to look on the bright side - in spite of bloody brexit. ( I've only recently taken up swearing, and it's usually about that). Just thought I'd mention it.

Tegan2 Thu 09-Nov-17 00:58:52

On the subject of the 60's did'y'know that Ken Dodds 'Tears' was the biggest selling single of 1965 [outselling the Beatles] and he 3rd highest selling single of the 1960's. And he's STILL performing! [it was on R6 today; same programme that told me about the beach stones rule...]

kittylester Thu 09-Nov-17 06:48:06

I think he was 90 yesterday or the day before! Now that is depressing.

M0nica Thu 09-Nov-17 07:14:43

If you remember the 1960s, you weren't there.

Marmight Thu 09-Nov-17 07:27:56

Tegan - some friends saw Ken Dodd on stage recently and said it was one of the best shows they'd ever seenshock, no swearing, slight innuendo where tickling sticks were concerned, hilariously funny and he performed for 3 hours non stop. Not bad for an almost nonogenarian!

Fennel Thu 09-Nov-17 07:29:56

I remember the 1950s! (And the 1940s too, sad)

Anya Thu 09-Nov-17 07:53:30

Varian a few years ago I shaw a live showing of Grumpy Old Women that was touring. I forget who was in it...that comedienne with the very pale blue eyes was one of them. I laughed so much my stomach muscles aches for days. I was just so true to life.

There was only one man in the audience and when they spotted him!,,

Perhaps these Old Grumps on GN (who are conspicuously absent from this thread - come on ‘girls’ fight your corner! - were always like this. Is an Old Grump simply an ageing Young Grump or it it a complete metamorphosis that happens with age?

kittylester Thu 09-Nov-17 08:00:28

I don't suppose they recognise themselves as OG. Anya - but, if I'm here, I'm thinking I'm not one! grin

Anya Thu 09-Nov-17 08:03:49

You are clearly not Kitty

Anya Thu 09-Nov-17 08:06:38

Let’s have a Grunpy Old Woman emoji GNHQ please. ???

Nelliemoser Thu 09-Nov-17 09:05:40

Yes! Get us a Grumpy old woman. emoji
