I'm appalled by some of the disgraceful sexually inappropriate and even criminal behaviour currently coming to light. But it's made me think.
Couple of years ago during a holiday abroad we were part of a group on a train returning from an organised day trip. Suddenly the young very smart stewards and stewardesses commenced a fashion show promoting the locally produced clothing. Some wine had been drunk and everyone was in good spirits. As the young male steward was passing by some of the women there was great hilarity as they called him over and stroked his arm and made pretty inoffensive comments such as 'ooh feel this', accompanied by certain facial expressions. There was much laughter from us all. But got me thinking. If men had done same thing to the female stewards I think we would have been horrified. Is this a case of double standards and do we as women need to behave better? Or am I being a total spoilsport?

The Chippendales were paid for putting on a deliberate act that the audiences had paid for and part of that act was to get that sort of response. That is a very different situation.
Women need to stop their bad bullying behaviour towards men. It does happen and it should not.
There is a comment up thread about men commenting on women's cleavages. I'm a woman and I'm going to comment on cleavages generally. I dislike seeing them, both kinds: bum and bosom, women's or men's. I don't think it's prudishness on my part. I just think they are nearly always unattractive and I really don't understand why they are so fashionable.
Hmm, the fashionable bit might be the clue as to the why that I'm looking for. I think most personal appearance fashions are unattractive too.
Just getting it out there.
Women have become incredibly vulgar. We were out for a meal last night and there were 10 women at a table along from us. Their language was foul and they had to be spoken to a few times. Also, we could hardly hear each other speak for the noise they were making. Ruined our evening.
And women want to be respected!!!!!.
It’s the men I feel sorry for.
Just to clarify Gemmag. I am aware that all my life men could be 'incredibly vulgar', especially in a group. So you are saying that this is okay for them but not for women if they choose to behave like that. I wonder too if there were 9 other women in the restaurant (obviously your behavior was without fault in your eyes at least) who were meeting your standards of behaviour?
Women attacking women - not helpful.
Why are you putting words in gemmag's mouth, gg? She didn't say, nor even imply, that it's allright for men to behave as badly as the women she was complaining about. And why shouldn't a woman complain about bad behaviour from other women? Or men about bad behaviour from men? Or men and women about bad behaviour from either sex?
There will always be bad behaviour from both sexes and it is a matter of opinion as to what is classed as bad behaviour. Some might think oh they are just a bit loud whilst others might be deeply upset by their behaviour. I own a guest house so I see all sorts of behaviour good and bad and it is not always the ones you think doing the bad stuff.
Oh and Baggs I think my cleavage is OK. I am not big busted and I don’t wear low cut tops. I had not even noticed I was showing any in the photo when a male friend passed comments on it. It comes to something when you have to watch what you wear.
Indeed we always have kazziecookie, as you say. The idea that women have "become" incredibly vulgar makes me think that some may have lived a very sheltered life. Nothing wrong with that of course but my feeling is that you then really shouldn't then judge real-life, with it's good and bad and indifferent, by those very unworldly views. The 1950s advert women never really existed.
GGMR2........ I was talking about 10 women in a very smart restaurant last night who ruined the evening for a lot of people including myself, my husband and our friends. They were very unladylike, quite drunk and didn’t give a toss about anyone else. The noise from their table was quite deafening and it’s a wonder that they weren’t asked to leave.
I live in a university city and I see how young women behave and it’s not very nice.
Very young girls go around half dressed and barely able to stand up having had too much to drink.
So, you obviously think it’s alright for women to behave like ‘some’ men, to be vulgar and unladylike. I’m so glad that my DiLs and young nieces know how to conduct themselves as-“by the way” so do I since you ask!.
And you would know wouldn’t you. GG
And no, I have not lived a very sheltered life. You shouldn’t just assume things.
My issue with the opinion you put forward Gemmag is that you appear to expect a different behaviour from women to men.
If you had said a group of people had disrupted your meal you would have (and do have) my sympathy. However, you problem does not seem to be the disruption but the fact that they were women behaving just as men have always done and, to be honest, just as some women have always done. Not great perhaps but not because they are women and not because they are young today rather than 50 years ago.
you problem your problem
Can we agree that a lot of young people (obviously not all) behave very selfishly & in my opinion stupidly because they don't seem to take responsibility for their own behaviour & sadly in today's world of readily available porn, having casual sex, multiple partners, alcohol on tap etc etc, I think they have put themselves in danger & been let down by the perpetrators of seediness who are making money out of this exploitation. Did the suffeegettes really die for the right for everyone to have sex when ever with who ever without accepting the consequences of their own actions, many don't even take precautions or think about STDs
I think it's either bullying or not. If the person dishing it out is using it to have power or undermine someone then it's bullying. If it's just light hearted fun and people are offended, address it there and then.
Enjoy your cleavage, kazz. I don't have to like them and all I said was that I don't
.
I think you're reading too much into gemma's post, gg. Her criticism of a group of women doesn't mean she wouldn't also criticise a group of men who were behaving in the same way.
Can we agree that a lot of young people (obviously not all) behave very selfishly
I am happy to agree with the fact that some young people behave selfishly if you agree that some young people always have, some middle-aged people do too, as do some old people. In fact in every age group, in every generation some people have behaved selfishly. Yep ... I could go along with that.
Yes agree some people of all generations & gender have behaved selfishly & badly. I think I was trying to make the point that despite the information & change in attitudes & freedoms we haven't necessarily accomplished better standards & equality for anyone. Especially with regard to pregnancies & there being the possibility that several men could be the father ... that's not what was supposed to happen
I would agree that, re the thread headline, there are still some women who are left with no support and this is double standards working. However, as I understand it this number has gone down considerably with the vast drop in teenage pregnancies. As for who the father is of any particular child, that would simply not be any of my business. I can see concerns you so I assume you have come across a great many people in this position - I have never met one.
Who is it, do you think, says what is and what isn't supposed to happen? I thought it was society that decided as a whole and that includes the young and their opinions.
I think the only people who need to know the identity of the father is ,the mother & her child, sadly not everyone gets to know who their genetic father is .
And some times if a child is very lucky ( sarcasm) they may eventually be able to get a paternity test, sometimes with a chance of the father being one out of 3 or 4
So what? I can't see the relevance of this in this particular discussion. Seriously, how many people do you know who do not know their genetic father?
Someone has been watching too much Jeremy Kyle
It’s a wise child who knows it’s own Father.
