On another thread I noted someone is about to say goodbye to her car, which is named Mildred and it got me wondering who else names their car and why that name.

My last car was Percy because it had the letters PCY in the registration.

My last car was known as BIG RED, because she was very small. I now have WEE WHITE who is also very small

A name for the car? Sorry but I think it's nonsense!

My car’s called Clio for obvious reasons. The previous one was called WTF because I misread the number plate.
Our first car, of which we were very proud, was called Flo because a better off friend looked disparagingly at the odometer and said, “ It’s been flogged!” I promptly retorted that we had called it Flo for that reason. It used to really irritate him when he heard us call the car by name and, wickedly I always used to mention how well she was running, what good petrol consumption etc. whenever we met.

I have a bright red Hyundai i10 called Poppy. Prior to her I had a dark blue Corsa known as Babe. I've always named my cars because they are so much more than mechanical devices; at the time my first marriage broke up, my Mk2 Ford Escort, Miss Ellie, was my escape route, and subsequent cars have all played their part in my life.

I have a lovely old Mercedes called Mabel and my husband also has one that I've named Synil. Both names are rather old fashioned and suggest grand old ladies toe, which our cars are.,My little focus is called Bella and hubby's Range Rover is called Pita (pain in the articles ?).

Never have?

pamdixon - how about Tatiana or Anastasia?

Our first car, a 1949 Austin A40 was called Jezebel.
My last car, a 20 year old Volvo, was called Helga (after Hagar the Horrible's wife). The best car I've ever had.

Our blue Skoda is called "Kung Blue" - the reason being that our previous car, a red Panda, was called Kung-Fu by DGS!

At a tangent, can everyone remember the registration number of their first car, but none of the others?

maddy629 Sun 01-Oct-17 18:09:07

Mine is called Hermione because she goes like magic.

Matilda the Merc. Our lovely CLK 320 soft top. She had 250,000 miles on the clock when we said goodbye and she never let us down once. My OH used her to travel to work a round trip of 80 miles per day and later so did I. She travelled the length and breadth of GB with me so many times so a well travelled Matilda. We loved her.

I reckon they keep on breaking down if you don't treat them as a friend. My first was Bluebell and was 13 when she was traded in this one is Beatty and will be 13 this December. The car my husband never named kept on breaking down, lol.x

Pong - the final three letters of its registration plate are EWH! Anyone looking to buy a new car - I can heartily recommend the Smart ForFour. Very economical, incredibly light steering and turning circle.

We have just bought a Bedford Dormobile, which the previous owner had dubbed 'Nessa' as in Nessa n Dormobile! Corny or what. Mind you, our Singer is called Pearl, and our old Fire Tender is called Elsie Waters!

Envious Sun 01-Oct-17 19:55:47

Carlotta ?

Most of our old cars had nicknames, but most of them not repeatable. Damned things! One that I can repeat was the Exxon Valdez. Partly because half of the registration number was XON, but mainly because it spewed oil everywhere.

On a point someone else has raised, I can remember my first three cars' registration numbers, and those of my mother's first two cars, but nothing since.

I have never named a car, but I can't improve on that of my current car: Yeti.

MamaCaz we had an Austin Princess which we called "Torry Canyon" for the same reason, DH was banned from using his Employer's car parkhmm

Car before this one was called "Cherry" as the Ford colour was Morello as in Morello cherries. My car is dark blue (Ford had stopped doing Morello when we exchanged), might get referred to as "Blue" but not often.

I named my 1st laptop "Fred" & one I'm using now is "Dell Boy" (it's a Dellgrin)

I do swear at the SatNav, argue with it, tell it I'm not going that way & of course to shut up wink

lemongrove Mon 02-Oct-17 15:01:32

Have never named a car, but if I had done,we had a horror of a car some years ago, that I could have named ‘The Thing’?

HannahLoisLuke Tue 03-Oct-17 11:12:27

Mabel, Florence and now Betty.

My son called his first car Blow Job because the last part of the reg was BLJ. That's what he told me anyway ?
