What lovely reminders here. A keeper did a shooting go. I can remember every word. All the radio favourites on Uncle Mac, Football Crazy, Sparky etc. KatyK. A song book for our forthcoming trip! As you know, I'm in charge of frivolities

Having recently seen Victoria & Abdul at the cinema reminded me of the song "The ranks of the Prophet were brave men and bold and quite unaccustomed to fear, But the bravest of these was called if you please Abdul Abulbul Amir" I can't remember much more of it apart from "The heroes were plenty in ......... the ranks which were led by the Shah". It has been driving me mad trying to remember more of it. ?

Gosh what wonderful memories all these songs are ..!

My mum and Dad had a beautiful wooden-cased wind-up gramophone and as well as listening to nursery rhyme records I loved hearing "Keep right on to the end of the road", The Laughing Policeman and Harry Lauder singing The Road to the Isles. My very own favourite had Teddy Bears Picnic one side and Dicky Bird Hop on the other. Anyone remember those?

Teddy Bears Picnic on my aunt's wind up and on an even older, massive wind up of my grandmother's was Nymphs and Shepherds. Tack cleaning at Pony Club Camp was always Quatermaster's Stores and She'll Be Coming Round The Mountain When She Comes.

The Laughing Policeman, but can't remember who sang it ?

Does anyone remember Sparky and the Magic Piano? I loved it!

My grandkids all know ' my baby 'as gorn down the plug'ole' and 'I wished I could sprechen sie deutsch' I guess it's up to us to make sure all these songs continue.....

The flip side of the Teddy Bears' Picnic was Hush Hush, Hush, here comes the bogey man. It was quite scary when I was 4.

That's the one PollyPerkins. Loved it. Also, Green grow the leaves among the Hawthorne trees. Kids today don't know what they are missing!!

My mother used to sing:

That's what they taught me when I went to school.

It goes on for loads more verses with silly names for parts of the body, but I have never found anyone else who knows it.

Also we used to sing

"One finger one thumb keep moving
One finger one thumb keep moving
One finger one thumb keep moving
We'll all be merry and bright!"

This goes on, adding a movement with every verse, and the verses get longer. Again - I know noone else who's ever heard it.

PS - I daren't google "with my hands on myself..." and nor have I looked for it on Youtube!

JackyB the peripatetic music teacher used to singing that song with the children at school, the children loved it! I bet she is still teaching them!

Charles Penrose sang The Laughing Policeman, and how I loved singing "Among the leaves so greeno" which is the" Jackie Boy, Master, Singee Well"etc song. I so enjoyed "Singing Together" at school

Does the song have a line "this is my bread basket"? whilst pointing at your chest or tummy. "These are my knee knockers" its familiar but I can't remember it properly!

After the ball was over, she took out her glass eye etc. Loved and sung with gusto by the children at my school.

I remember almost all of these. I'd forgotten the baby going down the plug hole, I loved after the ball was over, sang that and McGinty had a Donkey and he kept it in the yard, with my gran.
annodomino, we had that same record with Teddy Bears picnic on one side and Hush here comes the bogeyman on the other. Can you remember the name for the singer, I seem to have Henry Hall going round my memory but its probably wrong.

I remember all the words to the Beverly Hill Billies.

To redeem myself slightly, I also remember the words from Sunday school songs. And In the Quartermasters Store was always sung on the bus on the way home from the annual Sunday School outing. I used to know the words to There Was an Old Woman Who Swallowed a Fly but I've forgotten most of them now.

One finger one thumb goes on something like:- One finger, one thumb, one arm, one leg, one nod of the head keep moving. Repeat twice then we'll all be merry and bright. Next verse has this verse then add stand up, sit down keep moving and so on with all the actions along the way.

What about run rabbit, run rabbit run run run. Have heard this a couple of times since on Dads Army.

I can imagine mine handing them over (If I'm still here) for a taste of what they grew up with but I don't really think DGD1's warbling of Whitney's 'I will always love you' will catch on at bedtime.

'a keeper did a shooting go' is the party piece of two of my bil at family gatherings. They also sing one about a cabin boy drowning to a very similar tune. I'll have to Google that one.

A song I loved was 'The railroad runs through the middle of the house' sung, I think, by Rosemary Clooney.
