I gather that all is sorted, well done Cherrytree!

So today we're here to celebrate another year that passes,
I urge you all at this point, please recharge your glasses,
Raise a cheer, raise a glass, but please be reassured, you really don't need to stand up, you can do it on your .....chairs.

I can't see anything wrong with you adding a.n.other toast to round off, even if there have been others. I love any excuse to raise a glass in a toast!!! I haven't anything useful to add, but knowing that you are celebrating an 80th birthday as well as a 50th reminded me of a favourite line from the film 'On Golden Pond' when a nervous, mature boyfriend is introduced to his girlfriend's father on his 80th birthday and tries to make small talk by asking' "So how does it feel to be 80?"

Reply: "Twice as bad as being 40!"

Love it! smile

If the other person has made a toast to your sister I would end thus,

Finally I would like to say how privelledged we all feel to be surrounded by so many wonderful friends and family members, who have joined in this celebration. Please will you join me in a toast To, Friendship and Family.

Yes I agree Ana
She is a very relaxed type of lady.
Just need to keep the glasses topped up winewine

Cherrytree59 Wed 05-Jul-17 18:59:54

Oh how I wish I had posted sooner

I have done the Time machine thingy with a quiz (to do with my sister and her exploits) to keep everybody awake and involved.
Its all sorted bar the ending.
However phoenix if you can come up with rhyming ending I would be forever in your debt.
She is an extremely friendly person
a girl who loves a good party (my sister)
She is a chef and feeds everybody
Her chocolates and cakes are legendary in the village.

I can't say much more.

I will use your card idea luckygirl
It will fit quite well with a quiz as the questions will be the cliff hanger

Ana Wed 05-Jul-17 18:38:18

I don't really see why everyone should have to 'be upstanding' for any toast - far better if people can just relax and have a top-up whenever each toast is made.

One little tip is to write the speech on index cards; and it is fun to leave a bit of a cliff-hanger at the end of some of the cards and leave folk wondering what is coming next! My OH did this to very good effect in his 3 wedding speeches.

AbrileSmetschel Wed 05-Jul-17 18:17:36

Exactly

phoenix Wed 05-Jul-17 18:11:25

PS No one ever objects to a second charge of the glass and toast!

phoenix Wed 05-Jul-17 18:09:44

Speeches are always easier to read if written in rhyme.

For many years I have done these for special occasions for friends, acquaintances, and then even strangers!

This was a word of mouth thing, I still do it, providing the people concerned can give me a bit of background info, names, dates, amusing anecdotes etc.

I'd be happy to give it a go, if you like Cherrytree

Cherrytree59 Wed 05-Jul-17 18:04:55

Oops
lots of heart in my speech!!

Cherrytree59 Wed 05-Jul-17 18:03:27

As ever I turn to GN
My sister 50 and her FIL 80 are having a joint birthday party.
I have already had my style advice from some lovely GNers

My sister has wrote a speech that probably covers herself (as in thank yous) and a toast wishing her FIL a Happy Birthday.

but I've been told content is top secret and it is going to be read out by a male friend

I am also saying a few (top secret) words
I will be asking those present to join me in my Time Machine for a short journey back in time starting with year my sister was born.
It will be done with gentle humour.
I am the only person left that can talk about her early life.
My dilemma is;
I think that it is more than likely the person reading her speech will perform a toast, ask guests to stand and join him in wishing my sister Happy Birthday.

When my Time Machine returns to 2017.
If the speech reader hasn't toasted sister then not problem, I will do the Happy birthday toast

However if he has made a toast,
I'm not sure how to word my ending and bring to a close
(I can't ask DH as whole speech will be rewritten!)

Do I ask everybody to stand once again or is that a bit OTT?

Think I would want keep the ending lighthearted and informal.

PS any speech advice most welcome smile
