Summer of 69

23, married & expecting my first baby end of September, happy days

I was 21 and and was a member of the Womens Royal Army Corps stationed in Germany. That was the year I got married. My husband was in the British army and we got married in the British consulate in Dusseldorf. Such happy days. Have just celebrated our 48th wedding anniversary.

moved to Cyprus with RAF in July,eight weeks pregnant with twins,although I didnt know then.

In the summer of 69 Iwas pregnant with my first child who was born in the September. I remember when I went on my maternity leave, end of July/August
we had some really hot days, my ankles were swelling, so some afternoons I would run a tepid bath, lay in it and read a book. Cold drink nearby. Happy Days.

I was 21 living in London having an amazing time. Boyfriend at the time had an open top Jeep that we went everywhere in. Always seemed to be sunny.

I was 13 & still at school. Year my stepson was born ?

I was doing computer related research in a university which only had one computer-for the entire university. Went to the senior common room to watch the moon landing on a tiny black and white tv. I still find it pretty mind blowing that they got to the moon and back with the sort of computer power they had then.

It was certainly one of my best years. I was 14 and went every week to an amazing local club where we saw bands such as King Crimson, the Who, The Amazing World of Arthur Brown (who nearly set the place on fire ). Free was our local band. I once spent an interval chatting at the bar to the beautiful Marc Bolan of Tyrannosaurus Rex, who bought me a drink. I was resplendent in my homemade purple panne velvet hot pants at the time.

I was 14 and still at school. Everyone was assembled in the hall to watch on black and white TV some items about the moon landings but the actual 'man on the moon' bit didn't occur until later on in the evening as I recall Mum coming up to wake us up to see it if we were interested. My sister and I said no, we weren't and I don't regret that. I still have no interest whatsoever in outer space. Haven't we made a big enough arse of planet earth?
I remember being more interested in wearing my home-made kaftan dress with floppy sleeves and my first experiments with make-up. I had a necklace that my Dad called a 'cow-bell' which I was too self-conscious to wear outside my bedroom.

I was in the middle of doing my GCEs, aged 16, and did my revision in the back garden lying on the lawn on an old curtain. (No sun beds in those days!)I was also going out with my first boyfriend, whom I had been chasing for some time and had finally caught! I'm not sure my revision was as thorough as it could have been as my mind was on other things! I went on holiday with my parents, touring Europe in our Ford Prefect and went to visit some relatives who were staying in a cottage in Switzerland for the summer. They greeted me with "Congratulations!" waving the local home paper which they had had sent over,as my cousin, their daughter, who was with them, had also done her GCEs and the paper had the results. Luckily, both our sets of results were fine!

I hate to bring the mood down but 1969 was a bad year for me. (Amongst the very bad years of my childhood/teenage years.) I won't go into detail but my home background wasn't at all good and I felt like I didn't fit in at school.

I wish I did have happy memories of that time. I do love listening to the music though!!

BBbevan - I used to go to Bournemouth in the 60s. I loved it. I do have happy memories from before the age of 7 before my mum died. I loved Bournemouth.

Was doing some temping in London that summer and managed to get to the Stones concert in Hyde Park. Cost me/lots of others nothing (how different from today!) and enjoyed lying back in the warm sun listening to the music.( Much more interesting than the moon landings.....!!)

Watched the bucket of butterflies upended by Mick Jagger in memory of Brian Jones - and could not believe my luck passing MJ in the street no more than three feet away that same day, white dress and trousers and all. No security to speak of; everyone around relaxed and happy; flowers in my hair.

On 20th July 1969 I was in the labour ward and after a very long labour my daughter was born. They told me man had walked on the moon and I thought - SO WHAT???

Next day I thought. Hey a man walked on the moon yesterday!
