Irrational thinking

I have quite the opposite problem. I live with a fresh air fiend who throws open the windows in the middle of winter, and has the audacity to tell me that it's stuffy in here and we need some fresh air!

Could you 2 do a partner swap or something? Problem solved

I'm a window opener (even in winter lol). I sympathise completely. No way could I live without fresh air clearing the stuffiness out of the house. I admit in winter I don't open so many windows or for so long but everyday the bedroom and bathroom windows have to be open for at least a few minutes.

I've never heard of recycling air in a building. How does it work?

I am a window opener why would you not want fresh air in your home? Sounds crazy to me

I couldn't live anywhere without having doors and windows open whenever possible. We had a 'Fen blow' yesterday which meant having to batten down the hatches or else we'd all be covered in black dust.

Only a gentle breeze today so everything's open!

I'm another window opener - I can't understand why people buy "air fresheners" when all they have to do open a window.

What a strange set up. I've never heard of a system of air filtering and, as you say, what is the point of windows then.

I too like opening the windows. Even if it does bring some dust in, I think your husband is being rather dictatorial and a bit silly.

As for air fresheners, including scented candles, research has shown that they can be quite damaging to health.

Ours are all firmly shut at the moment and I hate it, as I love to let a bit of fresh air in. We're in a terrace and groups of wasps/bees are travelling back and forth along it searching for their next homes. Next door both ways seem to be in favour with them at the moment, so fingers crossed they won't pick us this year!

When you say air is 'recycled', do you mean you have air conditioning? If you do have AC, then opening windows is counterproductive, the cooled air will be sucked outside and replaced with warm air.

I wonder if the OP means "filtered" air. A friend whose wife suffered really badly with asthma installed a filtered air system in their home and although the windows did open they never were.

I hope it's not recycled air, that's what you have on aircraft and the reason you feel crap after a long flight. Very bad for your health.

Who does the dusting in your house?
If, as I suspect it is you, then why is the dust a problem for your husband?

Thank you for all your answers, they make me feel much better.The recycled air, I dont really understand, we live in Sweden and this apparantly lets the air in through a filter, then lets it out into the house again, complicated to explain because I dont really understand how it works, it is NOT Air Conditioning, so opening windows doesnt affect things, I am going to write to the company who built the house, and ask if windows can be opened! I might as well act as a fool. Watch this space!

I can empathise with your comment about obeying a control freak. I know from experience that it's easier to let them have their own way and sadly (in my experience) safer.

Hello again, I have just written to the building firm about the windows, as soon as I receive a reply I will explain what happens, and hopefully can open a window or two before I expire!

I`d love to open windows, but daren`t, as I`m terrified of wasps. I opened the back door about a foot the other day, for 10 minutes, and a gigantic wasp came in, so windows and doors are to remain closed.

I think the OP may have a 'green' or low energy house which is extremely well insulated and whereby all the incidental heat in the house is recycled via a heat exchanger thereby reducing the electric/gas bill.

I saw something similar on a programme called My Flat Pack Home.

callgirl how do you manage when you have to go out ? i only because i am a window and door opener, the first think i do in the morning is open the door to let some air in, DH has a hissy fit as he says it allows the flies to come in but as well live beside the sheep and cows we have plenty of flies outside which never seem to bother him when he spends hours in his shed with the door wide open !

Hondagirl, I think you have it, yes thats what happens, it is a low energy house, too well insulated to be honest, it came as a "flat pack",we have very low energy bills, but I still wish I could open a window now and again. (I do this when DH is not at home)

Recycled air is the price you pay for lower heating bills.

But now your heating would normally be off?

As to control of the windows being open or closed, is this the price you pay for making your husband do the dusting?
