Security? What security.

I was talking to my hairdresser who has recently moved house to what is, on the face of it, a respectable neighbourhood. An elderly man who lives two doors away had to leave his house temporarily as it was completely trashed by his son who is apparently a drug addict, and stole just about everything he had. While they were clearing out the son's room, they found a gun. The man immediately reported it to the police and it took them THREE DAYS to come and investigate the matter and take the gun away! It makes you wonder.

My OH has just this evening had his visit for his firearms cert renewal. Even though the same officer had been only a few months ago for a variation it certainly was not rubber stamped. The only thing he skipped was actually getting the rifles out and checking the serial numbers. They were here nearly an hour.

Years ago we were visited by the police when they were investigating a murder. They were visiting everyone who had a .22 pistol and taking the guns for testing. Disregarding the fact that if you were going to kill someone you would be unlikely to use a licenced and therefore traceable firearm, DH wasn't best pleased to find that they had left the guns they had collected spread across the seats of their car in full view.

The thing that always happens is that security is increased after an attack such as this, then, after a while when there have been no further attacks, people relax and assume that it will not happen.

chicken I am presuming that the people who rubber-stamped the shotgun licence were satisfied that your DH was taking the same precautions as before but as for the passport - the courier needs to be reported as this is not normal procedure.

Thursday early evening in a local shopping outlet there were armed police walking about. They were wearing what I assume was body armour and holding their guns. They were friendly and speaking to everyone. DGS was as surprised as I was.

Slightly off subject but I have posted on here before about people plonking bags/rucksacks etc on tables or on floors in restaurants or pubs etc and then wandering off to the bar, toilet, or out for a smoke or something. It happened today when we were out for lunch. What is the matter with people?
It makes me nervous. We have brought unattended bags to the attention fo staff on a few occasions and they have looked at us as though we are mad.

Their lives even.

I was in Manchester on Tuesday, the main railway station was almost deserted and certainly police free.
I taxied through the centre to the Manchester Royal Infirmary which along with the Children's Hospital which is on the same site wads also very very quiet and no more security but actually that reassured me. I assumed the security was well hidden but that people were going about there lives without fear or change.
