How do you sit.

I was reading in a novel about being judged old by the way you sit. Apparently, to sit with your ankles crossed, with hands resting on knees is the default position of a pensioner!
To look youthful, cross your legs high up or lie full-length on the sofa (that's me) or? You tell me.

Why did I say that, my mind is away with the fairies - I meant my Dad was identifiable because he was the only one on the front row with his legs crossed

Duh, need a wine

Jalima1108 Mon 08-May-17 18:46:08

I never thought it was ladylike thank you whitewave smile
I just laughed when I saw old photos of ancestors from the 1800s and one of my father, who was identifiable out of a huge number of people, because they were all sitting with ankles crossed !!

Although I do sprawl around at home, feet up usually on a pouffe in the evening!

Brilliant SueDonim!! although I don't recognise any as a relative but you never know!
Some of my Dad's cousins were cricketers (not professional as far as I know)

Jalima, I was thinking of this, dailynews.lk/2017/04/28/sports/114386/6th-annual-big-match-today-tholangamuwa-central-takes-galahitiyawa-central I suppose, rather than that photo of queen, although she doesn't have her hands on her knees. grin

For as long as I can remember I had the habit of sitting with one leg tucked underneath me. I can still do it, the only difference being that now I can't stand up afterward!!

stillaliveandkicking Mon 08-May-17 17:56:06

On my backside grin

Queen crosses her ankles, its ladylike. I sprawl any old how. At the moment lounging on sofa with legs stretched out.

I suppose it depends to some extent on how long your legs are. If I sit at a dining chair and cross my feet at the ankle my legs would naturally fall akimbo, so I'd have to force them together, which would be uncomfortable!

It's much easier for me to cross my legs (thigh over thigh) although I've noticed some men can't do it because their legs are either too short or too chunky.

Katek Mon 08-May-17 17:04:22

I sit in corner of the sofa with my legs curled up. Dining chairs I do tend to use the crossed ankle manoeuvre-we were always told at school never to cross our legs as it wasn't ladylike!

Beammeupscottie Mon 08-May-17 16:52:07

sometimes I have to roll off; a sight for sore eyes let me tell you.

vampirequeen Mon 08-May-17 16:47:06

grin Beammeupscottie. Just the rest of my leg.

Christinefrance Mon 08-May-17 16:35:50

Yes my hairdresser says the same thing Printmiss, at home I like to be full length on the sofa with cushions. I don't like it when we have guests and I have to sit properly, anti social or what? smile

Beammeupscottie Mon 08-May-17 16:21:30

Vp. Is the rest hanging over your leg or other bits! I always lie if I can. I am a proper sprawler, propped up by numerous cushions. I have three sofas, all full of cushions (15 in all). Love comfort.

PRINTMISS Mon 08-May-17 16:16:08

My hair dresser always asks me to uncross my legs if I am sitting that way whilst she is cutting my hair, says it helps get the cut straight.

KatyK Mon 08-May-17 15:58:07

My osteopath says you should never cross your legs. She said it's really bad for your back.

vampirequeen Mon 08-May-17 15:54:52

I sort of sprawl into the corner of the sofa with one foot on the ground and the other leg along the cushions to below the knee then the rest hanging over the edge.

If I'm in a strange place I tend to the way school said the girls should sit. Sit straight up but body turned at a slight angle with knees together, ankles crossed and hands together on lap. I guess that's the old lady way grin

Anniebach Mon 08-May-17 15:46:30

Sitting at my desk ankles under chair and crossed , not good if you get up quickly and don't uncross ankles . Never sit on sofa , always lie on it and just realised feet on arm of sofa and ankles are crossed . Not royal - unless descended from last prince of Wales- so must be old

Jalima1108 Mon 08-May-17 15:04:35

Never at the ankles, though - who on earth does that? confused

Oh no! Anyway, you'll know me when you see me grin (unless it is HM or Kate - or janea who must have royal genes too!)

Jalima1108 Mon 08-May-17 15:00:42

It must be in my royal genes Riverwalk!!

Jalima1108 Mon 08-May-17 14:59:55

I've just realised that I'm sitting on a typing chair with my ankles crossed blush

Jalima1108 Mon 08-May-17 14:59:04

The crossed ankles/hands on knees sounds very odd! I don't think I've ever known anyone who sits like that.
I find myself sitting like that if I'm out somewhere sitting on a hard chair! I know I'mm odd but I was startled to see that in some very old family photos some of my ancestors were sitting like that too!
As soon as I realise that I'm doing it I uncross my ankles and try to sit with my legs neatly to the side.

sunseeker Mon 08-May-17 14:52:12

Wasn't crossed ankles, hands on knees the way people were taught in deportment classes? Not that I would know as I never went to any but seem to recall reading something along those lines!

Riverwalk Mon 08-May-17 14:35:56

Two old ladies

Crossed ankles

Tippy22 Mon 08-May-17 14:33:58

I like to sit with legs straight out on the sofa but my default position is squidged up between the arm of the sofa and the back of the sofa with my legs curled up, that way I can get my electric heating pad into the bit of my back that always gives me gip(?). Haven't been able to cross my legs ever since I had my hips replaced.

janeainsworth Mon 08-May-17 14:31:16

ana on a dining chair I annoy the hell out of MrA by sticking my feet out as far as possible, before he has a chance to encroach on my spacegrin

SueDonim Mon 08-May-17 14:29:17

The crossed ankles/hands on knees sounds very odd! I don't think I've ever known anyone who sits like that.

I recently realised I was sitting with one or other leg curled up under me and I was delighted about it! I used to sit that way a lot then three years ago, I broke my leg in two places which put the kibosh on that.

My leg was painful for a long time even after it was officially 'mended' but I've gone on improving all this time and being able to sit comfortably on the broken leg is a definite sign of that. smile
