My grandson is not yet 2 years old yet he will hit his mummy around the face. He doesn't do this with any one else. He won't kiss her or hug her goodnight or when she leaves for work. But at other times he hugs and kisses her and they play together and you can tell how much they love each other. He's been doing this for a while and I'm a bit concerned about the smacking. She taps him back and tells him it's naughty to do this but he still does it. Has any one experienced this and if so how do we deal with it.

Thank you for most of the posts. Much appreciated. My daughter also posted on mumsnet and got a few pointers from mums.

Bluebe11 I did that with DGD when she pinched my cheeks very hard - looking lovingly into my eyes as she did it!

'Oh, poor, poor Granny, sob, sob, that hurts, kiss me better!'
So she did, looking very contrite.

Ok handmadedogsweaters - you're bitey toddler is now 12 and nicking stuff fro shops, hanging around the older kids who shoplift, deal drugs and rob houses. Do you replicate that behaviour as a means of teaching them not to do it? Before you tell me that slapping, hitting and shouting will stop the toddler becoming a shop lifter, burglar, car thief, drug dealer - it won't, it absolutely won't. The adolescents who follow that path have often received the kind of parenting you advice. Not all of them, some ok parents like most of us here can find ourselves confronted with an out of control adolescent but violence is never, ever the answer.
