Just heard that Cadbury chocolate factory are dropping the Easter from Easter Eggs. Obviously so that they can sell them to other religions.

IMO this is not right. Easter is a Christian celebration, and this is a Christian country. We celebrate Lent, Easter, Whit Sunday and Christmas as we have always done.

I for one will not be buying Cadbury eggs (now made in America) anymore. This is all about Greed!

This ridiculous story was just about the design of the poster used by the National Trust, where the word Easter was prominent in several places, for anyone who cared. Just another distraction from serious news.

Poly58 - you said ...

'For the last 60 years ( and my parents before me) we have waited excitedly for "Easter bunny" and I will continue to pass that tradition down my family. In this horrible, nasty world it's wonderful to have some happiness so let's not spoil that'

I agree with you and tried to do just that last week on GN and put a post about Easter on chat, however, no-one responded.

I'm not at all upset (maybe felt a bit stupid for writing it) but it did make me wonder if Easter is 'on its way out'.

On reading this post it seems that it's not.

As I said previously SallyDapp I haven't bought Cadbury products since that shameful broken promise. I have no idea what the chocolate tastes like now but others have also told me it has changed beyond all recognition!

Aepgirl Wed 05-Apr-17 12:15:00

I shall certainly not be buying any made by Cadbury 's - in fact I haven't bought anything of theirs since they were taken over by Kraft and changed the chocolate recipe.

It is similar to the Red Cross shops not being allowed to put a nativity scene in their window displays.

I have a devout Muslim friend who thinks we are bonkers not to be proud of our Christian festivals.

SallyDapp Wed 05-Apr-17 12:11:46

We have been boycotting Cadbury since they reneged on the deal they had with the staff prior to a over bid, they promised to keep jobs in Keynsham and Birmingham. In the blink of an eye the entire staff at Keynsham were redundant, jobs were moved to Poland and the land up for sale for housing all at massive profits. Gone are the days when the initial ideology of the founders was the welfare of their staff whilst making an acceptable profit, it's all about huge profits, rich directors and stuff the staff with redundancy and zero hour contracts. I'm amazed Cadbury still have a consumer market. And their chocolate tastes awful now anyway.

CleopatraSoup Wed 05-Apr-17 11:55:00

It was a cynical marketing exercise.

The quality of Cadbury chocolate is nowhere near as good as it used to be because it is now owned by US company Kraft who meddled with the recipes to cut costs.

Today's cartoon by Steve Bell in the Guardian sums up Treesa and the whole fiasco very well:

Goodness, Poly580 I didn't know that the Easter Bunny was UK tradition dating back to heaven knows when. I always thought it was an American import, and a rather naff one at that as what on earth do bunnies have to do with Easter? As far as I'm concerned we're not losing any 'traditions' at all.

I was brought up by churchgoing parents; no bunnies but Easter eggs because they symbolised new birth and life, which ties in with the Resurrection and the 'birth' of a new religion.

Cadburys creme eggs have never been called Easter eggs. I don't know what all the fuss is about.

Poly580 Wed 05-Apr-17 11:00:55

I suppose it was easy to put this one out there after Christmas being removed from many things and changed to "winter" on many adverts.
I believe if we have room all are welcome in our country but I also strongly believe we should keep our traditions or all countries will be the same. If you don't like our traditions then go to a country that suits you. Our traditions are constantly being eroded. For ex. you can no longer say blackboard in schools but it's fine to say whiteboard. we are bending over backwards to accommodate and losing our own identity and traditions in the process. For the last 60 years ( and my parents before me) we have waited excitedly for "Easter bunny" and I will continue to pass that tradition down my family. In this horrible, nasty world it's wonderful to have some happiness so let's not spoil that.

I am not a Christian but appreciate and value that I live in a Christian country and feel very strongly that Christian festivals are celebrated and Easter should be mentioned by the NT. all this PC is rubbish

rosesarered Wed 05-Apr-17 10:56:15

Nope, nobody has said it at all gilly

gillybob Wed 05-Apr-17 10:47:41

I don't think anyone has said that Easter is banned paddyann confused

Or have they?

Yorkshiregel Wed 05-Apr-17 10:47:02

The thing I object to is that slowly, but slowly, we are being encouraged to accept that our religion is on its way out. One of our churches in Shrewsbury is now filled with things to sell ie jumpers, crafts, books, nothing at all to do with Christianity. This is something that Jesus reacted to strongly. Then we were told we cannot wear our crosses at work in case we offend other religions, who are allowed to walk about wearing turbans and burkas, so that is hypocritical. Red cross windows must not display the nativity. The German Stollen cake is being sold to replace Christmas cake, maybe we may not be calling it that soon? Perhaps crosses on hot cross buns will also be phased out?

In actual fact I am not sure that this is about religion at all. I think Cadbury have realised that if they chop the Easter word from the name they can sell their eggs all year round and to a wider range of customers. In other words this is about GREED. Or of course it could be that Cadbury chocolates are nothing like the original product and so sales have been going down. If they go down much more because people do not like 'Hershey chocolate' then we might see Cadbury closed down altogether?

paddyann Wed 05-Apr-17 10:46:25

NOBODY HAS BANNED EASTER honestly does no one ever read the facts!

pollyperkins Wed 05-Apr-17 10:45:29

Actually the NT is trying to encourage young families to visit and easter egg hunts are popular with children. I guess Cadbury s are sponsoring these and providing eggs to keep costs down for NT and gsini g some promotion so its a win-win situation for these two organisations - or it was till all the negative publicity occurred which actultI think is ridiculous and not worth getting steamed up about. It doesnt stop anyone houng to church to celebrate Easter and it maybe raises some awareness in the children!

gillybob Wed 05-Apr-17 10:45:08

My "point" GGm2 is in response to the OP which says Just heard that Cadbury chocolate factory are dropping the Easter from Easter Eggs. Obviously so that they can sell them to other religions

Now I have realised that this may be a non-story or fake news or whatever (although DJ's link would suggest otherwise) but my point remains "leave our religious festivals alone"

Christmas is Christmas (even if some idiot council renames, it the Winter Festival) Easter is still Easter etc.

Alidoll Wed 05-Apr-17 10:43:36

Brilliant..even more chocolate for me then!!

rosesarered Wed 05-Apr-17 10:40:09

It isn't actually Fake News either, the latest on it is that the word Easter was quietly dropped from the website promoting Easter Egg Hunts in NT properties to Egg Hunts or Cadbury Egg Hunts.Due to the hue and cry the word has been reinstated. That wasn't to do with Cadbury posters or shops etc but the advertising on the NT sites, I expect some bright spark thought if it was Egg Hunt rather than Easter Egg Hunt it would pull in more punters!

Lilyflower Wed 05-Apr-17 10:37:53

PC gone mad. I am an atheist but also a cultural Christian and for the whole of my 60 years the chocolate eggs sold at Easter have been called Easter eggs and that is what they should remain.

I am actually even crosser with the National Trust than I am with Cadbury's. The latter is a company which exists to make money so they will take any route to maximise their audience and profits.

The NT, however, was set up to preserve houses and land for the nation. This aim is meaningless wthout the cultural and historical contexts in which the houses were built.

If the organisation, as it has by banning Easter, takes up a leftwing internationalist, anti-religious stance to rub the noses of the British people in their imperialist mess then it is betraying its founder' principles. I think most NT members value the culture and traditions of their own country even if they do not actually believe in the Easter bunny.

mernice Wed 05-Apr-17 10:36:06

'Easter' it's just a word and for those who hold it special, you don't need 'the word ' it's in your hearts and minds. Let the word go if I means that others can join in the season. The word will never disappear from those places that truly celebrate the Biblical Easter. It's Soring, new life, new hope ......let it be for everyone and without conflict. Be bigger than that.

rosesarered Wed 05-Apr-17 10:34:35

Yes, you agree with me and others Margrete in that the churches will be very full, in fact if you are late it's standing room only in churches for Easter services. I expect that
GGM2 either never goes to church, so is guessing that not many do, or it is a very long time since she went to one.

margrete Wed 05-Apr-17 10:22:41

In response to GGM2 and rosesarered, our church, St Laurence and All Saints, Eastwood, will be full on Easter Sunday. There will be a dawn service at 5 am which we have attended in previous years, although not this year - DH still recovering from surgery. We'll go to Family Eucharist instead.

As someone else said, Easter is actually the most important event in the Christian year, more so than Christmas.

We shan't be buying any Easter eggs - all GC are grown up and no one wants them.

I didn't grow up with chocolate Easter eggs - all sweets were rationed! We used to boil eggs with various things to make them different colours, then roll them down a hill on Easter Monday.

If I ever eat chocolate now it's got to be better quality than what Cadbury's make.

pollyperkins Wed 05-Apr-17 10:18:37

But if you look at the NT publicity it says something like Easter Fun - join the Cadburys great egg hunt! In other words it does mention Easter and this is all a fuss about nothing! But calling it a cadbury's egg hunt is of course promoting Cadbury's!
As for the Easter bunny I thought that came from America. When I was a child we decorated hens eggs and had ONE chocolate egg. No mention of bunnies or egg hunts then!
I agree that eggs originally came from a pagan tradition celebrating spring but the idea of new life fits in well with the resurrestion of Jesus and some say cracking open the eggs represents the opening of the tomb. Its all symbolic (except for bunnies!)

GracesGranMK2 Wed 05-Apr-17 10:10:28

NannyandGrampy, Gillybob and any others, I understand that you are feeling you must make a point but please explain why. I just don't get it confused No one has said anyone may NOT call their eggs Easter Eggs; as far as anyone has made us aware on this thread it just hasn't come up, so please, what are you making your point about?

Skweek1 Wed 05-Apr-17 10:07:38

I'm Wiccan, but to the best of my knowledge every religion has a spring festival and although I don't normally eat Easter Eggs, apart from the ones like egg-shaped Smarties which I like at any time of year. I'm also hooked on Jelly Babies, which this year I've found in rabbit shapes made by Maynards - Jelly Bunnies. If you're looking for eggs for GKs suggest that you buy one of those cardboard refillable ones available from Christian shops or if you're crafty, just make a small nest and fill them with Dolly Mixture, Smarties or whatever. Or call those over-priced "Easter Eggs" Easter Eggs and don't worry about Cadbury. Personally wouldn't buy anything with the Cadbury name anway - sickly and horrible after-taste since they were taken over.

Shortlegs Wed 05-Apr-17 10:03:51

This is covered in the bible. Look under Eggsodus.
