Names never to return?

I was brought up on a farm and we had names for all the sows Gertie or Gertrude was my favourite

Young friends have small babies named, Harriet, Elsie, Effie, Hermoine and Mabel.
Lots of Archies, Alfie's and Bertie's around here too.

I love all those old names. Saying that I think Ada and Cuthbert should be banned...hahaha

I hesitate to say what won't come back my mum is Lily and there are Lilys in my GD's nursery. I wouldn't expect to see a Basil and names like Patricia and Margaret are now old fashioned, but who knows?

I think Ada's lovely. It was on the possibles list for my latest DGC, but apparently didn't suit him

Who would have thought it. I remember it from my girl's anthology as a child. Learnt it by heart, but never realised it was Longfellow.

Lots of Lily's around here too and also a Penny. There is also a teenage boy, who lives nearby, who's called Derek so although not a baby, certainly young. Don't think I can imagine a Gilbert re emerging but you never know.

Apparently my father wanted me called Morag but mother over-ruled him. I can only recall hearing of one Morag and she was older than me. Perhaps it's more common in Scotland?

Gareth Malone's little boy is called Gilbert and I have a close relative also with that name.

My grandad was called Ethelred. Nickname Et. Never heard of anyone else called this.

I haven't heard Eileen or Irene for years.
My parents bought their house from a woman called Hepzibah. There are lots of old fashioned names around here, George, Joseph, Stanley, Archie and quite a few Mollies and Maisies and even an Audrey.

When I was about to go on maternity leave, I was talking about baby names with my boss and he said sometimes you need to see the baby before making the final decision on the name. He said when their second son was born, they looked at him and decided that he was definitely a Nigel .

Have you noticed that most of the names mentioned here are popular with pets nowadays? I met a canine Ernie only this morning, and I already know several Colins, a Baxter and an Archie. Of course there are also Monty Don's Nigel and Lily.
I do know a human baby called Monty too.

Barbara is another not used nowadays..

My dogs are named Lottie and HoneysuckleRose - Hun for short , doubt there will be babies with these names ?

I love all the old names, but the girls I went to school with would have old fashioned sounding names now: Janet, Marjorie, Patricia, Joan, Georgina, Aileen, Dorothy, Penelope, Caroline and Carolyn.

As others say, names only just out of favour (40's and 50's ) will take a while to come back again, while late Victorian names are now fashionable again.
German names like Frederick and Hilda ( my grandparents) vanished pretty much from 1914 onwards , understandably,but when they were born in the 1890's, were the epitome of fashion.
I remember reading Alan Bennett on this subject of names ( years ago) imagining the matron of a nursing home saying to a new patient 'welcome! You're our very first Kevin!'
So, it's really hard to say what name will never come back, my great grandfather was called Rufus (he was Irish) now, will that name ever come back, or is it an Irish name that has never gone away in Eire?

Thinking about it, wasn't William the Conq's son called William Rufus?So maybe not an Irish name.Maybe a common name for anyone with red hair.

Lottie and Maisie are both quite popular current baby names.

I don't imagine my grandfather's name will ever be fashionable. He rejoiced in the name Methusaleh!

He was known as Meth to his friends and when I was a child I always thought his name was Methylated as in the spirit.
