Names never to return?

I've been having fun reading through this thread. Here in Germany there are legal limits on what you can call your child. The trend nowadays (some decades behind the UK, and probably copying the US, where, of course, there is a larger Jewish community) is towards Old Testament names.

Noah, Samuel, Elias (the German form of Elijah), Naomi, Rebecca, Hannah etc.

Names that have become notorious for chav types include my very own Jacqueline and Chantal.

Names that are considered "old-fashioned" here are accepted for children in the UK, such as Emma. My DGD is called Nora. I'm still trying to get used to it.

I think it's good that people are getting adventurous about names - when I was at school we had 4 Lindas in our year and 4 Christines in the year below. All the boys were called John or Stephen. We were only a small school, too! On the German side, one of my DILs's has two Aunt Beate's and the other DIL's mother is called Beate! (Derivation of Beatrice/Beatrix - pronounced Bay-Arter). So a bit of variation is good!

I will forever associate the name Mabel with Wilfred Pickles's 'Have a Go'. The catch phrase,'Give 'em the money, Mabel' is hard to forget.

Yes Bellanonna, Mabel is back. Names seem to skip a generation then emerge again. My mum was Dorothy. I didn't think it would come back but there's a Dorothy (Dottie) in Emmerdale.

I have a Maisie and an Alfie in the family, both just 10. There is also a little Lily May.

There was a Saint Apollonia anniebach.....perhaps she was named for her.

When I transcribe records for a county here I came across Appleonia, this was 19th century when most girls were Mary,Elizabeth,Catherine and Ellen , never came across it again

My Nephew is John, his Father is John as is both of his Grandfathers and Great Grandfathers, he has a half brother called john and two Uncles called John. His Son is not called john

My dad, who was an only child, had over forty cousins who shared his surname: John Brown (pseud), Fred Brown, Arthur Brown, etc. One of these cousins was given a middle name because there were already so many with his first name, and he was always called by his first and middle names, John Henry. It took my dad years to work out that this person with the Henry was also a Brown! #childhoodmysteries

My mum was Edna May too, middleagespread . She was the only one of 9 siblings with a middle name, given that honour because she was born on May 1st.

Water meadow - is Marilyn a made up name? My 1940s school friend Marilyn was the first I'd met of that name, she was Scottish. Isn't Debra just an alternative spelling of the Biblical Deborah?
DJ and Penstemmon - we also have a baby Connie in the family, and a little Grace Lily, and baby Effie.

Have been pondering on this name that will never make a comeback thing, and of course most names will do given time, but surely not Wilburforce or Herbert or Percival. Still, in a few hundred years, why not?

I have a DGD called Connie Rose and a DGS called Stanley . The other 2 are Phoebe Mae and Elliott

My grandma was called Gertrude too - Gert or Gertie for short. It's not a name I like but some people who fancy themselves as trend-setters pick old-fashioned names. I wouldn't bet on any names disappearing altogether.

That is common in Scotland, grandma60. My middle name is my maternal GM's maiden name and my sister has paternal GM's maiden name.

I don't know if this is usual but both my Scottish grandsons have their other Grannys maiden name as their second Christian name. Their cousins on that side of the family (girls) have it as well.

That kind of name is a hostage to fortune!

Sonny and Cher had a little girl they named Chastity. She`s now a very butch young man known as Chaz!
