Expensive, but worth it, purchases?

I bought a cordless Dyson after much thought but don't regret it as I use it more than my heavy vacuum. I bought some Bose wireless headphones on impulse and love them.

I was tempted by the Dyson hairdryer but the price has put me off. Not so long ago I bought a Dyson upright which I like for carpets as it has the beater as well plus a small handheld Dyson which is great for whizzing round daily and for stairs but sometimes I wish I'd bought the full-size cordless one.

My Dyson fan is very quiet indeed shysal as it doesn't have blades/fans to whirr around. I have it on almost every night and it doesn't bother DH one bit and he is a very light sleeper.

I would love to try a pair of proper well fitting jeans. Mine tend to come from NEXT and because I have no bum (well I mean not a sticky out one, of course I do have a bum)they are sometimes a bit too baggy.

My most expensive purchase was a £300 orthopaedic mattress it's nice but I don't think I feel much different to my other mattresses at about a third of the price

I recently bought a Gtech vacuum cleaner; I gulped a bit but it did come with a hand held mini vacuum and free bits for car cleaning ... . Another big spend was on a painting (of hares) which I bought for what would have been my Ruby wedding anniversary. In the unfortunate absence of a husband and a ruby ring, I decided to treat myself to something to mark the occasion and he would have enjoyed it too. I'm saving up for a Porsche (2nd hand)

I have a Dyson floor standing fan and it has been brilliant. As gilly says you can sleep while the fan is running because it is so quiet.
I have considered the hairdryer but really can not justify spending three humndred pounds on a piece of equipment you can buy for £20.

Oh dear ladies... vacuums, lawn mowers!!! Time to spoil ourselves - I love good quality coats and also like nice shoes ... I have no problem in justifying this. They look good for longer and I enjoy wearing them. I don't think I would bother with a Dyson hairdryer myself but do have a Dyson vacuum. We also like staying in good hotels. We didn't have a lot of money when I was young so I am careful in other ways and am not wasteful, but do enjoy having nice things. Enjoy yourselves and happy Mothering Sunday everyone.

When I had my fiftieth milestone birthday I had an Omega Constellation watch for my big present. It was paid for by two years' worth of Tesco's points redeemed at Goldsmith's Jewellers but, in order to have the lovely one with diamonds, my DH paid an extra ever-so-many-hundred-pounds. I love my watch and appreciate it anew every day. It makes me feel like a rich lady! (How shallow am I?)

Many thanks for the info on Dyson fans. I think I will get a floor standing one after reading your comments. In the summer I like to sit out in the sun to charge my batteries , but often need to have a fan blowing on me. The ordinary desk fan I have is rather noisy so I can't stand it at night.

My sixtieth birthday present, a surprise, was a pistachio coloured Kitchenaid Artisan Stand Mixer. I think my DH got it online in a special deal but compared with any other mixer it had to be expensive. So worth it though. It looks like something out of an Art Deco museum and is definitely an 'object of desire' worth every penny. Onis so rewarding.ce again, being shallow and pleased with 'stuff'

I'd love one of those robot vacuum cleaners and also the robot grass cutter. I can't justify buying them as I might think they're useless when I try them! Lidl had the vacuums for around £60 recently but that was too cheap to be any good.

It is to so much the price you pay .....it is how much you wear it or use it. A cheap item worn only once and thrown can work out.....pro rata.....as more expensive than a £100 garment worn fifty times.......
Also.....more costly items are often much better made than cheap items.
A final thought is......cheap clothing perpetuates sweat shops and the danger they present.

I agree with some of you about good shoes. Comfortable feet are sooooo important and the expensive ones are usually leather and let your feet breathe. The most expensive item I've had is my Tempur mattress. Heaven to sleep on. Yes it was about 1K but worth every penny, as I have a curvature of the spine and it moulds exactly to my misshapen body.

I have a work iPad but as I'm leaving soon I will have to hand it back. Definitely want to get one of my own now I am used to having it. Maybe I'll put it on my Christmas list! I can't get over how quick it is to come on and open up emails etc compared to a laptop. Amazing ?

please could any gransnetters let me know if the dyson fan would be good for a conservatory on those unbearable hot days,we cant even open the doors its so hot.

I have a Dyson hairdryer and I like it but it's definitely not worth £300. I love my very expensive goose down pillow and duvet - like sleeping under a cloud!

A John Lewis version of a Vi-sprung mattress, £1200 12 years ago, and oh so worth it! Best mattress I have ever had.

I also love my Bernina sewing machine bought with money left to me by my grandfather when I was 21. I am heart broken because the motor has just gone and after much search on the internet, it is now no longer available, and someone in UK tried to sort it to no avail, it is now defunct.

Anyone out there know how to get hold of a motor for a Bernina Record 730, bought in 1970?

If I can't get one then I shall buy a Juki machine, who now make Bernina, but nowadays they are all plastic and I so love the substantial metal of mine.

Will be forever indebted to anyone who can help me!

Shysal, I agree absolutely about the Gtech vac and hedge trimmer. Both light and easy to use. Wish I could afford the lawn mower.

My other extravagance is the Karcher window vac. Costs around £50 with the accesories but you can find it cheaper, I think the best deal at the moment is £41.99 at John Dyer (?)
Mine was bought with Christmas gift vouchers from Amazon so was free for me.
I hated cleaning windows but this makes the job so quick and easy. Does lots of other things besides Windows. Mirrors, glass top tables, tiles, fridge freezer doors, showers and screens. Car windscreens. Highly recommend.

My extravagance is Lulu Guinness handbags, I buy them in the sale, I would never pass them on to a charity shop like I do if I buy a high street handbag.

As for the Dyson hairdryer, I think a hairdryer is only as good as the person doing the drying, if you can't blow dry your own hair, what's the point?

I really can never understand all the praise that is heaped on Dyson products. I had one of their vacuum cleaners and it was rubbish- it didn't suck up that well and the pipe was made of very brittle plastic and broke easily. They wanted a large of money to send me a replacement so I bought a Henry instead. Nowhere near as expensive, much better suction and it lasted me for years. My daughter bought a very expensive Dyson, against my recommendation, one of those advertised as guaranteed to suck up ALL pet hairs. Again that proved rubbish too.
BTW, my best purchase ever have been my pets.
