Nothing to match Salisbury Plain

Friends are holidaying too far into Wales for an easy day trip for us. They have suggested meeting at the Brecon Mountain Railway. Anyone know it? Worth a visit or can anyone suggest a better meeting place in that area, particularly if the day brings rain. All thoughts welcome. Mr C is Welsh but hasn't lived in Wales for over 50 years and so is a little rusty!

And the depth of soil near Preselli to bed them down into is probably too little to hold them upright?

If raining Cyfartha Castle very near Merthyr, if rain stops lovely walks in the grounds

I have been on trips on the Brecon Mountain Railway twice; I'm sure the views are lovely if it's not raining

I'm not sure of other places to visit if it is raining.

The Royal Mint is interesting

Thank you all. One is claustrophobic. I could hear the agony down the phone when I suggested Big Pit. The castle will do it if needed. Thanks annie. All bases covered. I'd love the railway if it's a clear day. Wherever we go I expect much sitting in a cafe nattering.

I cannot go in a lift, I still don't know how I went down the big pit, I suppose it was my way of paying my respects to the many miners in my family so this took away the fear , my thoughts were of how brave they were , I was so proud of them but wept too because they worked in those places .

And the little children who worked down there too - and the ponies who had no choice either.

One of my uncles was awarded a medal for bravery, he escape from an explosion but went back down to bring ponies out,

My son took his daughters down The Big Pit. He found it very moving to know the conditions his great grandfathers had worked in.

cornergran if raining in mid Wales, Crickhowell a lovely place to have lunch, The Bear Hotel does lovely lunches OR The Angel in Abergavenny.

But in Hay on Wye you can spend the whole rainy day in the dry, all those book shops ?

There is a mountain side for sale near Dolgellau, Cefn Coch, a charity is hoping to buy it . any bidders here ?

No Crickhowell is in Wales, in Powys.Its in the Brecon Beacons Hay on Wye is also in Wales, in Powys.

I don't know why I thought Hay-on-Wye was in Herefordshire, perhaps I approached it from that direction.

We used to approach Hay via the Gospel Pass. I, too, believed it to be in Hereford.

I'll look at the map next time

jalima your geography is fine. Hay, despite being in Powys, uses Hereford as a postal address, in the main.

It's a Post Office anomaly.
