Jo jo bows.....

When my GD was in primary school, she had to have her long blonde hair tied back. It would have got in the way in PE classes and some practical lessons. I can't find the picture of me and my sisters wearing bows in our hair in the 1940s though nothing like the monstrosity in the link. Girls who wore plaits usually had the ends tied with ribbons, but in small bows. Now, how about the school allowing bows but only in school colours. The girls would soon be fed up with those!

I see absolutely no point in having a school uniform if the children only wear it on outings why would you go to the expense of buying a uniform and only put it on a few times a year Sorry butbi dontbget that at all
I showed my 14 year old the picture of the Jojo bows and she said oh that's only little kids wearing them I must say I haven't seen any myself round here (thankfully)

I don't actually thing it's anything to do with bows but the size of them

The bows in Joggingirl's photo of her two granddaughters would be appropriate for wearing at any time but if you look at the ones for sale on E-bay you will see they are definately a "fashion craze" and I can understand why they should not be encouraged by schools. I also wore all the 50s/60s fashion crazes but not to school!! The bows are very colourful and certainly brighten up the class line when going into school but I am so thankful I have a grandson not a granddaughter and don't have to battle with this one. Some of the one's worn by the five and six year olds are very Minnie Mouse and cute but because of their size and bright colours definitely not for school.

Bluebelle - the uniform is simply a sweatshirt - if children can't afford it we make sure they have one for school outings - former pupils donate them.

My point - which I seem to be failing to get across! - is that pupils should be required to wear what is safe and decent and that their education is not impaired by not wearing uniform. It is just a tradition; but schools with no uniforms do just as well as those with uniforms.

And bows are just bows and no big deal!

Not suitable for school. Firstly they would need to be removed for games/PE lessons, which means they could be lost or mixed up. Secondly some girls will spend hours doing their hair anyway, this would make it worse! Teachers have enough to do as it is without having to police which bow is whose, or having to haul girls out of the loo because they spend so long doing their hair.

I asked my GD1 (11) about these bows and she is very keen to have one but'they cost quite a lot' . When I asked if she could wear them to school she said that some girls did have the smaller version black ones with diamonds on!! She thought the big ones would not be good for school!

GD sounds very sensible, good for her!

I think they are awful especially on grown women but i understand why little girls like them.What i really dislike is the way these young girls are being mugged by the makers of these, £8-12 each is a disgrace when they can be maid for pennies.

I ve just read on a local chat page of a young baby dying when the large Minnie Mouse bow slipped over her face while she was sleeping Her mother had put her down for a nap and not thought to take the big bow off

As much as I and my dear GD's love them, I'm fairly sure they are not meant to be worn by babies when sleeping - but how awful for the mother.....? I'm sure she just didn't think about it....
