Jo jo bows.....

Very heated discussion about these on Mumsnet! Apparently the craze results from a tv show called Dance Mums. I don't think they're suitable for school especially as the most coveted ones are so expensive.

They seem to be confined to certain areas of the UK though I expect they'll spread!!

Those luminous socks were called Bobby socks. Originated in USA, like many fads.

I thought 'bobby' socks were just white ankle socks, very American.

We just called luminous socks 'luminous socks' - green, orange, pink, girls wore them and also Teddy boys wore a men's version.

My 2 love them. They spend their pocket money on them (only £2-£3 each). I look across the play yard and sometimes see the bow coming before my (very tiny for her age) DGD . Mind you they are always in school colours of light grey or white.

I wore one to school! I am on the right next to the teacher. My mother used to make my clothes and often made a bow to match my dress. I used to make 'scrunchies' to match my girls' clothes.

I have photos very like that one, shysal Big floppy bows were the norm!

I loved that dress! It got too short and rather tight, so my mother gave it away. I was furious!

I always had a ribbon, and I always came home looking like a scarecrow as this photo testifies.

Oh how i hated the bows and ribbons my DM put in my hair everyday.I had long( past my bottom) black curly hair that my mother loved, everyday on the way to school i pulled the ribbons out then try and put them back in before i got back home, i always managed to look like a mad witch and would swear i hadnt taken my ribbon out.
I think these bows are a bit too much for school. After all wearing a uniform at school gets children used to wearing a uniform at work

i think they're AWFUL and certainly not suitable for school whatever colour they are.
my grandaughters (14 and 11) think they're awful too and wouldn't want to wear them in their hair (both have very long hair).

They are distracting, they are as big as hats. Bloody awful things.

Well I wouldnt wear one unless someone asked me to! But harmless teenage crazes are lovely in my opinion.

Can see why schools ban them though.

Yes, many of us wore bows in our hair as children, and girls still do, but not these giant ones.
As a teacher I'd be worried about the children having their view blocked. We make sure each child can see, placing smaller at the front and taller behind them when necessary. If a girl wears what amounts to a hat in class, what should a teacher do? Her eyes will be at the same level but her total height is increased!
Seems to me it's like wearing a hat in the theatre or cinema, and we know how annoying that can be for others!
Out of school - they look fun and my GD loves them.

When I went to school in the fifties all the pretty girls wore bows in their hair. My mum made me have short hair so it wasn't an option for me. I don't see any harm in a girl wearing a bow in her hair. The craze will only last a few months. Don't sweat the small stuff!

Oh I remember luminous socks. I went to see a Tommy Steele film with my friend and we sat with our feet up on the seats in front. So we could admire our socks and everyone else could too. We lived near London then and every teenager wore them. I went to visit my Grandma in S Wales and a woman in the village objected loudly to the socks. Even having a"word" with my Mam when I wore them on a Sunday

Believe me I very laid back, but when it comes to school I am not. I just hate these bows and they should be kept for "dressing up" at home, to go out with friends etc. Afterall you have different dress codes for different events and I see no harm in children learning this. Same goes for hairstyles as well

If it was acceptable in the fifties for girls to wear bows in their hair. Why isn't it now?
