Did you ever model yourself on your heros and heroines of your youth ?

I can remember as a child being very impressed when I saw an actress whose smile was lopsided. It started in one corner of her mouth, then spread to the other side
I practiced and practiced, and to this day I have a lovely lopsided smile!
(Probably not so attractive on a woman of my age - I expect people think I have medical issues!)

I had a "purdy" cut on my hair for a long time as per Joanna Lumley with a thick fringe and very black eyeliner to copy Dusty Springfield,mum used to made when I tried to take it off and it left black marks on all the towels and flannels in the bathroom.I tried without success to make the black & white mini dress made popular by Twiggy it turned out like a blouse.

I bought my first hipster mini skirt, navy with white pinstripe and a wide white leather belt because I'd seen Twiggy wearing something similar I thought I was the bees knees and it was only about 3 ins above my knee but I felt very daring

Florence Nightingale and a nurse who looked after me when I had my tonsils out not sure if I ever reached these lofty ideals but I did try hard.

I grew my layers out and copied Jackie Kennedy's hairstyle - the plain bob.
Heroine I most admired was Elizabeth Bennet.

I wanted to be Joan Baez and copied her hair, dress and barefoot protests. And I began when I was 12 ( and she was at the married ro Robert Harris stage, post Bob Dylan) much to my law-abiding, quite conservative, immigrant parents' dismay. They could not understand what I was trying to "overcome"( message lost to them in translation).

It continues to this day but I can't sing and play the guitar as well as she does, nor do I have her cheekbones.

I heard a song by her the other day on the radio, and must admit I'd forgotte what an absolutely beautiful voice she had!

Yes. My very beloved Joan. So beloved that DD1, grew up singing Baez songs alongside her nursery rhymes. Now, she does play the guitar and can sing beautifully, so skipped a generation, but I did manage to emulate.

Age has not withered JB.

The first person I really wanted to look like, I was about 8 at the time, was one of The Ronettes, I think one of the sisters who eventually married Phil Spector, so that wasn't a great scenario, but it was her behive hairdo which I guess inspired Amy Winehouse too. In my mid teens Franco Zepherelli's Romeo and Juliet came out and then I wanted to look like the star of that Olivia Hussey, I envied her skin and hair I think. I also wanted to be Samantha Juste who put the records on Top of the Pops, but my mature self would re think that one now 'cos no doubt she had dealings with Jimmy Saville

Like glamma my friends and me used to wear the black eye make up like Dusty. I also wanted to be Cathy McGowan at one point (oh for that hair) and because she met all the pop stars of the day. Then I would go to bed with my kiss curls sellotaped to my cheeks so my hair would be like Lulu's. I really wanted to be like Twiggy and so I did my best - I was a similar shape although not quite so thin. I also deseprately wanted to be Patti Boyd as I was in love with George Harrison

I never aspired to look like her, but Debbie Harry was always an icon to me.

I grew my hair so as to be like Jennifer Gaye

Yes, Jill of the book, Jill's Gymkhana, a slightly unusual heroine I'm sure. She was a little girl who loved ponies but her mother was a widow like mine, so she lived a careful life, wore secondhand clothes and had to work hard to make her way in life. She found herself a pony, learnt to ride it by making friends with a disabled man who could teach her, saved her pocket money for the bits she needed and worked hard to make a success of owing a pony and doing it right. She was resourceful and focused on what she was keen on. Has always seemed a good role model in life!

I went very Jackie O for a while but loved the freedom of kaftans so went hippie

Joan Baez, Cher (in the 60's not now), Joan Fonda when she made the speech in Vietnam (I'm commenting on the way she looked, rather than what she said), Joni Mitchell.

Brigitte Bardot ponytail and gingham dresses in 1956! Short hair after seeing Jean Seberg in 'Bonjour Tristesse'. Black beatnik polo neck about the same time.
Long straightened hair, Indian dresses and sometimes bare feet (London pavements - how could I? Yuk!) in the 70s. Not copying anyone in particular, just generally being a part time weekend hippie!
Saw Joan Baez once at Cambridge Folk Festival in mid '80s, unforgettable, I could hardly believe I was there! I didn't aspire to look like her or like the indestructible Debbie Harry! Wouldn't mind looking like Judi Dench now. I'm not tall enough to look like Vanessa Redgrave!!

I started off very beatnik. Loved Joan Baez . All in black, Very long fringe, black eyeliner. Also went on a few Ban the Bomb marches from Aldermaston to London. Still find it difficult to wear bright colours but still a bit arty ?

I was aiming for the Cathy McGowan look (Who would have thought she'd end up with Michael Ball?) later it morphed into Julie Driscoll, complete with all the painted eyelashes, I did have a brief Jimi Hendrix stage, but as my hair was dead straight it took far too long to frizz it into an Afro with curling tongs!
KatyK I definitely didn't want to look like Patti because I hated her so much for stealing George!

First of all I wanted to be Francesca Annis; she must have been on the tv as a teenager and I wanted to look like her (I still would, in fact, she's lovely)

Or the heroine of my favourite pony book, riding carefree across the Romney Marshes (wherever they were!)

When I was a bit older I just wanted hair like Cathy McGowan or Julie Felix but that was before blow drying and my hair just did its own thing.

How did you straighten yours Elrel? I knew someone who used to get her dad to iron hers but I never tried it.

Deedaa Me too. I didn't so much want to look like Patti as to BE Patti. I always thought George would have preferred me if only he'd seen me. Well he did see me once and talked to me but he didn't seem to notice that I was nicer than Patti !!! I wonder why......
