Job titles that have disappeared

Matron, needs to be brought back to sort out wards perhaps!

The Man from the Pru - used to come round to collect the instalments on the endowments.

The Co-op paid a 'divvie', I can remember going with DM to collect it.

I was a Matron for a time, think they have been brought back in some hospitals. When I was a student nurse Matron was all powerful, we even had to see her to get a pass to be out of the Nurses Home after 10pm.

My Dad was a coil-winder in a factory.(No, me neither.)
His night job was playing the piano for strippers, in London.

Then there were the more shady jobs, such as a bookies runner and the tally man.

I did a Sumlock complemented course at a place just off Oxford St. I still hold my pencil as we had to do when adding up on it!

Comptometer

Milk maid.
Now presumable a dairy worker.

I was a comptometer operator, and trained at Aldwych House, Aldwych, London.
I still have my notebook with notes at the front and test results at the back, and the averages of my results. Somwhere I have a Comptometer pin badge. Sad, moi? but I did enjoy my course with two friends from school. After training, I went to work for a shipping insurance company, until I left in 1963, and yes I still old my pencil in the way we were taught.

Clerk

Is anyone a clerk these days or are they administrative officers?

'Messenger' - Straight from school I worked on the local newspaper - we literally delivered messages to every office/department in the building.....?‍♀️?‍♀️

Char lady

Laundry man. He used to come to the house to collect the laundry which my mum would have ready for him all wrapped up in brown paper and string. The laundry man threw the parcel on to his open wagon and led the horse on to the next house. It was returned in the same way a few days later. Mum only sent sheets and table cloths to be laundered, for the rest she had an Acme manually operated washing machine with a lid and a handle and a mangle on the top. Not such happy days!

Sorry ,Very early in the morning and I was on word association ?

I was called variously PA, Secretary, Typist, Executive Administrator etc. One boss would stand behind me telling me what he wished to express and couldn't understand how his letters were impeccably typed,and better worded than he could do himself - he thought I was a genius!

I had a holiday job in the Co-op office sorting the divi. slips . It was excruciatingly boring. Then another holiday job helping the "Home Sister" in the local hospital---is there such a post now?
