Sorry I misread the title didn't realise it was jobs we had done. downtoearth you were quite right about the knocker upper. Even I am not that old.
I've heard of sagger makers bottom knocker but not sure what the job was.

It's actually saggar not sagger, my mistake. It's to do with the pottery industry (my dad's work) and the containers used for fireing the pots.

Personnel Officer - it's all Human Resources nowadays.

I went to a cobbler this week. Useful people. He is going to lower the heels on a pair of shoes and make the back tighter so it isnt as slippy.

They also cut keys which is perhaps the bigger part of their work there.

Our cobbler appears quite busy.

The shoe repair shop in our village is called 'The Village Cobbler'. He also changes watch batteries and cuts keys.

Cobblers used to be called snobs ( has a different meaning now though) there is actually a cobblers in Wantage called Snobs.This could be an Oxfordshire term ?

Chimney sweeps ( still a few around) and wheel rapper band shutter. ?

I still ask for the haberdashery department (will anyone know what I mean?)
and we still have Haberdasher's Schools!

and we saw Johny Onion Man over from France with his old bike selling strings of onions at a market not that long ago. He kept going back to his estate car to top up as he sold them!

Sorry - Haberdashers' Schools as there was more than one haberdasher!

My mother used to have a Provident lady - she paid for something called Provident cheques weekly. She used to buy our school uniforms with them. There were also Co-op cheques as I recall.
