Smells and memories

I find that smells can transport me back in time more powerfully than any other sense. The smell of road tar takes me back at once to my home village where the village steamroller used to be parked next to the White Hart pub and opposite the canal lock pond where it could get liquid for the boiler and beer for the driver. It's number plate was AA11. The smell of boiling soap suds takes me back to the little kitchen when I was a child, with mum, red-faced from the steam, dragging the wet washing out of the copper and hauling it outside where it was put through the mangle, the soapy water collected in a big enamel bath to be returned to the copper. Dinner on wash day was always cold meat with boiled potatoes and beetroot. Long bars of washing soap were stored on a high shelf to harden in order to make them last longer before being cut in squares for use . What are your most potent smell memories?

Mum used to take me past the gasworks in my pushchair after I had whooping cough.
I had forgotten that, but your post reminded me Auntieflo.
I don't know if it made any difference.

Just one sniff of Kamillosan ointment (used for treating cracked nipples!) and I'm holding one of my newborn DCs. Bliss!

The smell of a coke fire and Mansion House Polish. Mum was the main breadwinner, unusual in the 50s, and dad did a lot of housework including keeping the fire going and polishing the table.

Just reading these has brought back so many memories, a life story in smells, thank you.

When i was young, my father used to take me on the Woolwich ferry. I used to spend the whole time down in the engine room. As I remember there was a viewing area with a brass and polished wooden rail overlooking the engines. The smell of oil, steam and coal brings back those memories. Hence my vof anything powered by steam and probably my interest in engineering.

I have a sister in The Dales, and on a winter visit last year the smell of coal fire smoke in the street took me right back to a very long ago childhood.
Goodness knows how long it was since I'd smelt that.
