Wot eat cupcake instead.
Buy yourself a treat at the same price as a pkt of cigs.
A pot of spring bulbs smell wonderful and you will be able to smell them as nicotine dulls the sense of smell (and also taste buds)
Good luck

katek I must be just too bossy grin - my husband was ratty too when he gave up smoking but I would tell him to stick his "nicotine withdrawal symptoms" where the sun don't shine, because having just seen him through the heart attack, I didn't have anything more to give grin.

In other words, I banned him from being bad tempered around me.

Just seen this. I am an ex-smoker, so know the superhuman efforts you are going through. All power to your elbow!! Or heart, lungs, arteries, and cancer fighting properties! Just look at the benefits.

Good luck Wot! Keep to it- you are through the worst!

"It's been 40 years now and occasionally when I get a whiff of smoke it's still pleasurable."
Same here, Christine, except with me it's only about 20 years. I had tried and failed many times, then had a bad bout of flu and just couldn't smoke, so decided to keep it up when I recovered.
It's like a weight off your shoulders, not having to worry about have I got enough?

Well done wot, it's hard I know. Cutting down didn't work for me either, found I was smoking next week's cigs in advance. I went cold turkey and dieted at the same time. I cheated on the diet but not on the smoking. Apart from the health reasons someone told me that kissing a smoker was like kissing a dirty ash tray so I gave up. It's been 40 years now and occasionally when I get a whiff of smoke it's still pleasurable.
Good luck

I admire you for your efforts to give up, wot. I have never smoked, but DH struggled when he was trying to kick the habit. He thought he had done it in 1982, but he was posted to the Falklands right at the end of the war where he was working all hours and living conditions were pretty awful - and cigarettes were duty free - so it was almost inevitable that he would start again. He did, however, manage to do it after he left the Army, but only by going cold turkey. Cutting down never worked for him. Keep going; no-one is going to blame you for being less than a ray of sunshine!

Could have cheerfully murdered mine when he was forced to give up after his heart attacked him as well. Talk about bad tempered! He used to walk round sucking lollipops then chewing the stick a la Clint Eastwood and his cigarillo. He doesn't look like Clint Eastwood and mean and moody doesn't work with a white paper lolly stick. He's now been free of the weed for 11 years and is def much much healthier. Keep going wot, it will be worth it in the end. Well done for getting to this point. flowers

The smell was a big factor......not as important as health, obviously, but I know smokers smell awful! (Not ladylike, that pong!)

LadyGracie Sun 08-Jan-17 11:56:46

wot persevere it's definitely worth it, I gave it up because of the cost, nothing to do with my health, I enjoyed smoking. I must say though that now when I smell a smoker it makes me realise I smelt like that - not nice! Keep going

downtoearth Sun 08-Jan-17 11:48:56

Glad to hear you are well wot my mum used to say better in health than temper.
My OH is always saying he is going to cut down/give up...not looking forward to the moody bit ..can hear him rolling one now hmm

Grannyknot Sun 08-Jan-17 11:43:33

wot yes it is! My OH gave up when his heart attacked him and the doctors blamed his smoking habit. That was 8 years ago and he is so much healthier and fitter - and smug happier.

wot Sun 08-Jan-17 11:26:41

Thank you! All encouragement gratefully received! I had started to wonder if it was worth the effort to stop the filthy habit.

Linsco56 Sun 08-Jan-17 11:24:20

Well done wot I'm sure it must be difficult. Stay strong and persevere! Good luck

Hi! I just read that thread and thought "No, keep quiet!" I'm struggling to stop smoking (down to one a day, in two halves!) On tablets for it and feeling permanently nauseous which is a side effect of said tablets, so not feeling great. Dragging myself through January; can't even think of anything I'd like to buy with the money I've saved! ? nice of you to think of me. I will cheer up soon.

downtoearth Sun 08-Jan-17 10:00:04
