What presents worked and didn't work for you at Christmas?

All our presents were nicely received and we received some lovely things but for some reason a few of us left some prices on to great hilarity and scuffling about!

Unfortunately the sound blocks that I bought for DGS did not work - but I emailed Argos on Christmas day and received a message today to say that a replacement will be with us on Wednesday morning! - that's good service.

I had a lovely leather satchel and each panel is in a different colour - it is very jolly!

DH had a virtual reality headset, so I am fully expecting him to float off to happier climes at every opportunity.

A bottle of screen wash! V Google for smeary patio doors apparently. Have a rather practically minded friend?

Time for each other. Priceless.

A new Bosch drill-cum screwdriver! I can't be that old after all.
But two things with cartoon cats on and in....my cat died last year so not all that appropriate?

A jar of chutney and chilli jam as well as chilli covered peanuts? I hate chutney.

Everyone knows because I have moaned about it constantly, that I have spent the autumn making jams, jellies and masses of chutney in order not to waste this year's bumper crop. Why then have I been the lucky recipient of 6 jars of special Christmas Chutney, Cranberry sauce, wild berry jam etc. and also 4 jars of honey to add to my groaning larder? They will be hard to recycle/regift until next Christmas due to their seasonal packaging, but will they keep?

A scarf from a nice shop, but unfortunately not at all mad on the colour. I did give some ideas, this was not at all what I'd suggested (I know I sound ungrateful). There is no receipt, and the shop web site says they will only exchange with the actual purchaser. I only see this person twice a year at best, and wouldn't feel right telling them it's not for me.

I will have a go wearing it and see if it grows on me. Such a shame.

My alternative Christmas would be : just go out before, buy yourself several lovely items, then all meetup for a meal/drinks, and show each other what you've got, and admire each others' taste, exchange good wishes/hugs/love.

Obviously not for small children, but for adults,I know you lose the element of surprise but that CAN be a good thing.

DH received a small heavy parcel, which was a bag of walnuts and a mechanical vice for his workshop?

A bouquet of flowers every month for 6 months starting in January!

My other half supposed himself this year which caused huge hilarity after a very traumatic afternoon spent in A&E (tripped over their dog and fell with pots in my hand banging my head on the door and cutting hand - I'm on blood thinners so all quite distressing for everyone) - he had repeatedly asked me for a list but apart from the slippers I'd ordered for myself there was nothing I needed or wanted. In desperation last week he ordered two mystery gift boxes from an online store and wrapped them up without seeing the contents so had no idea himself what was in them! One was a techy box of things like a mini vacuum, tiny book light and USB charger purse - the other has some bag clips, candle and chocolates amongst other bits - all in all very good and so funny as I opened them and he kept saying it's a pile of rubbish - bless him

Sweetest present was the slippers that were chosen by DGS2. One says 'wishing on a star' and the other has a star on the front. He told his mummy that he had to choose them because they had a star like John John ( his angel brother). It was my birthday on Christmas day so double presents. Received a £50 voucher for my favourite yarn store and a years subscription to my favourite knitting magazine, both from DH and he is going to give me the money to renew my Senior Railcard. I also received a lovely jewellery set from DD1 and her family and beads for my Pandora bracelet from DD2 and her family. Now waiting for a new year present as DD2 is due to give birth to first granddaughter a few days.

Well, we're on diets and received what we have received from my husband's children for the last 20 odd years - biscuits.

I have to say, I was a bit miffed this time.

I got an ew camera for a forthcoming holiday but I did help DH choose it. Haven't had presents from DS and DiL yet. They will expensive and probably not what we want apart from the calendar with the GC on.

I refuse presents.but did receive a home made card of a one eyes snowman who is winking at me still from my GDs........I don't need stuff...but a wink is not to be declined at any time of year.

DD's ex joined in the festive fun - they're very good friends; just can't live with each other! - and he bought me an M&S......Well! When I unwrapped it I just couldn't stop laughing which cause great hilarity to all because I don't laugh a great deal [which says something about me I think!!!]. On the bottle it says something along the lines of being a room freshener, a body spray AND a linen spray AND DD looked it up on line and it said something about being suitable for vegetarians!!!! How can one bottle of liquid cover such a variety of situations??? I nearly choked with laughing so much whilst DD's ex looked on slightly bemused. It doesn't seem so funny writing it down but it still makes me smile when I think about it. The children thought I'd gone mad - well, madder than usual

Not so much us, but our son. We always buy him a big desk diary, which is kept for him by the people who care for him. On the outside I always put pictures of his favourite activities, along with photographs of the family. Inside family birthdays and addresses are duly noted, and it is a favourite with him, since it is his conversation piece. He brings it with him when he visits, and the first thing we have to do is write in the date for the next visit, and then we can sit and ready all that has been happening. He can't wait to open this, and every year it is a joy.

A large hamper of ........suet-based bird food. The birds are already showing their appreciation! Also 2 pairs of snazzy diamond patterned warm and cosy tights from the 'other' grandma. I am wearing a pair at the moment.

Both my DD and my DIL are teachers. I sometimes feel they pass on to me presents they have received from school. I try not to be offended, it is the giving that counts but this year I have had enough. I was given a gift, which I do actually like, but it is blatantly recycled. The firm stopped producing this items many years ago, so it is indisputable. I would now like to find a diplomatic way to suggest we stop buying presents for each other. It is finding the right words. I put a lot of thought and effort into presents for the individual.. The recycled gifts are recycled again as raffle prizes. It just seems a pointless exercise. Don't get me wrong, I believe firmly in recycling. I used to share my gifts with my Mum, but I never gave them as a special present, she just shared in my good fortune, mostly chocolates. Lol.
