Things that break your heart......

....a young family member in the depths of severe depression making the effort to write to his brother to thank him for the support he's given; he also enclosed a gift that had obviously been chosen with a lot of thought. Such a small thing for most of us to do, but for him it took a huge amount of motivation and reduced the recipient (and me) to tears.

Much is written about bravery, but I honestly think that anyone who battles (I use the word deliberately) with depression and other mental illnesses is brave beyond words.

What brings tears to your eyes?

From about now until December 14th is over......

I lost my sister to cancer this year. Christmas cards are moving me to tears as so many friends are putting lovely messages in saying they will be thinking of us all this Christmas. I don't feel very Christmassy yet but both she and I have grandchildren and it's hard to stay sad when I've been invited to see school nativity plays etc. But that's another thing that moves me to tears!

Am welling up just reading all these posts, what a softy! I cry at the Christmas adverts, Strictly when the dances are beautiful, choirs singing, our DGD1 empathy and concern over my DHs health, people being kind, people being unkind - well you name it! Am in the WI but can't sing Jerusalem for the life of me with a lump! I just love the expression your eyes are too close to your heart, never heard it put like that before. I'll have lunch with you Ruby, would love to see a flash mob, might even want to join in ?

Lona Thu 08-Dec-16 16:19:11

Lucky thanks for that, I would love to see a flash mob.
I cry at anything these days and I appreciate things more too since I got older.
Often I just feel overwhelmed with love for my family, and that makes me weepy! No hope for me smile

cry at lots of things! Buckets when reading Me Before You! Music often makes me cry. Remember going with my own kids singing carols round the streets near their school and crying when I heard those childish voices and saw those innocent little faces. They are all grown up now!
Posts on GN often make me cry and of course the news - such sad things these days that we can do nothing about.
And as for the OP - as a past sufferer of depression I can appreciate the tremendous effort it took to write that letter - but it is a good sign that things are improving.

Morgana Thu 08-Dec-16 19:19:33

so sorry grannypiper.flowers

Lona Thu 08-Dec-16 19:22:40

I'm so sorry grannypiper that is very sad.

bellsisabelle Thu 08-Dec-16 19:23:51

A mum in the queue in front of me in the cafe today. Adult daughter was obviously quite mentally challenged. Mum calmed her by drawing her close, cradling her head, and calling her "my little dearie". So sad. So beautiful.

kittylester Thu 08-Dec-16 19:57:15

Sorry, grannypiper, that is sad. Two of my daughters have had miscarriages, one 3, but they both have 2 beautiful children now - there is hope.

Deedaa Thu 08-Dec-16 20:57:49

The thing that has upset me most in the last couple of weeks is the story of the premature baby left to die on her own inthe sluice room. The thought that anyone could just dump a living baby - even if she wasn't viable is absolutely heart wrenching.

Smithy Thu 08-Dec-16 21:11:08

So many things big and small make me cry. Yes Deedaa, that was way beyond sad.
But that flash mob video was brilliant Lucky - have now added seeing a flash mob to my bucket list, whether I'm lunching or not.

Judthepud2 Thu 08-Dec-16 21:54:11

So sorry to hear that Grannypiper. sad We have experienced 3 miscarriages and 3 failed IVF in the last few years from DD1, DD2 and DDil. So distressing for them and sad also for us as Grans/Grandads. The what might have been.

Shanma Thu 08-Dec-16 23:45:55

I never cry anyway, it doesn't alter anything.

grannyactivist Fri 09-Dec-16 01:50:54

You're absolutely right Shanma - crying doesn't alter anything. C.S. Lewis famously said: 'Crying is all right in its way while it lasts. But you have to stop sooner or later, and then you still have to decide what to do.'

For me it's often a response to sorrow and frustration and it's a healthy one I think. (Has a quick look on google.) Yes, crying is actually good for you according to various researchers.

My mother says she only ever remembers me crying once as a child - I used to bottle up a lot of hurt and pain. Now I am comfortable expressing those sorts of emotions - I've been doing a lot of crying recently and even though it doesn't actually change things I feel it's an appropriate response to my circumstances.

grannypiper Fri 09-Dec-16 05:23:39

thank you all for your kind words. It has left me with a heavy heart but a sigh of relief as my DD came very close to losing her life during her last pregnancy due to pre-eclampsia and our DGD had to be brought into the world 7 weeks early. My DD is upset but my SIL is in bits, he knows that they wont ever have a baby together (they have a child each from past relationships). I am 400 miles away and feel helpless. But onwards and upwards and i am blessed with 2 beautiful, healthy DGC so cant complain. Thank you everyonebrew cupcake

kittylester Fri 09-Dec-16 07:04:46

I think crying is good ga and I disagree with C S Lewis. I think crying helps clear emotions out of the way and enables one to decide what to do.

I'm sure you are being a huge help and I hope you are looking after yourself too. flowers

DaphneBroon Fri 09-Dec-16 08:06:08

Very sad for your DD,SIL and you grannypiper . I have no words, but I can remember the feeling and I just wish you all the love and support a family can give.

kittylester Fri 09-Dec-16 08:09:49

That made me have a tear or two Db, it always does!

grannypiper Fri 09-Dec-16 08:45:48

Thank you DaphneBroon for your post flowers

Christinefrance Fri 09-Dec-16 08:46:15

Lovely sentiment Daphne, so sorry for all the families experiencing problems at the moment.

PRINTMISS Fri 09-Dec-16 08:50:43

So many sad stories here, and I do think it is good to cry if we remember someone and are just sad for the fact that they are no longer with us to enjoy Christmas or any other special occasion. A few tears will often make us feel a little better and do no one any harm.
I am often moved to tears when I think of our son - he is still with us, but sometimes, when I am in a sombre mood I just wonder what would he say if he could talk - would he really say "I love you Mum"? because that is what I would like to hear.

Anya Fri 09-Dec-16 08:56:03

Grannypiper so sorry (((hugs)))
