Things that break your heart......

....a young family member in the depths of severe depression making the effort to write to his brother to thank him for the support he's given; he also enclosed a gift that had obviously been chosen with a lot of thought. Such a small thing for most of us to do, but for him it took a huge amount of motivation and reduced the recipient (and me) to tears.

Much is written about bravery, but I honestly think that anyone who battles (I use the word deliberately) with depression and other mental illnesses is brave beyond words.

What brings tears to your eyes?

Seeing my Dad suffering, he has Alzheimer's and I know there is nothing I can do but visit him in the care home be with him and talk and hopefully somewhere deep inside him he knows I'm there. That breaks my heart every minute of every day.

watching the film I Daniel Blake did it for me --and most of the audience. there is so much cruelty in our society today and we turn away or gloss over it. My 2017 resolution is to speak out. It takes courage and people don't want to hear the message but I will do my best.

Children suffering through illness or anything other trauma always upsets me. I instinctively want to make it all better. Children in Need has me in floods every year. And the suffering of innocent children in war zones. ?

Yesterday.... sobbing into my yoga mat as the teacher put on a Kenny G cd... it reminded me of my daughter (we love Kenny G) and family in USA where I am 'not wanted' this Christmas.............

Judthepud2 Thu 08-Dec-16 10:15:37

luckygirl I have just watched the flash mob video. How wonderful! I love the Messiah and the Hallelujah Chorus is the definitive Christmas song to me. I would love to have been there. Thanks for posting that.

Souperkiki Thu 08-Dec-16 10:22:08

That sounds a good resolution to speak out Blueskies

For me it's a lone voice singing Once in Royal David's City. When he was about 10 my DS and I had been Christmas shopping and as we approached our house he started singing this carol, just as the street lights were coming on. It sounded so beautiful it stopped me in my tracks. I then carried on walking just behind him with tears rolling down my face. When we got to our door he turned and saw I was crying. I told him that his singing had sounded so lovely I couldn't help it. He was shocked as he hadn't even realised he was singing smile

Whenever I hear that carol or just think about the memory I get a big lump in my throat.

Ninathenana - I know all too well how that feels as my daughter is in the same position. Ex son in law is with his second new partner now, she has three kiddies already and they had a baby together earlier this year, she has now announced she is due to have a little boy in April next. My daughter is upset as he refused to let her have any more children (they have three kiddies together) plus he takes delight in accusing her of all sorts of things, latest is that she has reported them to the Social Services (complete trot, he must have upset someone else or he is back to making things up again). I hate seeing my daughter so upset, not to mention what it is doing to my grandkiddies.

Thanks Luckygirl,
That brought tears to the eyes of even a cynical atheist such as me!

Shanma Thu 08-Dec-16 11:10:20

Rubylady , once again on GN just because I do not happen to like the same thing as some others it is an excuse to be rude. I am not a miserable person, but you are rude.

Disgruntled Thu 08-Dec-16 11:12:16

Thank you so much, Luckygirl that was wonderful! Got me!
Did anyone see any of the We Are Here - don't know what to call it, not a flash mob exactly, but similar, I suppose?

Grandson2008 Thu 08-Dec-16 11:15:03

Oh kittylester I am with you when I hear I will always love you especially by Dolly it always gets me. I think its good to be sentimental better than being cold and shut off

Some years ago my 16 year old nephew died of leukemia. He was treated for two years before he died. During treatment, he saved up his pocket money (and his family gave him a contribution) as he said he wanted to treat his mum and dad to a meal out. When he had enough money, he bought a lovely card and gave it to his parents with the money. Inside he had written 'I want to treat you to something nice to say sorry for all the worry I have given you over the last few months.'
sad What a wonderful boy.

grannyactivist thinking of the young man in your family and hope that given time he will recover. He has reached out to his brother, which may be a start. Mental illness is often so much harder to deal with than physical though think and hope this is slowly changing. Sending my good wishes to him and to you.

silverlining48 Thu 08-Dec-16 11:22:09

katyK yes, a wonderful boy.

KatyK Thu 08-Dec-16 11:25:26

I agree ga that anyone suffering mental illness sis brave beyond words. I used to be of the 'pull yourself together brigade'. Life has taught me that it's not that easy.

Disgruntled Thu 08-Dec-16 11:40:57

Maybe there are two threads here: the news is heart breaking and any suffering is heart breaking. There are things that make me well up, like Once In Royal David's City (that must have been amazing, Swanny) Jerusalem - and before my daughter was born, the sight of a crocodile of nursery children used to choke me.

foxie Thu 08-Dec-16 11:42:11

Learning that you've become a great great grandmother on Facebook is heartbreaking enough and then being denied access is devastating. There are all kinds of cruelty which you just have to accept

seemercloud Thu 08-Dec-16 11:43:40

Thank you lucky girl

Barmyoldbat Thu 08-Dec-16 11:53:10

Please lets be nice to each other even if we dont like their postings. I am sorry Rubylady I can only think that the difficult day you had and the stress of being smiley akll day was just a bit to much for you and you took it out on Shanma. sending you some flowers to cheer you up

Grannee Thu 08-Dec-16 11:55:07

Swanny - your post moved ME to tears!

kittylester Thu 08-Dec-16 12:11:40

Hearing about your nephew Katek reminded me of DS apologising to us for being a nuisance when he came round in intensive care because we had flown to Japan to see him. sad

So many things can bring me to tears. I just cannot look at any clips depicting cruelty to animals. I have to look away. The same when I see suffering on the faces of those poor families living in war zones or in parts of the world where they starve or are stricken by diseases. The unfairness of it all hurts.

Some songs make me cry. I am having Danny Boy played at my funeral - I want a multi-Kleenex send-off. grin

Yes, young children singing carols always sets me off too. My heart hurts so much when my grown up children suffer. My sons have suffered horribly this last year and I feel so helpless, but their pain is my pain and I do cry myself to sleep sometimes, praying that life will be good to them..that they'll endure.

My darling granddaughter (3) had me in tears a few weeks ago.She was tiny when her Daddy became ill and died. I was sitting on her bed reading her a bedtime story recently which mentioned a Mummy and Daddy Owl going to sleep in a tree...She looked straight at me and said "My Daddy was poorly and he didn't get better. He is asleep in the sky now..." I had to look away and blow my nose. Whenever she drifts off to sleep as I sing to her I want to cry. She is such a sweet, innocent thing. The preciousness of her touches my heart.

I still cry at the loss of my dear Mum. She died in 2000, at a good old age but I miss her so much - her cheery nature, unconditional love and words of wisdom were my strength when my life was hard.

I like to think I am slightly cynical but I am not. My insides are melting as I get older and the outer shell is trying to hold it all together. confused

rosesarered Thu 08-Dec-16 13:47:13

Day6 just reading your post made me well up!
what an awful time you have had, do hope things will get better for you all.?

Teddy123 Thu 08-Dec-16 13:47:41

The only event where I can recall sobbing was at a dear friends funeral many years ago. She was early 40s and the funeral was held in the Lady's Chappel at St Albans Cathedral. I held myself together until they started singing All things Bright and Beautiful ....

Apart from that event no tears! Is there something wrong with me. A rhetorical question ?
