Gransnet today....Just my opinion.

Don't want to completely hi-jack the 'Christmas in four words' thread so I've started this one. Feel free to shoot me down. I don't do flouncing. grin

Some time ago, the 'What does Gransnet mean to you?'thread developed into a 'Bring back jingl' campaign. Despite this, it has become clear that we are not entitled to an explanation as to why she is still shackled to the naughty step

We inhabit a goldfish bowl which must be respectable to the outside world looking in on an ageing cyber community. Old people are only expected to be curmudgeonly in books and TV nonsense. Manufactured threads about growing old disgracefully are perfectly acceptable so long as they fit the approved template which has been set by people who are NOT as old as we are.

All well and good until a situation causes a ding-dong. We must be ever mindful that Gransnet is a business relying on advertising revenue. Swearing is tolerated on Mumsnet because it's acceptable in the young and feisty whereas the 'one foot in the grave' club have to leave all that behind and remember our opinions don't really count any more.

The political threads are argumentative because that's politics. You can't put a straight jacket on a well informed if opiniated point of view which is as it should be. Folk who hide behind the sofa when all hell breaks loose should know better than to get caught in the cross-fire.

So....We're allowed to moan about Brexit, complain about our aches and pains and chat about telly dramas/adverts/music. We willingly offer support to complete strangers even though it often comes back to bite us. I'm not the only one who can spot a set-up. Above all, we must remain bland!

There were two members who railed against this. One is sadly no longer with us and the other has been kicked into touch for being too outspoken. Unsurprisingly, they rarely saw eye to eye but that's LIFE!

I'm off to put the joint in the oven. I might even start a thread about it. hmm

Only joking!

Trisher maybe you didn't read too many of JBF's posts.
She made frequent reference to the fact that she was in the last chance saloon and towards the end of her tenure as Gransnet's favourite poster, started a thread actually baiting Cari to ban her.
Perhaps you could enlighten us as to what form of mentoring/ counselling/ support JBF might have responded to?
confused

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Mon 28-Nov-16 11:30:37

trisher

Cari Thanks so much for your reply.
Can I suggest that it would make GN a much happier community if we could have a little more openness and in some ways this may even help with your job.
So if someone is under 'warning' would it be possible to share this with other members of GN ?(with that member's permission of course). This might result in a support network who will try to help the poster and encourage them not to enter into discussions where they are being baited.
And I am sorry but one of my posts was deleted- it was a rather off-colour joke about Jimmy Saville and I was told that this was because a moderator on duty at the weekend was inexperienced and aired on the side of caution. I accepted this as a reason. Can you not accept that sometimes GNHQ gets it wrong?
NanaandGrampy maybe I see a corner more clearly than you do?

Yes, there will be times when we don't get it right (not many grin) If we have a new member of staff they may well err on the side of caution at the start, but on these few occasions we have been more than happy to hold up our hands and explain.

We do post openly on the forums and we are happy for posters to share information with each other but it wouldn't be appropriate for us to do so.

Gransnet is not as interesting as it was in the early days. In the past I have seen many new posters chased off Gransnet by the same few posters, who unfortunately weren't banned. Maybe they should have been reported, though they had a few fans who jumped in and stuck up for them when they had been hounding some unfortunate poster. They certainly got away with a lot more than Jingles ever did.

trisher Mon 28-Nov-16 11:44:23

jane oh you are probably right- just thinking there seems to be a concept of 'them' and 'us' and the only way I know of solving this is for the 'them' to become a lot more open and transparent. Otherwise once this is established things tend to get worse.

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Mon 28-Nov-16 11:50:54

One last clarification...

Drinking to solve problems is clearly never the answer.

As it happens I don't actually like wine (unless it's mulled and then absolutely not at this time of day)

My personal preference for drowning any sorrows and stresses is Zumba but it's not necessarily practical in an office situation (or a good look to be merengueing through the desks). So I will await the next class and give it all I've got.

NanaandGrampy Mon 28-Nov-16 12:00:53

I only got as far a merengue....mmmmmmmmm meringue.....................

Candlefran Mon 28-Nov-16 12:47:40

Walking does it for me

Candlefran Mon 28-Nov-16 12:49:06

(I meant, dissipates stress. And crossness)

Candlefran Mon 28-Nov-16 12:49:54

(as opposed to wine)

Christinefrance Mon 28-Nov-16 12:51:24

Back again, Cari drinking will not help solve the problem but does make it easier to bear. Do we need to be so PC , part of the fun of being older is to kick against the traces.
Trisher give it up others have opinions and it's not just your highway.

Luckygirl Mon 28-Nov-16 13:17:59

Jingl knew exactly what she was doing - she baited HQ and dared them to ban her, which they did. I don't think anyone, least of all jingl herself can grumble at that! I am sure she is loving being one of the subjects of this thread! grin

I find gransnet interesting and at times helpful - I have learned a huge amount about a wide variety of things - we have posters who initiate debate on areas of their interests and thus expand mine, for which I am grateful. We have science links from one poster, political ones from another and it opens my eyes to new ideas. I am all for that.

If someone wants to use the site for some sort of provocation and attention-seeking, then everyone else has the option to ignore this, unless it sabotages a useful and interesting thread just for the hell of it, in which case it is a bit of a pain. Better to just leave the thread for a while and wait for it all to die down.

Cyber-bullying is a well known phenomenon and it is for that reason that I think there should be good manners in the debates, as I do not want to go down that route. Polite does not mean bland. We have got so used to the abysmal quality of politicians' debating style - I think we do better than that.

Candlefran Mon 28-Nov-16 13:30:32

? Poor Cari can't win. (To seek comfort in booze or not to seek comfort in booze)

Eloethan Mon 28-Nov-16 13:37:45

I don't understand why this topic keeps being resurrected. jingle effectively dared Gransnet to ban her and had no one to blame but herself when they did.

If some people find Gransnet bland and boring there is no obligation on them to continue reading or contributing.

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Mon 28-Nov-16 15:00:25

Yes I posted the bit about booze after complaints that we were encouraging people to seek solace only in alcohol.

Can it be tomorrow now? Please?

Anya Mon 28-Nov-16 15:02:32

Why should Trisher 'give it up'?

Who the fuck are you ChristineFrance to tell another poster to reign her views in?

If I remember correctly, Trisher, like myself and many others on GN, held a position of responsibility before retiring. We are not accustomed to being treated like silly children and are used to having our opinions listened to. We don't quietly go away when told to, even if others are more acquiescent.

Ana Mon 28-Nov-16 15:06:07

Cari, please tel that it wasn't people on here who were complaining about the alcohol post/s...hmm

thatbags Mon 28-Nov-16 15:12:24

References to cake seem to have dried up too, ana hmm. I suspect zero sense of humour in some quarters.

Jalima Mon 28-Nov-16 15:17:28

So if someone is under 'warning' would it be possible to share this with other members of GN ?(with that member's permission of course). This might result in a support network who will try to help the poster and encourage them not to enter into discussions where they are being baited.
hmm thinking about this one and I'm not sure.

Do you think it could start a trend of GN becoming more a series of threads about members' disputes and personality clashes instead of disputes and clashes on threads about more objective topics?

Perhaps you could enlighten us as to what form of mentoring/ counselling/ support JBF might have responded to?
janea None whatsoever, she would have done her own thing anyway!

Candlefran Mon 28-Nov-16 15:18:15

Well, it's quite right that Cari should endeavour to keep everyone in line re alcohol. She is in a position of great responsibility. #noboozersalliwedongransnet

Candlefran Mon 28-Nov-16 15:19:34

Can I please rehash that hangtag.

#noboozersallowedongransnet

Jalima Mon 28-Nov-16 15:20:28

I was getting squiffy-eyed trying to read the first one Candlefran

confused

Candlefran Mon 28-Nov-16 15:21:03

Hashtag. A hangtag would be going too far.

Christinefrance Mon 28-Nov-16 15:22:37

Sorry Anya thought I was entitled to my two penn'orth as well. Apparently that's just for the favoured few.
By the way ' reigning ' is something the Queen does, you want me to rein in I think .

Ana Mon 28-Nov-16 15:23:55

Would there be an Announcement every Monday morning? 'The posters under warning this week are xxx and yyyy. Please be as kind and supportive as you can to them during this difficult time'? confused

Jalima Mon 28-Nov-16 15:24:45

You'll be banned if you're not careful Christinefrance

Behave.
