Sometimes there is just no escape from it.
After the Asian tsunami a dd was working in Aceh, Indonesia, and after she'd been there a couple of years we went to visit her.
We met her in Medan, a big Indonesian city I'd never even heard of until then.
She recommended a particular restaurant to eat in that first night - guess what, there was a massive TV with a Manchester United match on!
Previously, while Dh was based in Jakarta for a while, I went to join him for a holiday in the area. We flew to Sulawesi, to a fairly (to me) remote place where there was a lovely beach hotel right on a peninsula looking over the Celebes Sea. There were very few guests - Indonesia had recently been through massive political upheavals - and the poor barman was dying to practise his English on us (dh did speak some of the local language) - and what did he want to talk about? English football! Man U etc. Dh did his valiant best, but I swear that if he just about knew who David Beckham was, that was it. I felt sorry for the poor barman, who evidently thought anyone English would know all about it!
