It's funny how the English mangle words of "foreign" origin. Eg Delia Smith pronounces balsamic as "ball-samic". Sounds all wrong to me.

My real block is - American surnames. I never know, when it looks like a European name, if it's going to be different!

French names like Cormier (Kor-me-ay) are pronounced Kor-me-yer, as they wanted to be more accepted.

Eggplant, but we also have flipping words like yoghurt and hummus that I get lost on with the spelling changing. Think hummus use to br spelt hummous...am I going totally barmy with this one?

According to the website 'howjsay' and another audio dictionary, it is oh-bergine.
