Worst Christmas song.

Seems here that we are talking about two dofferent types of product...... Christmas songs which all the stores push and Christmas Carols which are shunned as not p.c. I did NOT hear many voices for the former

Driving home for Christmas, makes me cry and wish I was driving in Australia with my DD at Christmas time.

I love Gaudete, by Steeleye Span.

Gaudete (gow-day-tay) is on a carols from Kings cd that I have.
Am I the only person not to know Fairytale of New York song? Probably.

I'm with all those who love fairytale of New York great song. Can't stand Slade or Cliff Richard whatever they are singing. love David Bowie so drummer Boy is OK with me. October/November is way to early to be playing them anyway should be banned until December.

Perhaps not everyone learned Latin at school or sang in Church choirs, DaphneBroon...

My DH and are are coming to the end of a three week holiday in Florida. Yesterday we went to a local open shopping mall in brilliant sunshine. We wandered around and the muzak was all Happy Xmas songs including All I want for Christmas us my two front teeth. We had a wonderful time joining in the choruses and doing a few little dancing steps. The best part was linking arms and singing out loud "I've got my love to keep me warm ". Just as well there were not many people around. Lol But just shows you can still have some impromptu fun in your 70s. We leave on Monday but after Thanksgiving there is a radio station which only plays Christmas songs. You would be amazed just how many Christmas songs there are.

My favourite Christmas song is Bruce Springsteen's 'Santa Claus is coming to town' but it is rarely on the radio. Although I am a fan of Michael Buble, his version of 'Santa Baby' drives me mad because of the clumsy way they have changed the words to allow a man to sing it!

I'm in the minority then, not liking the Pogues? Maybe it's me but a Christmas song where the theme is to call one another names? Not my cup of tea.

Thankfully I do all my shopping online so no shops for me. I put on my own music for Christmas, be it hymns, children singing or cheesy pop. I might even abstain altogether and stick to Gilbert O'Sullivan!

My worst Christmas song ever is "So Here it is Merry Christmas." It reminds me of when I was a youngish mum struggling with money and always having my domineering mum coming to stay for Christmas. Whenever I hear it I feel miserable and sorry for my younger self.

My favourite song is Fairy Tale of New York and Drummer Boy with some priests and the chap from the Pogues. Also like La Divine Enfant and The Holly and the Ivy.

Most of these classic songs were originally in sentimental movies of the late 1930 and early 1940s. I can't help but like these old musicals.

Perhaps the reason so many people like the Fairytale of NY (featuring the late, great Kirsty McColl as well as the Pogues!) is partly because of its less-than-festive lyrics?

On a more uplifting (?) note, anything Christmassy played by a brass/silver band, preferably the Salvation Army, (but I am not picky,) will instantly improve my mood and put me in the Christmas spirit.

I have never heard of "gaudete". Not as a word, or in a carol from Kings, or in a pop song. I have never sung in a church choir. I know no Latin, apart from "seize the day" and actually I cannot remember off-hand what the Latin for that is.

But I do love the irreverance of Fairy Tale of New York.

Love the playing of the Sally Army. Especially Christmas carols.

Candlefran Not having ever heard "Gaudete" makes me think you might be a tad younger than a lot of us on here. Showing our age we are.

Candlefran It is a medieval carol but I hasten to say none of us heard it the sixteenth century.
