What to call the UK?

Robthefox forms here in N. Ireland are a bit different. There is a box for Irish as well as British. We also have to indicate our perceived religion for EO monitoring ?

You cant be the united kingdom simply because when Scotland leaves you'll have only one Kingdom,England,Wales is a principality and NI is a province ,so you'll need a new name .When Scotland was dragged screaming into the "Union of EQUAL" KINGDOMS " it was so you could use our King James the sixth ,it wasn't a union of PARLIAMENTS until 100 years later and there were riots on the streets in Scotland because we didn't want it,our "aristocrats" decided for us ,a lot of us STILL aren't happy as its clearly not a union of equals .We only want to be in control of our own affairs and we couldn't do a worse job than the Westminster government does now

I wouldnt call myself english as i have an interesting mix in my background although as a family we're from Cumbria but we have irish spanish scandinavian scottish blood in the mix so what actually is english? The area we live in has passed back and forward between scotland and england so many times over the years the lines are blurred. In fact the area i live in now is called the debatable lands and im married to a man from one of the scottish reviver families ??

IMHO I can't see Scotland leaving UK/Great Britain as the reality is that they will not automatically remain a member of EU but will have to re-apply & re-admission is not guaranteed. Also the oil price has been falling which was where the Scots were looking to for income. Without money from England it is unlikely Scottish economy could survive without many changes.

I may be very wrong & this is only an opinion, I sincerely hope Scotland, Wales & N Ireland remain part of the UK

I have never been to Ireland but according to my DNA analysis I am 69% Irish. I don't know which nationality to claim now.
Should there ever be a need to chose an official name for the no longer UK ,there is already a popular misconception that England = GB and NI. Hence, the Queen of England ( I have been watching Victoria). So whatever new name is chosen, I expect that the world at large will continue to speak of England, the largest country meaning also Wales and NI.
Does this matter? Yes, it does. Especially when people who actually live in the UK refer to it as England.

Legs55 misinformation OIL was always a bonus for us ,OUR budget has balanceyear on year for a decade,or more.We dont have borrowing powers so NO DEBT either only what Westminster has borrowe dand we ,if we leave would be exppected to take 10% of that BUT we also are entited to 10% of ALL assetts adnas thats in Trillions that would demolish the debt.On the oil prices,they have always fluctuated and despite ebeing told during the Scottish referendum that it was"running out" there are still new fields being discovered weekly and new licenses sold by WM ...mind you Denis Healy told us it was running out way back in the 80's ???The governor of the BOE has stated that Scotland has one of the strongest economy's in Europe ...almost half of the UK food and drink export figures are from Scotland and Mr Carney puts our "worth " at over 3 TRILLION pounds THATS before that devision of asstes by the way.I do wish people would take time to research the Independence cause ,its NOT about the SNP ,its cross party ,the SNP are only the vehicle to get us it.In "reality" LEGS55 ,there is a growing opinion that we will be members of the EU as we HAVE been for over 40 years and ALL who live here are EU members .I'm afraid I am of a different opinion from you and sincerely hope and pray we WONT remain part of the UK which is the most unequal union and hasn't any interest in Scotland or the Scottish people .Before I am accused of racism ...this is NOT about the English people its about the Westminster governments ,past and present

The debatable lands and the borders are so interesting Hippywitch64 and their history with Scotland is fascinating. Newcastle changed hands a few times and the Scots were not liked here for a considerable time. However we did vote to stay in the EU, so if Scotland did we might want to join them.

Doubt it would ever happen, I can't see the majority in Scotland voting to leave the UK.
Not everyone there loves the thought of being a tiny country ( population wise) going it alone.

But, as a bit of fun trisher the flag could be white (background) with a red rose for England, a red dragon for Wales, and a red shamrock for NI.

There was no mass "majority" voting to remain and many feel lied to by Westminster when they said a vote to leave would be a vote to exit the EU - er, hasn't the Brexit vote just sealed that?

the Saltire would have to go wouldn't it. No - the Saltire (One of the oldest recognised national flags in the world) will not be going anywhere. WE will keep it. Similarly there will be no problem re a name - WE will still Scotland.

If this jars or sounds odd to GNetters who do not live in Scotland then note that it also jars when we Scots or Welsh are spoken of as 'other' eg. When WE leave the EU, WE will need a new flag. WE will still have Wales & NI where the WE obviously does not include all of us in the UK

As to nationality, I believe it is a matter of where you feel you 'belong' irrespective of your genes or where you were born. Scottish Nationalism is CIVIC nationalism i.e. for all who choose to call Scotland home.

It's not an anti anything. People are allowed to express their opinion (there's still free speech ATM - though for how long given some of the utter drivel being spouted about making being anti-Brexit a crime of treason ...and that's from a so called politician and don't get me started on the latest rants from the UKIP mob about abortions etc)

I'm Scottish and while I've nothing against the English (Welsh or Irish), I would rather remain part of the European Union and have a say in things than be a tiny perocial island with delusions of grandeur.

So I'm hoping for a REALLY cold winter before the next referendum (and yes, that IS me being sarcastic for those of thinner skinned variety).

HA HA ! where I live in France anyone who speaks English is English !! I once tried to post a letter addressed to someone and put ECOSSE (French for Scotland) .....La Poste informed me that no such place existed and I must cross it out and put Royaume Uni !!! ,,,,anyway, seemingly with the number of people trying to get in, UTOPIA might be a suitable name ! (unless you were born there, that is !_
