What to call the UK?

Scotland would be a separate country joined by land to the United Kingdom.

Not 'the rest of the United Kingdom' but The United Kingdom.

The United States of America has a land border with Canada, part of the United States is contained by Canada, and the United States of America has a land border with Mexico to the south.

Just the same as it would be if Scotland was a separate country.

why not just keep calling it England - why break the habit of a lifetime?

Continuing to use the term would mean all the dictionaries would need to be amended as they currently list Scotland as part of UK. Interestingly enough apparently the full title by 1921 Act of Parliament is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

I really hope Scotland never leaves we're right on the border in Cumbria and feel more scottish than english tbh my doctors in Scotland as its the closest and brilliant.

I have from time to time to complete forms for Foreign Governments on line. Frequently they request one chooses from a list one's nationality but do not offer British, English, Scottish, Irish or Welsh but simply "United Kingdom"! Seems like we Brits are not the only confused ones!

They aren't British as we know it nowadays - but geographically mainland Britain, Ireland and the islands are The British Isles.

In fact the closest genetic relatives of the Irish in Europe are to be found in the north of Spain in the region known as the Basque Country. I've decided that if Scotland and Northern Ireland break away to stay in the EU (lucky things) then the UK will become EW!

I believe the EU wants to deal with the UK - but will they want to deal with EW?

I was born in England but really wish I wasn't. I think England is a complete embarrassment these days, not unlike Trump.

I was going to add a comment to this thread but following the nasty comment from Skullduggery i don't think I shall bother.

It's always going to be Great Britain to me.
And I am proud to be English, no matter what others might say.
But I love Scotland and hope it stays in the U.K.

yes Trsher you are rightabout the meaning of united but we would still be a united kingdom as we would be united with Wales and Ireland. LadyGracie, I would mcve back to Wales if I could, we seem to wantto return to ourroots as I was born in Wales

Yes Jalima to my knowledge the Irish are descended from the Gaels (themselves immigrants ) who originally came over from what was known as Galicia, in Spain. However, I think these were a branch of the Celts, just a different one from the Welsh/Cornish/Breton variety.

We are all a big mix of races anyway. I'm half English on my mother's side. And they were descended from the Normans (immigrants!)

My warning re: British Isles to include Irish Republic is well meant, not a joke. If you are ever in Ireland, just better not to.
