A word from my dim and distant past. Any of you here still have fun? If so what is it? Be interested to see the replies smile

my DH was great fun to be with, saying daft things & doing daft things, I do miss him very much (over 3 years now) but I still enjoy life, moved to a new area, made new friends. Been out to Lunch today with our local Community Care Group (started going after 5 weeks in Hospital last year), nice Lunch & good company, lots of laughs. I came home happy & look forward to each month, also go out for Afternoon Tea & a few trips out. smile

How do you define "fun", to me having a good laugh whether with friends, family or on your own (my neighbours must think me quite mad if they hear me roaring with laughter at some of the comedy programmes hmm

Anything which puts me in a good mood is fine by me, my lovely DGS telling me he loves me, listening to his enthusiasm tonight describing his costume for "Halloween Disco" tomorrow - he's going as a "zombie" what else for a 6 year old !! smile

YES! I go out of my way to have fun. (In fact I'd like to change my GN name - does anyone know how to do that?
I went to Bowness a couple of weeks ago to see a new play about Beatrix Potter and to celebrate an 80th birthday afterwards, that was fun. I'm going to see Liz Lochhead on Monday - that'll be fun. It's easier to have fun with others, but I do enjoy solitary walks, not sure if they'd count as "fun".

We are a family of nerds and we get a lot of enjoyment out of Trivial Pursuit, Scrabble and the like when we're together.

Something I would describe as "fun", and which I can do on my own is spending a morning in the kitchen baking delicious cakes and maybe making bread or a pizza.

Anything where you don't have to worry about how long you're doing it is fun. But working full time, I somehow never seem to catch up with things. (Neither at home nor at work)

I'm making a New Year's Resolution to (a) make time for myself and (b) spend it having fun.

Yes with what I probably shouldn't be doing it at my age - riding a horse. Adrenaline, fresh air, fear, companionship with horse and chatting to people younger than my kids makes me feel good. And happy. And it is fun when it goes right.

Fun's official definition is "enjoyment, amusement, or light-hearted pleasure". Perhaps those who say they enjoy lots of things but never have actual fun are changing the meaning of the word? Coffee with a friend is fun, chatting with the grandchildren is fun, watching a good comedy film is fun, anything that takes you out of yourself, brings a smile to your face. A bit like happiness, perhaps the harder you seek it, the more difficult it is to find? smile

Good post RAF I agree with that.So most of us do have some fun ( although reading a lot of the threads you wouldn't think so.)

granfromafar Wed 19-Oct-16 23:14:50

Yes - Had fun the last 2 evenings. Last night went to a brilliant local production of 'Arsenic & Old Lace and tonight had good fun (and exercise) at salsa class.

pamhill4 Wed 19-Oct-16 23:16:10

Nope. ? Being a grownup is
H-A-R-D ?

Shanma Wed 19-Oct-16 23:50:46

Phoenix I don't think it is an odd question to ask, why would you think so? I am not confusing it with general pleasure/happiness. I can, and do find pleasure, and happiness in many small things. For example tonight I had just finished washing up when I heared the Geese flying over. I went outside and it was just light enough to see them in their V shape, a lovely sight. I can take pleasure in nature, in eating a yummy cake!, many things, but I wouldn't exactly say I was having fun.

I am not sure really how to define it, I suppose it is different things to different People. To me being in a Choir or bridge club would be my idea of hell on earth, but I can see that some people enjoy it. I will let you know when I find it because at the moment it seems very elusive indeed

All the time. With my grandsons, all under four and finding their feet in the world, with all the comic slips and trips and giggles that involves, with my friends, meeting up for gossip and laughs, with my family, all blessed with daft senses of humour and enjoying noisy get-togethers, with my mad cat. Life's good and yes, I know I'm lucky and I'm immensely grateful.

rubylady Thu 20-Oct-16 08:12:21

I have fun, laughing at myself. It saves other people doing it.

I'm quite funny too, but these days I laugh at my own jokes, wandering around the house, like some sort of mad woman.

I do do some stupid things at times so that makes me laugh. I play "who gets the brownie" waiting in the doctors. (From the film Notting Hill). I always think I win, as I am usually struggling to breathe as I get there. Then one day a guy walked in with only one leg. He obviously stole the brownie from me, but then a woman with an oxygen tank and tubing turned up and I declare her the winner that day! Not out loud, obviously. It's probably my dark humour from being a nurse coming through. hmm

BBbevan Thu 20-Oct-16 08:28:06

rubylady I have read several of your posts over the last year and realise that you don't have it easy. But I think you are a real positive lady and one I would like to meet

Bellanonna Thu 20-Oct-16 09:24:04

Hear hear

Im68Now Thu 20-Oct-16 09:42:10

Idea of fun is different now, I,ve noticed that alot of funny things happen each and every day but at our age that's it.

DaphneBroon Thu 20-Oct-16 09:52:40

That is so totally depressing Im68now it may be the truth for many of us, but what about lunches out or coffees at Garden Centres, Silver Screen film showings, visits to and from the grandchildren, the luxury of spending an afternoon reading a book?
Any or all of those will lift my spirits if I let them and god knows I see enough of the inside of the NHS with DH.
PS you need never bored in a hospital waiting room with a Kindle/iPad and free hospital wifi.

NotTooOld Thu 20-Oct-16 10:51:12

Not sure, actually. Was thinking along the same lines only the other day and noticing that i never now wake up with that feeling of anticipation for the day ahead, in fact more of a sinking feeling really. I get enjoyment from seeing friends, family, grandchildren, going shopping etc but fun, hmm. Actually, as someone above mentions, my DH is not all that keen on fun, so perhaps that's it. TBH I do wonder if it is more fun for women when they are with other women. My sister and I, or my daughter, usually have a lot of fun when we are together. Keeping the DHs happy is another matter. Do others feel the same?

BlueBelle Thu 20-Oct-16 11:29:33

Shanma I ve been thinking like you I don't see a lot of the wonderful things in my life as 'fun' but beauty, wonder, pleasure, fulfilment which is what prompted my personal answer .....FUN is a different thing altogether, it's letting your hair down, coming out of yourself, being in a situation of giggling stupidity so no RAF for me coffee with a friend is a pleasurable experience but not necessarily 'fun' unless of course one of you does a stage trip and you fall off your chairs laughing, again you quote watching a good comedy to me that is entertainment but not fun because I m not personally taking part in it ...so I think it's totally down to interpretation

gillybob Thu 20-Oct-16 11:38:22

Fun? Oh how I remember that. Whizzing up and down the lackas on the back of my friends motorbike. Dancing in my bedroom with Donny Osmond watching from the walls, Sneaking in to see an 18 film with tons of grotty makeup on, then having to wipe it off before I got home.

These days "fun" is very different. Gardening, playing football with my little grandson, an occasional family meal out, a rare weekend away. Just simple things to please a very simple mind

Of course one persons idea of fun can be another persons idea of hell.

nanaK54 Thu 20-Oct-16 13:21:59

I feel genuinely sorry for those who find their lives are lacking in fun.
I work with children aged 3 and 4 so lots of fun to be had with them
I also have fun times with DH, sons and their families
This thread has been a good reminder to me to count my blessings

Jane10 Thu 20-Oct-16 13:27:43

If you have too narrow a definition of 'fun' you're not likely to have much! I liked Elegrans definition. Things that lift the spirit.
Wild laughter and falling about is not my idea of fun these days.

rubylady Thu 20-Oct-16 18:36:50

BBbevan and Bellanonna Thank you so much for your lovely compliment, although I am totally boring on meeting me, mousy brown hair, grey clothes, a bit like John Major on Spitting Image really. wink

I've had a wonderful fun day, one in which nothing has gone right. I am going to wrap myself in the bubble wrap which came with a bath seat (which didn't fit my bath!) and sit still and not move all night. Or I might just roll around the floor in my bubble suit and pop all the bubbles, now that would be fun! grin

gillybob Thu 20-Oct-16 18:39:44

I have a fantastic mental picture of that rubylady and that really does sound like fun!

Crazy lady grin

rubylady Thu 20-Oct-16 18:46:02

Who are those men in the white coats at the door? Please no, I'll be good. grin

vampirequeen Thu 20-Oct-16 23:44:21

Oh Rubylady that's a brilliant idea.

We took a group of 80+ ladies to Blackpool today. DH suggested he take a photo of them on the prom with the sea in the background. Before we knew it they'd all climbed onto a two foot wall (God knows how....some of them can barely walk) because an ordinary photo didn't seem enough fun. After the photos were taken it got even funnier as although they'd got up OK, getting down was another matter but with a lot of squealing and bum holding we got them down grin

vampirequeen Thu 20-Oct-16 23:45:16

Sorry ladies who were all 80+ years old lol
