land line

My son has no landline. Makes it expensive for me to ring him. I have a pay-as-you-go mobile so don't get 'free' minutes. But I manage to keep in touch with texts and emails. Not ideal though.

We've just changed our provider. it is cheaper and the broadband is much more reliable. I am not sure if I am supposed to say who it is so pm me if you want to know.

We are with BT for our broadband and wouldn't want to change so we are stuck paying for the landline its not ideal but its the price we pay for a quick reliable internet connection. As we both use it quite a lot with laptops, ipads, phones and smart tv its worth the cost to us.

Our landline provides phone and wifi . We have mobile phones . DH 's is from orange same as the landline. They often ring to offer a better deal- somehow I think they know when we start looking for other providers( cookies may tell them) our landline was off for a week or so with wet getting into the cable. The whole area was out but the wifi still worked and we were given a months rental free. Not sure if it's worth anything but stopped DH from getting too irate.

We have everything through talk talk. Land line, broadband and mobiles. It was a very good deal at the time, much better than BT.

hildajenni it might just be our area but my daughter is with talk talk and her internet is very unreliable and sometimes slow it is a good deal cheaper but she is always complaining about it which is why we stick with BT we very rarely have any problem with it.
Is it reliable as well as cheaper where you are?

We have virtually no mobile signal here so the landline is our main phone communication.

Can you even get Internet without having a phone line? Even in the city where my daughter lives she had to have a phone line to get internet. Might be different in London, I guess, where you get cable etc.

Same here, Sue re the mobile reception, have to hang out of the bedroom window even to answer the phone and ask them to ring us on the landline!

We're with Plusnet for landline and broadband, very happy with them. They are connected to BT, but cheaper and much easier to deal with, not that we have reason to contact them very often.

I hate my mobile phone, hardly ever take it out of the cupboard, so definitely need the landline. But my daughter tells me we need the landline for the computer as well, so it will be staying.

I am pretty much locked in the past. I think mobile phones are the spawn of the devil and don't have one. I think I mentioned once before on Gransnet how I was stopped by a chugger in Darlington, where I was living at the time, who wanted me to make a donation on my mobile. I told him that he had unfortunately picked probably the only person in the whole town who didn't have a mobile phone. He called me "a fucking liar".

Absenthusband has a mobile and absentdaughter texts him if there is a change in childcare arrangements. Absentgrandaughter#1 texts him when she wants a lift home from school. I stick to the landline. If absenthusband pegs the bucket before me I shall probably have to give in and buy one of the damn things. (One more reason why it would be best to go first!)

Paying for 3 landlines I know how much it costs! My work line is connected to the broadband and you can't have that without the phone - the other line is simply our phone number we've had for 30 years so wouldn't get rid of it. We pay for line rental, bb and tv in our apartment and the cost is really high - as we don't live there but do need the bb when there I've asked if we have to have the phone which we've never used - answer is yes. Once we've sold the place that will be a big saving!

I have come to the conclusion I don't really need a landline either be but still keep it for business calls etc
Do any of you use FB because that's how I talk to my children and friends away There is a phone or a video connection which you can use to make calls free, obviously you are paying for Wifi so not really free but there is no payment on top of your wifi connection which you have anyway I speak to my son and family in New Zealand and daughter in Ireland and a young friend in Zimbabwe My son recently told me they are considering getting rid of their landline They are really redundant and I do wonder why I am paying for one but then there is just that small need

My tv, broadband, phone package with Virgin Media would be more expensive without the landline than with it!
It is fibre broadband so doesn't need the line.
I think that while it is still expensive for some people to ring a mobile, a landline is a must.

I've read so many horror stories about internet connection stories that it's always seemed better to stay with BT. Plus I can latch onto BT wifi without cost wherever I am, as here in the wilds of Scotland.

I am with phoenix I am also with Plusnet for landline and broadband. I was with AOL before and they were the pits. I am very happy with Plusnet. I have a mobile but only really use it in an emergency.

We had Plusnet because they were cheaper than their parent company BT but the Internet was very weak in my study which is quite a way from the router so when BT had a really good offer we switched back to them and it is a lot better. Didn't know you could have wifi without a landline.

DS didn't have a home phone but kept losing his black mobile phone and TV controller on his black sofa. He got a home phone so he could use it to call his mobile, guess what colour he got!!

We have poor mobile signal in our village and our house is granite so we have no signal at all in the house. We generally communicate with family and friends on WhatsApp.

We are moving later this year into a new build flat. At the moment we are trying to decide wether to have a landline put in. I hate talking on my mobile so rarely use it for calls, but hubby nags me to use it as calls are free. Not sure what we will decide to do.

Another BT for everything user here, although I've got Virgin cable laid to my new place. Why do I stay with BT? Cos it all works seamlessly for me. The time I'll shop around for another provider is when it doesn't.

We use TalkTalk for landline (free calls all day, every day exceot for a few numbers), broadband and TV. Internet is fast, hasn't dropped out or slowed down all the time we have had it ...and I recently rang them to say we were going to change suppliers when the contract expired in 2 months time. They fell all over themselves to give me a better deal!

For those who have a poor mobile phone signal in their home but are connected to broadband using wifi, most of the mobile operators are starting to offer 'WiFi calling' if you have a suitable handset. It is very simple to set up, it's not an app but built in to the phone operating system, you just enable it. It means you can use your mobile to make and receive calls as normal, even though you have no mobile phone signal in the house. If you go out of range of your WiFi router though, the call will drop. As to needing to have a landline when you access broadband, it depends what's already installed in your house to connect you to your broadband and landline provider. In most cases, copper wire to the house carried landline calls and when broadband became available, the same copper wires carried that too. Broadband packets and voice calls both use the copper wires but are segregated and split off in the local exchange. So you can have one without the other but both share the same wire into the house and all the equipment for both is available, the service provider just has to turn it on. New builds can have optic fibres into the house in some areas. In this case, access to the existing (landline) telephone network is not straightforward and requires extra equipment to provide landline facilities but you should get amazing internet speeds! I know very little about cable providers. I keep seeing TV adds for Uswitch, has anyone tried this and did it go smoothly?

I haven't read through this thread so forgive me if I am repeating what others have said. Yesterday we had an electrical fault, it was about 15 hours without power. We would have been lost without our landline as all the calls we made would have been very expensive on a mobile as we do not have unlimited use. My H can't use a mobile anyway. Of course with power out we also had no broadband so the email option was out.

You will need to pay for a landline for your broadband to run on, but don't get tied in to high prices. It is a complete pain, but a month or so before your contract runs out (put the date in your diary to remind you) ring up the company and say you are leaving them, you can't afford it any more. Don't accept their first offer, keep going, and you will get the price down by almost half, might even get the landline rental for free. The companies rely on people renewing without checking.

We have a contract with Virgin media for TV, Internet and landline, when I asked to have landline removed they told me it would be a more expensive package without it included. They've got you over a barrel, all you can do is leave them.
