I think I've been here from the beginning. I defected from The Other Side.

How many of you were around then and what memories do you have?

LullyDully Sun 07-Aug-16 20:17:58

I joined in May 2011 too . I did have a break when things got a bit hairy but glad to be back. Been back about a year or so.

Greyduster Sun 07-Aug-16 20:21:32

I can't remember what year I joined in my previous incarnation but I was member for a few years and then it all got a bit too "intense" and strident, so i decided I'd had enough. But, big sigh, here I am again. I love it, can't stay away.

Nelliemoser Sun 07-Aug-16 20:22:37

What I really did not expect on here was the greetings, good wishes and general celebration and welcome that every new baby gets on here. I thought all these seasoned grans would not turn a hair at such news.

Lupatria Sun 07-Aug-16 20:25:24

i've been a member for something like four years. a friend of mine [now unfortunately passed on] told me about the site and so i had a look.
it's been quite helpful during the years and i have a chuckle now and again at what people get up to.
keep it up girls [and boys] i love to have my gn fix every morning after breakfast ................ and later on too via facebook.

I have just joined, and this is my first post. I do look at the posts and find that as a 61 year old granny, a lot of the comments are very helpful to me as I share many of the difficulties and problems posted. Thank you!

kittylester Sun 07-Aug-16 20:38:37

Can I just say that I would never join something called nansnet so just think what you would all have missed. grin

etheltbags1 Sun 07-Aug-16 20:48:21

I started in 2013 under another name, I made great friends with other posters especially Hollydaze who has left and Rosequartz who has also left. These are the most memorable friends I made we would exchange daily mps. I have learned many new things especially not to fear getting older. Xxxx to you all

I've been a member since the beginning, heard about GN on The Today prog on radio 4 and decided to join. My very first forum. I posted quite a bit at first but have had a few difficult years with family stuff which I couldn't share - lots of court dates and residency hearings, finally settled in our favour. It was very hard not being able to share with all my new friends and so I've lurked much of the time only posting occasionally.
I too remember the Christmas conference call, I was so excited and put on my Christmas hat and earrings, we recorded a Christmas carol but I can't remember which one.
Also, the many days of worry over Greatnan going missing and the sadness when they found her.
I found solace in reading all the posts from other GNetters who had also lost contact with their GC - fortunately our situation was resolved and my heart still goes out to all those who still miss their GC.
I've had lots of laughs, some tears, won some very nice books and toys too. I don't always agree with posters but it is always interesting to read their opinions.
I'm looking forward to much more sharing and caring. grin

Welome, Lizzie1955, you'll enjoy it here! I'm a Maggie1955, so we have something in common! You'll see me banging on every now and again about the whereabouts of my state pension grin

Maggiemaybe Sun 07-Aug-16 22:37:03

Yes, Nelliemoser, I like the way every new baby is welcomed on here. I've had three new DGS to announce since I joined and everyone has been very kind each time.

May 2011 - first day. I'd love it if GNHQ trawled through the archives and put up some of those first-day threads!

GadaboutGran Sun 07-Aug-16 22:59:19

May 2011. How many still on here went to the Google Hackathon?
I met Greatnan in Nelson in 2013, a few months before her death. It was GNetters who raised the alarm & made people sit up & take notice so that a search atarted & thankfully her body was found before the snow fell. Some of us are still in contact with her daughter who was so grateful for the practical help & support from GN. The power of IT connected Grans!

I joined soon after my first dgd was born at darling daughter's suggestion. That would have been in 2011 as well.
I now have 2 dgds and one very new dgs born at 5.10 am on Saturday morning, weighing 8lb15oz!

annodomini Sun 07-Aug-16 23:45:20

I have been a member almost since the beginning. I remember being welcomed by notsogrand and glassortwo among others. I have made a number of friends, including our much mourned Greatnan whom I visited twice in her beloved French Alps. Maybe I don't post as often as I once did, largely because I've probably said the same things several times already.

annodomini Sun 07-Aug-16 23:47:56

BTW, how many here still remember our first Halloween party? I think a certain person ended up spending the night in gaol and we all had very high-powered broomsticks. "Fings ain't wot they used to be."

Candelle Sun 07-Aug-16 23:59:16

Well, well, well!

I had absolutely no idea how long I had been with Gransnet, so checked my registration details. I thought, 2012, or perhaps 13 but am amazed to find it was only June 2014, just over two years.

I am now trying to assimilate if that means the site is so interesting that I feel quite at home or that the time has dragged and it just feels an awful lot longer.....!

I enjoy using Gransnet and very much hope it will keep its vibrancy, camaraderie, helpfulness and sense of humour.

Galen Many congratulations on the new addition to your family!

Great news, Galen! Congratulations to you and yours. flowers

I too joined in May 2011, under a different guise, after reading an article in the Times. It took a few days untiI I was confident enough to post - I had never done anything like this before, very scarey! I remember the carol 'concert' when we all miraculously warbled along together - hilarious; obviously it was so good that we were never asked to repeat it. grin. I had just met Marelli when a week later I was suddenly widowed. The support I receive from people I had never met was amazing and helped me through some very dark days and then, as GA mentioned in her post, we had a meet-up at my house and many friendships were well and truly born. The 'Scottish Grans' forged the way and have been joined over the years by others as far flung as France and Devon. We have been to concerts, the ballet, eaten in many varied hostelries, travelled en masse to Newcastle and to Darlington for Absent's farewell bash and had some serious scientific education from Elegran! There have been many highs and lows over the years, the saddest being the loss of Greatnan when as a 'community' we all pulled together in an effort to find her. Apart from a few inevitable spats, Gransnet seems to go from strength to strength and long may it continue.

I joined about ten months ago and was very attracted to such a well read, articulate and supportive membership. After a few months I unwittingly upset someone by offering an unpopular opinion and was so trolled I was going to resign. However, the lovely monitors of the site gave me a new username and I am a little less outspoken now. In 'real life' I find myself in the same situation as frankness is not valued socially as much as tact and I find 'virtue signalling' almost impossible if one is expected to repeat and agree with that with which one cannot condone and silence is almost as offensive as contradiction. Writing gives the few seconds it needs to employ tact.

gillybob Mon 08-Aug-16 07:25:26

I have been here since the beginning too . May 2011 . I was still in my 40's then ! Blimey so much has changed in such a short time .

Grannyknot Mon 08-Aug-16 07:25:51

I've been around since 2012.

I mostly have fun on GN, met some very nice people in person, never been trolled, not changed my username, never been told off by HQ. grin I'm a bit more circumspect with my posting than I was at first, mainly because I don't fancy my ramblings turning up in print or on Fussbook.

I sometimes wish GN membership was a bit more diverse.

Sheilasue Mon 08-Aug-16 07:44:01

Just a few months didn't realise it had been going since 2011

Bellasnana Mon 08-Aug-16 08:26:22

Joined in October 2013. Like others, it was totally out of character for me as I am not a 'joiner' of anything as a rule.

It was an article about being a long-distance grandparent that piqued my interest as my only granddaughter lived in the USA, so it was comforting to find others in a similar situation.

Since then I have had many ups and downs, including being widowed last year, and have had nothing but kindness and support from many lovely Gransnetters.

Have also met a few who I now consider my friends, and enjoyed a fabulous cruise thanks to Galen.

I don't post much but check in most days to see what's new.grin

petra Mon 08-Aug-16 08:47:49

GrannyKnot i sometimes wish GN membership was a bit more diverse
Speaking for myself, I know I'm very different to most members on here. I think there are about 4 members that I'm on the same wavelength with.

Gagagran Mon 08-Aug-16 09:10:37

This question of more diversity is interesting. What do you mean by diversity though GK?

We seem diverse to me in terms of age, religion, politics, location, family situation, education. Do you mean ethnicity? We have no way of knowing about that but it seems to me that we are fairly diverse on all the other categories I have mentioned !
