We had a Hall committee meeting last week and were discussing our fundraising events for the rest of the year, including our Xmas Fayre. One of the members said that she had been approached by a village resident who was complaining bitterly that we hadn't advertised last year that we had people in costume (elves, princesses etc) including some animal outfits. Her child is autistic and can't cope with animal costumes. She also said that panto should have advertised that they had a panto horse as her child was upset.
Now I know from my voluntary work that the focus for service users with additional needs is 'normalisation'
(horrible word), which means many service users are encouraged out of the day centre and into hobby/activity groups in the community. I work in the theatre with a performance group of additional needs adults some of whom are significantly affected by autism.
The feeling of the meeting was that we can't legislate for everything and it would ( obviously didn't)
