I have been a member and regular contributor to GN since its inception, many of you will know me as Pompa.
I have always tried to be helpful to those that need it where my skills are appropriate. I have always been compassionate to those in trouble and always tried to inject a little humour into my posts.
I am not racist, feminist or any other form of ist (perhaps a bit of a pessimist now)
In all the years I have been here I have not knowingly been reported.
But I have now been reported ( I guess for racism because of my humorous thread in the Gardening forum regarding immigrant Spanish slugs.
GN is no longer the great site it used to be, it has become very unpleasant on many threads, dominated by a few posters.
Many GNers are now afraid to post for fear of verbal retribution.
Humour that is in the least edgy is condemned by a few.
Please, please will those Gners that want GN to become the fun site that it was again please speak up.
I am now leaving GN, I'm sure that there are those that are now cheering as they have won, but to the rest of my friends,
Love
Pompa
It's hardly a surprise with all the stress Ana
Oh no. Being pounced on and torn to bits by a mob of sarky GNrs isn't a raw deal is it? Lol!
Cba with this anymore.
This wasn't about the OP kittylester. The posts seemed to have wandered away from the original OP - as they do - and JA posted and linked to
www.iflscience.com/brain/no-youre-not-entitled-your-opinion/
The article was talking about people taking offence because their opinions are not taken seriously. Stokes, the author of the article says "You are not entitled to your opinion. You are only entitled to what you can argue for.” (That's the person JA quoted saying that not me)
It seemed to me the whole article that JA had quoted was about people not understanding debate or argument and being affronted when their "opinion" didn't win the argument. It also seemed to me that JA was using this to attack an entirely different group of people, "those who are offended and are easily 'hurt'" because of personal remarks.
I do not think this particular article does back this up.
Now, I can over explain to the nth degree if you keep asking me about it but I do think this has been done to death.
Is anyone really reading all of this?!
Can't make head or tail of that article. Sounds crackers to me. [shrug] I don't know where people dig all that stuff up from.
"Those who think they are entitled to not be offended and are easily 'hurt' had better not read this. Others may enjoy it"
I can't get my head round that bit of ja's post. Doesn't seem to make sense. Genuinely
But don't bother to plain! Please!!!
explain
I'm so glad it's not just me. It might be the sun but I developed brain fog as soon as I tried to read that article.
Exactly!
It was practical who started the "Out Thread". I don't see any flouncing in her OP, just a desire for some support that might not have been appearing (to her) on other threads with the same referendum theme: what kitty said above.
It also seems to me that, having expressed their argument in favour of an unargumentative referendum thread that those, like me, who lost that argument then continued to contribute to the thread with an complete acceptance that they had lost the argument about having a non-argumentative referendum thread. I certainly did because I don't have a problem with losing a debate.
I can't remember the details, but I think I posted some links and some précis (what's the plural of précis?) of the links' arguments as if it was just another argumentative thread about the EU which, by then, it was.
FFS jinglbellsfrocks give it a rest!!!
JbF It is an interesting article but it was written by a Lecturer in Philosophy at a university as an introduction to new students. I was surprised JA quoted it as it has nothing to do with people getting upset with personal remarks and all about constructing and defending an argument and to recognising when a belief has become indefensible. As I say interesting to me but I would think only a few (very few
) others.
I am not sure if I am going to contribute anything to all of this or not.
But I get offended by swearing. And you can imagine how often I see and read it every day, everywhere!
But there is no recourse, and I have to put up with it.
Not ever sure what my point is really.
even not ever
jenty!!! What on earth is that in aid of?
Has someone taped you to your computer and taken away the off switch?
I got as far as 'it's not enough to have opinions, you need to have arguments to back them up'. Then - totally lost.
GG, I do know that JA posted a link but that doesn't alter the facts that prompted the OP to start this thread or various others to open other threads to try to get away from nastiness - or to find likeminded people.
Jenty, try to play nicely! Surely, that is the point of this thread!
I suppose my point is that I dont judge people for it. A lot of people do not even realise there is a problem.
Plus, where would that leave GNHQ and everyone else, if people put in complaints all the time. No one would get anything done.
I must admit boredom does kick in about two thirds of the way down. (of the article)
So are you trying to say that you didn't report the slug thread, obieone, even though its title contained a 'sweear word'?
Yawn!
I don't see it as "nasty" for someone to report to GNHQ something they think is outside the rules or general sense of what GN is about Kittylester. I think it perfectly reasonable that GNHQ make a decision about that and make a suggestion to the OP. I find coming onto the forum and saying you are leaving rather manipulative. I have no idea why whoever reported it did so but it is part of the forum that you have the right to do so and the moderators appear (because the say so) to prefer this way rather than a row on a thread.
I have no idea what other "nastiness" you refer to as it is your view of it not mine. All that is just my opinion. I have no evidence of any of it except that GNHQ prefer things to be reported and have no intention of defending this view - it is mine and no one is expected to agree
I really wasn't that interested in the OP but the link did raise my interest.
No, of course I didn't report it!
If I reported everything with swear words in it anywhere at all, that is all I would be doing with my time!
Obieone indeed you would
I was a bit puzzled there for a moment ana ! We're all allowed a senior moment or two.
But seriously I'm amazed this thread is still going. Let's all get a life.
Yes kitty really odd. Anyone with guts would have defended their viewpoint. Just wondering though whether I would, following such a backlash. Maybe I wouldn't. But it wasn't me !!
