What can I say to my husband (who is furious)?

He has just come home from shopping (struggling from the town centre, up the hill with shopping bags) and walked past the local food bank centre. He saw two women come out with bags of shopping, straight into a taxi.

I am trying to think of some reasons why this might have happened, but struggling.....

I can see his point. Not much you can say really. confused

Perhaps they are not on a bus route? Or the buses don't run frequently, I don't know I just think a taxi is a luxury, but may be that is my mother's indoctrination as she would walk or bus it and I do the same.

Jenty61 Mon 06-Jun-16 15:39:13

perhaps the taxi driver was a relative or it could possibly have been cheaper for the two women to get a taxi home rather than a bus or it could have been something the food bank provides for those with no transport....food banks do not just dish food out to anyone its the doctors, health visitors, schools and social workers who identify people in crisis and issue them with a foodbank voucher. This entitles them to receive a foodbank parcel of three days’ nutritionally balanced, non-perishable food.

peaceatlast Mon 06-Jun-16 16:04:16

Maybe, jenty61. I do hope that is the case.

Lona Mon 06-Jun-16 16:04:39

Maybe they had a medical problem.hmm

Jenti you are right . Food banks only give to people who are in crisis and that has to be proved meticulously . Why would seeing people get in a taxi make someone `furious`. There will be a good explanation that has nothing to do with frauding the system and who are we to judge ?
I would just be glad that I didn`t need to go to a food bank.

Lona, they were both very overweight, so maybe you are right. My husband is slim and fit, probably from struggling up the hill from the supermarket on a daily basis. His choice by the way.

I should think there can be many explanations- I learnt long ago that things are rarely what they seem,

Disgruntled Mon 06-Jun-16 16:10:17

They might have been in agony, or needed to get home in a hurry....

Stansgran Mon 06-Jun-16 16:16:48

It depends where you live but I use my free bus pass and then I hear how much people pay for a shortish bus journey and am gobsmacked. With two bags a shared taxi is probably a feasible option. My mil once said to me " we never take taxis .we've always had cars" when I hailed a taxi with her and three small children . She was a nightmare to get anywhere without wandering off. Walking in other people's moccasins and all that.

Or they don't have a car so use taxis. Many do.

annsixty Mon 06-Jun-16 17:05:24

We now use taxis a couple of times a week, I am hoping the situation will change when my knee is done but I don't know.
When I could get to the shops by bus I had to take a taxi back as I couldn't struggle with loaded bags.

My Mum used to be given taxi tokens for going shopping, when she still lived at home. Could be that.
But I think they stopped them soon after she died.
I must say it would niggle me too. We have food banks here, and the people who use them all have cars, usually good ones. But there's no public transport here.

peaceatlast...unwarrented comment about the two women being overweight they might have health issues!!! not everyone who is overweight eats to excess!

dramatictessa Mon 06-Jun-16 18:27:16

Your question is 'What can I say to my husband who is furious?'
Answer: be grateful you can a) afford to buy your own food b)get up the hill and stay fit c) make choices in your life

peaceatlast Mon 06-Jun-16 18:28:53

Well, Jenty61, just thinking of myself here probably. I eat to excess, I am overweight for sure, lol. I do appreciate what you are saying though.

peaceatlast Mon 06-Jun-16 18:30:46

dramatictessa, true what you are saying but, believe me, it was not always the case.

peaceatlast Mon 06-Jun-16 18:32:09

Thanks, everyone, for your suggestions and insights. I don't think it does any harm to wonder though so that's just what I was doing. Not judging.

Gracesgran Mon 06-Jun-16 18:47:40

Have to agree with dramatictessa about what to say to your husband.

You have been offered a few examples of why this might be happening. My mother used to have the tokens that could be used on a taxi - great as she could not get on and off a bus but they have stopped them - perhaps not in all areas though. Also the cheaper for two to pay one taxi fare than pay two bus fares - I can quite believe that. My contribution would be maybe they are volunteers at the food bank taking the necessities of life to some poor disabled person whose benefits this government has seen fit to cut - it happens.

Last thought, you could tell your husband not to be so judgemental when he doesn't know the actual circumstances then he wouldn't make himself so angry.

Liz46 Mon 06-Jun-16 18:56:37

I can understand why your husband was annoyed. I would have been too.

peaceatlast Mon 06-Jun-16 19:04:15

Gracesgran, he is not normally someone who passes comment about things like that, to be honest. But, just sometimes, you do have to ask the question when you are confused/amazed.

He actually gives money on a regular basis to worthy causes and I often have to get him to stop and think when responding to phone calls asking him to up his various regular contributions. He is a kind and generous man who would help anyone.

We go into town regularly where he always buys the Big Issue and donates to people I might not give to myself. I think maybe "furious" was too strong a word but he was certainly more than taken aback.

Iam64 Mon 06-Jun-16 19:16:13

It costs £4.50 to get the bus into town from my house, a three mile journey. A taxi is about £5 or £6.50. Nor more even two people a taxi is cheaper and more convenient. Being so judgemental about others, about whom we know nothing isn't usually either productive or compassionate

Gracesgran Mon 06-Jun-16 19:19:32

peaceatlast I am sure he is a kind man and any of us can leap to judgement but hopefully he will feel better when you tell him the possibilities as to why they were in a taxi. Taken aback while you think about it seems totally reasonable.

peaceatlast Mon 06-Jun-16 19:22:50

Thanks, Gracesgran.
Iam64, as I have tried to explain, he is not normally judgemental about others but just rather taken aback.
