My mother's ?definition of a gentleman: a man who uses a butter-knife when he's on his own. I suppose this is very dated now. Who uses a butter-knife these days? (What's a butter-knife Mum?)

My dear late mum always used to say you could tell a gentlemen by whether he had clean shiny shoes!

Once when leaving a local shop with DGS and DGD in pushchair, a gentleman held the door open so I told DGS that was a gentleman. The next time a lady held open the door to which my DGS piped up "is that lady a gentleman too?" Aah! Lol!
DH always walks on outside of me although that changes a little now as we're both hard of hearing and have to be on the correct side?

A dear colleague at work would carry my suitcase down the stairs for me whenever I left for the station. He is an absolute gentleman - kind and caring.

Met Michael Portillo and can tell you that he is as charming and polite in real life as he is on his TV appearances.I think it is due to being extremely happy with what he does for a living ( train programmes). Getting back to OP, my DF always judged a man on the state of his shoes and of his hands. Couldn't abide mucky hands, ragged nails. I don't think holding doors open is just a gentleman thing, I do it too, it is called good manners and should be practised by and accepted by both women and men without any snarky comments about sexism. Being a gentleman to me is about being well groomed, polite, and respectful of other people's opinions and beliefs, no sneering, no shouting ( so that's you out, Boris Johnson, you are an oaf, albeit a well spoken and expensively educated one). Class and/or money are not indicators of whether or not a man is a gentleman ( see comments re Boris).

I would like to heartily endorse gillt57's wise comments, but would just like to add what an elderly wag in my family told me years ago
