On another forum I've been visiting for ages (largely about house prices) there is always a certain amount of boomer loathing. But the other day one of the posters suggested, quite seriously, that the reason parents help out with The Bank of Mum and Dad, is that 'consciously or subconsciously' they think it will help to keep prices high, and in particular keep the value of their own house high.
Just how twisted do you have to be to think like this? We did help a dd and son in law last year to move up to a nicer house and area than they could otherwise afford, but they had refused any help with their first house a few years previously. We didn't begrudge the money at all, and I know we were fortunate to be able to do it, but IMO it would be so much better all round if prices were as relatively affordable as they were when we bought our family home in the 70s. As for thinking that parents only help out to maintain or increase the value of their own, words almost fail me.
I can only assume that such posters DO only know the kind of parents who are constantly banging on about how the value of their house has shot up God knows how many % during the last X years, and apparently don't understand, or don't want to, how difficult it is for younger people.
(Of course I'm talking London and much of the SE here, where prices are beyond ridiculous - I know it's not the same everywhere. )

(the grin is so you don't use this in evidence against me as of course I do not mean it but it does make me very angry). The vast, vast majority of people work very hard but some are never in a position to capitalise on their earnings, some suffer life events and some just do not have the luck to be in the right place at the right time. Do I begrudge those who work hard and are able to get the very most out of their hard work - no - but please do not belittle those who work hard and do not have the same good luck. It takes both to come out ahead of the crowd.
