Daft article, reminds me of Nancy Mitford's "u" and "non u" definitions, lavatory not toilet, napkin not serviette etc. For gawd's sake who wants white rings on their "non u, non inherited furniture, that's why we have coasters. Naff they might be, but kind of necessary. I do have a very old Victorian chest in the corner of my living room covered in marks and dare I say white rings, presumably that's OK. My husband would get rid of it in a heartbeat but I'm hanging on to it, because I like a mix of old and new. I'd like a Persian rug if I had old floorboards but alas we only have new oak wood, and possibly a very vulgar, floor in the hall, everywhere else we have the odious fitted carpets
Do agree about gargantuan flat screen tvs though.
