After seeing last nights programme about keeping young I realised how unfit I am. They were asking people to cross legs at the ankles and then sit down on the floor without using their hands to balance. Angela Rippon at 71 managed it beautifully but alas when I tried I could only get half way.
I have resolved to alter my diet and take more exercise, but where do you start? I would love to do a dance class but would look very silly I know as would not be able to keep up and I expect wouldn`t last for long before I had to sit down! This morning I tried dancing to the radio and lasted about 3 mins. If anyone has any words of wisdom for me I would be grateful or is there anyone who would like to join me on a quest to eat and live better from a standing start.

Next week it's about the brain and more scary stuff about our marbles and where we might have misplaced them hmm

Anya Fri 08-Apr-16 16:48:19

Sorry that should be to NonnaW

I've just started walking rescue greyhounds. I ached all over next day, but in a good way. Dog wrangling is far more of a 'whole body' workout than a gentle stroll :D

I am starting to put my affairs in order after watching that programme! I always thought I was reasonably fit but there is no way I am trying the sit down/get up thing in case I fall and break my hip! And as for the hidden fat, very scary. The fat you can see is bad enough. ?

pompa Fri 08-Apr-16 17:16:23

I'm not worrying about next weeks programme, after watching this weeks, I'm unlikely to make next week. hmm Like you Annegran, I'm putting my affairs in order - fast.

suzied I am very impressed!!
I am impressed by the fact that you filmed yourself doing the challenge and put it on YouTube!! Wow grin
(and doing the challenge, of course).

I shall practise by getting up and down from DS's sofa later on this evening (much lower than mine).

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 08-Apr-16 17:48:27

Don't try that getting down and up thing when you need a wee. hmm

granjura Fri 08-Apr-16 18:15:22

or when you've just had a knee replacement either ;)

Is it just me or ...

who finds Angela Rippon sooooo annoying. I do admire her figure, etc, but her manner really grates with me, and has always done.

Well done Susied! The last time I could do that I was in the Brownies. I go to a stretch and dance class,Zumba , aerobics and Aquafit ,all for over fifties. It's great fun especially the stretch and dance class. I must watch that programme next week.

NonnaW Fri 08-Apr-16 19:39:50

Thank you Anya, I shall look for it later.

I was just a little bit delighted when the scan showed all her visceral fat. shock

Rowantree Fri 08-Apr-16 23:14:24

So was I, jingl ! But it doesn't need a scan to see mine...does anyone know, by the way, how you know if you have a fatty liver? I'm worrying that I have one.....everything else about me is fatty, so my liver surely must be too? :-(

I chose not to watch it on the understanding that " the horse had already bolted"and I could never be as fit as Angela Rippon. I will just plod on as normal.

trisher Sat 09-Apr-16 09:02:25

Don't think I could have done this at 50 so no hope at 70!! My mother (94) told me about this programme. In her words Angela Rippon ,without her make up, "Looked older than I do!!" I will have to watch it.

Anya Sat 09-Apr-16 09:06:37

Rowantree you can't see visceral fat - even if you are thin you can have abnormal amounts around your organs. It's known as TOFI - Thin Outside Fat Inside and it's the reason people who seem slim develop heart disease or type 2 diabetes which us normally associated with being overweight.

You need to keep visceral fat down to less than 12.5%

I tried the cross leg thingie and did myself a damage. I've been on pain killers ever since! However, I do dance, and have for the last ten years. I do Latin American and ballroom, and love it. It's very social and I go to tea dances and have made lots of dancing friends. I certainly recommend that.

Omaoma57 Sat 09-Apr-16 09:15:45

I go to aquafit at least twice a week....great fun, safe for pesky knees or hips...all sizes, ages and fitness levels....or just go for a walk....swing those arms and breathe deeply..makes me feel great...hope you find something that works for you. Xxx

My mother at 71 could in no way at all have performed the sitting down and getting up thingy on TV and now at 70 this year, neither could I.

Mum lived to be 90.

goose1964 Sat 09-Apr-16 09:27:16

I managed a descent to my sofa - not trying the floor as I have arthritis & I know I couldn't bend that far, made me realise just how much weaker my left had side is despite doing the physio exercises.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 09-Apr-16 09:31:50

Yes. I too thought Angela Ripon looked very old without her makeup! Shows how skilled the celebs are at applying their expensive slap.

To keep fit try reducing your sugar intake. When buying processed food check the label about the amount of sugar in the product.

Sugar makes up put on weight. Sugar is 50% glucose and 50% fructose. Glucose is essential to feed our cells, more than a little fructose makes us eat more and stops us knowing when we have had enough to eat.

Eat lodes of vegetables of all sorts and a couple of pieces of fruit a day.

For more information read David Gallespie's books Sweet Poison and The Sweet Poison Quit Plan. You can read the introductions to these books on Amazon. Robert Lustig, an endocrinologist, talks on youtube. Well worth spending time listening to him.

Lyneve. Well said.smile
A couple of things.
Sugar:-
We should get enough natural sugars from a well balanced diet without any additional processed sugar.
Food labels:-
Reduced sugar items often have higher fat content to maintain the flavour. Also "Reduced Sugar" "Reduced Fat" Reduced Salt" are dubious statements, it gives no idea how much it is reduced, may be so little that it is not worth the extra cost that these items often demand. Read the labels
