After seeing last nights programme about keeping young I realised how unfit I am. They were asking people to cross legs at the ankles and then sit down on the floor without using their hands to balance. Angela Rippon at 71 managed it beautifully but alas when I tried I could only get half way.
I have resolved to alter my diet and take more exercise, but where do you start? I would love to do a dance class but would look very silly I know as would not be able to keep up and I expect wouldn`t last for long before I had to sit down! This morning I tried dancing to the radio and lasted about 3 mins. If anyone has any words of wisdom for me I would be grateful or is there anyone who would like to join me on a quest to eat and live better from a standing start.

Is this someone's idea of a joke (You've been Framed?)

I crossed my legs, tried to lower myself onto a low pouffe, went down too rapidly, slid off the back of it onto the floor, luckily the sofa was there otherwise I would have gone right back! Then I noticed DH staring in astonishment through the window.
He says that gardening is better exercise.

Can you link to a YouTube vid please?

Jalima Fri 08-Apr-16 14:40:07

Who - me? shock
You must be joking .....

I've done a couple of aquafit class at my local swimming pool. It's quite strenuous - at the end of the hour you really feel as if you've had a good workout, and a bit of a laugh as well (if you've got any breath left!). Much more fun than trolling up and down the pool. As for controlled sitting - we have just come back from a four hour walk and it is all I can do to get my legs off the sofa at the mo!

No J. grin suziej.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 08-Apr-16 15:01:12

Sorry! d not j.

suzied Fri 08-Apr-16 15:18:01

I've made a very bad video of myself doing this but I can't seem to attach it here. Will try to put on utube. Haven't done that before and could take some time!

Haha hope you all have a laugh at this

Anya Fri 08-Apr-16 15:42:56

I'll wait till DH goes out before I try that suzied ?

Maggiemaybe Fri 08-Apr-16 15:45:14

Well, I've just made a very ungraceful descent to the floor, having read this thread earlier, but forgot trainers, weights and cushion. Flailed about like a dying swan for a couple of minutes then hauled myself up, using the hands of course. I've recorded the programme, perhaps I should watch it - and the YouTube video, of course.

We're all waiting, suzied grin

I'm sure I could have done this 10 years ago, before hip and knee replacements (that's my story and I'm sticking to it.)

Pittcity Fri 08-Apr-16 15:50:24

Loved the cat suzied

Maggiemaybe Fri 08-Apr-16 15:52:19

Wayhay, it's there! I'll be giving that a go later (psyching myself up first). I like your cat, suzied - my bad-tempered old moggie will be doing her best to trip me up if she's around.

NannaBanana Fri 08-Apr-16 15:56:53

Thanks Suzied! If it's any comfort to others like me, lots of young posters on mumsnet can't seem to do it either!

Anya Fri 08-Apr-16 16:03:27

No problem getting down gracefully. Tried getting up and at the last attempt I thought I just might do it.....but no grin

Will try again tomorrow. Do you think it would help if I borrowed next door's cat?

Anya Fri 08-Apr-16 16:04:10

PS great skin suzied

NonnaW Fri 08-Apr-16 16:04:51

Could I ask please, what was the name of the programme and what channel? Might be able to watch it on catch-up.

fillygumbo Fri 08-Apr-16 16:06:51

thank you all, reminded me of the time I went with dd to aqua aerobics we were doubled up laughing at my lack of coordination, I seemed to be doing the exact opposite to everyone else, alas she refuses to go with me again.
I am going to try the zumba gold, I shall hide at the back of the room.

BarbaraAbbs Fri 08-Apr-16 16:06:59

Is there someone who made this programme that you can ask for an alternative test? Having had two hip replacements and a knee, and then two hip dislocations, I am obviously for the knackers yard as dare not even start this manoeuvre but still seem to be here.

Brummiegran Fri 08-Apr-16 16:09:02

Thank you Suzied! I'll tryflowers

Maggiemaybe Fri 08-Apr-16 16:09:17

The Mumsnet thread's hilarious. One of their OH's broke the dining room table and another's wrenched a radiator off the wall. I don't think I'll mention this to my DH.

TriciaF Fri 08-Apr-16 16:17:34

Well done Suzie - I think your cat was worried about you wink.
I wouldn't even try it - I have to hang onto something when lowering myself to the floor, and even more when getting up.

jinglbellsfrocks Fri 08-Apr-16 16:33:32

Thank you suzie. That's great! (Love your pussy cat) smile

I just tried it again. Got down ok but again wobbled on the landing. No way could I ever get up again. I have been digging the garden though. So a bit knackered. Don't think I'm built for it though TBH.

Penstemmon Fri 08-Apr-16 16:35:27

I would have lost 2 points I think! I can get down but only get up by using a knee and bit of a wobble!! I am working on it.

Just had a bit of a jig to Bellowhead music!

Anya Fri 08-Apr-16 16:43:37

Nonnie ir was called How to Stay Young and was on BBC1 last night at 9.00pm I think.
