Pennies

I try not to collect 1p, 2p 5 and 10ps because of the difficulty getting rid of them. My local newsagent is happy to take these coins but obviously not too many.

There are coin exchange machines at many supermarkets, mollie. You feed the coins in and have the option of donating the tally to charity, or have vouchers to spend in the shop ...

Me too I have a glass pot I sling them in...but I give them to my daughter and she puts them in one of those coin counting machines in
Sainsbury you get vouchers to use in store..

I don't usually shop in Sainsburys but was in one recently and saw one of those machines. I couldn't figure out what it was for!

Yes kitty, it's not free - not sure what percentage they take.

Thanks tanith there is a large Sainsburys 2 miles from where I live. I have not got a clue how to work the machine but no doubt somebody will help me.

If I have enough cash, then I use all my money in situ. I'm probably one of those shoppers that get tutted at in the queue. #noshrapnel.

Marie Kondo, in her book on tidying, says that it's really common for people to have coins here and there in their homes.
I was most surprised as I have never saved coins, except when I was a child and had a squirrel bank.

My beloved takes all the shrapnel to the bank and gets its value in return in larger dominations.

I did once use one of those machines, it was long and tedious, there was a tutter next to me who I ignored, and I was disappointed to discover I had to spend the voucher at the supermarket (stupid me). Not sure I fancy counting it all out into little bags for the bank - don't they get a bit iffy about taking too many? I might find a machine that takes the donations for charity, I like that idea. it would be worth lugging all those coins about...

Gosh what a dilemma. I spend mine as I go along.

The banks don't take very much at a time even if it is bagged and only if you are a customer. I wonder if you could perhaps bag it up and go and open a savings account with it. Might be worth a try, it is money after all.

We also just spend ours as we go along although I don't seem to have money any more when I think about it.

I'll have to check my stash out - on closer inspection there are thr'penny bits and sixpences in amongst my fil's hoard, perhaps even older pennies and the like. Won't be any value but a slice of history for the GD...

I took mine to Azda, had to spend voucher that day, but DDIL said she had gone to customer services and got the cash ?

We found a large jar full in DD's bedroom; DH counted them and paid them into her bank account and they were quite happy to take them. It looked a huge amount but was only about a tenner .
Much of it was redundant European coins.

My DH has a large stash of old pennies. I suppose these are absolutely useless now. None of them are rare or collectables. I don't know why he kept them in the first place.

Some charities can make use of £sd coins and foreign coins.

H collects shrapnel in a box, he doesn't search it out, just empties his pockets at the end of the day. Anything up to 10p goes in the box. He then bags it and changes it at our bank. I think they will only do it if your a customer.

ps just to clarify: the bank didn't take the redundant European coins, only the English coinage. The European shrapnel has gone back in the jar .....

Do a self service shop at the supermarket and pay with coins.

I took £15 worth of copper and 5ps to our bank last week. It was left over from a float months ago so was bagged up in the correct amounts. As it was market day I planned to spend the dosh on plants.

The bank told me I could pay it into my account but they couldn't change it for notes. I did this and then the woman said, 'Is there anything else I can help you with?'
