I have allowed dgs to watch more tv than he's normally permitted. It's been a great help in letting me tidy, prepare his food etc, then we sit down and play until lunchtime. He's quite grizzly and argumentative as well (not his usual) so I'm heading off confrontation with him. There are times and there are times, and I don't think now is the right time to be firm with an unwell, grumpy, missing his mum, tired 2 year old. I'm also not in my 20s/30s any more! I'm justifying it to myself I know, but I do feel guilty.

nature/nurture debate was ringing around my ears about 45 years ago - have they not decided yet?

And as for 'stimulating' a 6 month old in front of the telly - words fail me.

MiniMouse Mon 14-Mar-16 22:30:26

Ana same here! I thought it was a typo blush

petra Mon 14-Mar-16 22:21:04

It was all going so well until the word resile. You were almost sounding human, then the teacher had to come out.
I will say here and now: teachers are in my Room 101.

Ana Mon 14-Mar-16 17:03:34

Well, I've learned a new word today - resile. I'd never come across it before!

Gill2008 Mon 14-Mar-16 16:59:08

My DD's Health Visitor has told her to put tv on for her 6 month old son to "stimulate" him. He is already as bright as a button and she talks plays and reads to him and as I told DD Galileo, Da Vinci and Shakespeare seemed to manage without tv. Health visitor not very pleased with my input thoughgrin

Well a kerfuffle I seem to have raised. Very sorry about that. The poster who pointed put that teachers have to be 'loud and clear' to get heard in class might be on to something and I appear to have been more forthright than I meant to be. Nor did I want to criticise or berate the original poster, Katek, about letting a poorly child just 'be' as it's what I would have done myself.

Incidentally, I lived too far from my own mother for her to help much with my two children but on rare occasions she had them overnight. I have no idea what TV the children watched, probably, 'Eastenders' and 'Emmerdale' because what they really wanted to tell me about was the amazing breakfasts Grandma gave them. One had beans, sausage and stilton and the other had beans with mini Aeros stuck in the bowl to resemble a hedgehog.

I don't, however, resile my position about language skill acquisition. Of course, the nature/nurture debate still raging, it might all be down to the genes anyway. Who knows? The latest research is coming down decidedly in favour of genetic advantages though it would hardly be fashionable to say so and would raise a cry of rage far louder than any on Gransnet.

So apologies for the ruffled feathers, ladies.

More offended by the pervious post grin rofl

Jalima Wed 09-Mar-16 14:47:29

petra I am truly shocked

petra Wed 09-Mar-16 14:45:56

Naughty nana here. I did use the word Tosh in a pervious post. I hope I didn't offend anyone.

Anya Wed 09-Mar-16 13:22:29

mary 'strong' language, by which I'm guessing you mean quite forthright, is not the same as 'hurtful'.

rubylady Wed 09-Mar-16 13:11:10

Make the poor lad comfy on the settee/chair, with a cuddle blanket and teddy, put the tele on something for children and go and make a cup of tea while making him something scrummy and his favourite so that he will eat something. And don't even think of feeling guilty, his granny is showing how much she loves him, what could be better than that? You are brilliant, wonderful and the best. smile

lynnie1 Wed 09-Mar-16 00:03:56

My daughter and I have never really discussed rules, as such. I agree with chrissyh. If we fancy having the telly on, we do

maryEJB Tue 08-Mar-16 23:11:20

Well i dont agree with teacher 11s views (i am a retired teacher) but i do agree that there is a tendency on gransnet sometimes to 'gang up' or appear to which can appear very unkind. Disagreeing with views is one thing but sometimes strong and hurtful language is used unnecessarily.

chrissyh Tue 08-Mar-16 18:02:35

I always said to my mum when she looked after my children, you do what you feel is right and if you allow them to do something that I don't, they know they won't be able to do it with me. As a nanny myself, I feel keeping them happy is the most important thing to me and, luckily, my ddil feels the same.

jinglbellsfrocks Tue 08-Mar-16 13:34:54

My younger DD learned all about where babies come from from watching Schools programmes aimed at junior school children, when she was three. Did a good job they did. She used to come and tell me all about it.

Alea Tue 08-Mar-16 13:30:10

Of course anya but that is presumably precisely because they disagree with the opinions, not because they are "teacher bashing"!!

Anya Tue 08-Mar-16 13:27:51

Just to point out there are many teachers on GN who actually disagree with teachers point of view.

annsixty Tue 08-Mar-16 13:08:27

Thumbs up for the last two posts from me.

felice Tue 08-Mar-16 12:53:39

Oh ALEA that rings so many bells here, many people who work in the main Institutions see themselve totally by their chosen career.
How many times have I been asked on a first meeting,'what do you do' or 'what does your Husband do', even which department are you in, what grade etc.
When they are asked about themselves you get their CV.

I know people here who when you ask them where they have visited, what there social life is, have no anwser and go back to talking about work, the Stagieres in the Parliament are the worse especially the ones affiliated to Political parties.
Ok rant over.

Alea Tue 08-Mar-16 12:34:57

There is an element on GN that do seem to enjoy having a go at a teacher

Let's not start that!! A person can sometimes see offence where none is intended. It is possible to disagree with a post without having a go at a whole group. For all I know Teacher11 could be a brain surgeon, nail technician or market gardener.

There are some people in RL who like to stress "what" they are (or what their "other half" is "oh hubby's a doctor/judge/banker dontcha know" rather than WHO they are.
One of the points of a "username" is anonymity but also individuality as we speak as ourselves, not representatives of a profession.

Tegan Tue 08-Mar-16 10:12:49

Can anyone explain why my one year old grandchild isn't allowed to watch any tv? I find it very extreme. [daren't ask the parents...]

Luckygirl Tue 08-Mar-16 10:04:19

I do not agree about the teacher bashing. I am a school governor and chair of the staffing committee - I admire them immensely and do all I can to support them in their difficult job. None of the teachers I work with share the views that teacher has expressed. They are all desperate to break away from the strangle hold of tests and government edicts, and to give the children a balanced, rounded education.

Jalima Tue 08-Mar-16 09:59:24

Well, that remark in itself is enough to make hackles rise - there is an element indeed!
In fact, well done, Imperfect - QED

The point of the OP was to seek reassurance that the original poster wasn't being a bad or neglectful granny in allowing a fractious 2 year old to watch tv for once, not to receive a lecture on where she was going wrong and what she should be doing.
In fact, Teacher missed the whole point of the OP.

Many of us may not be or may not have been teachers but I, for one, have teachers in the family and everyone has their own experience of teachers - not just on GN!

Neither have a couple of sharp responses (I hope mine were not sharp) deterred teacher from trying to justify herself in telling katek where she has gone wrong and how she should have been amusing a sick grandchild.

Lillie Tue 08-Mar-16 09:19:04

He he!! The trouble with teachers is that they have to be strong-willed and forceful in order to look after their challenging charges! I guess this often spills out into their daily lives so they are sometimes given a Miss Trunchbull-like label.
In my school I allow every teacher to use their own methods and to do things their way while conforming to a common ethos. A bit like on GN, - have your own opinions, express them, but keep things polite and friendly. Exactly, petra, no bashing either way!

petra Tue 08-Mar-16 08:31:55

I don't see some of the opinions as teacher bashing, I see it as challenging someone's views. Nothing wrong in that.
Maybe it could make people re think their views. I don't necessarily mean this subject.
